Early College High Schools (ECHS) are an educational intervention designed to promote rigor in high school education along with increased post-secondary access and success for disadvantaged students. Based on evidence, the Early College High School program is effective at helping students who traditionally are not in college-bound tracks find their way into that path. ECHSs provide a comprehensive, rigorous high school experience allowing students to earn an associate’s degree along with the high school diploma. Regarding structure, the ECHS is an entire high school, with all students earning college credits. Examining post-secondary experiences of students participating in Early College High …

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether differences in student course outcomes as defined by final course grades existed between three content delivery methods in career and technical education courses: Traditional (face to face), hybrid, and online. Final course grades in career and technical education courses at one community college for the Fall 2011 through the Fall 2015 semesters were used in this study to compare the success of students in courses employing the three content delivery methods. Civil Liability And The Response Of Police Officers: The Effect Of Lawsuits On Police Discretionary Actions, Anthony P. Chiarlitti

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between police discretion in carrying out arrests and the fear of retaliation litigation. Quantitative methods were used to examine the concerns of 88 police officers and first-line supervisors regarding civil litigation and the impact these concerns have on the discharge of their duties. The results indicate that the police officers in the study were not significantly concerned with the deterrent effects of lawsuits on their arrest activity, but there was a difference between the opinions of the police officers and their superiors regarding civil liability. A significant …

Examining Student Leader Involvement Patterns Related To Academic Success, Stephanie Reiley

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the desirable limits of Astin’s Involvement Theory. Astin (1993) reports that involvement on campus is positively related to student success, however, in other portions of his work, he reports that there are certain limitations on the theory of involvement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the involvement patterns and academic impact of highly involved students at Rowan University, in Glassboro, New Jersey in the spring 2015 semester. The target population for this survey was current Resident Assistants, Orientation Staff, and members of the Student Government Association. The instrument to assess students’ patterns and levels of …

Affirmative Action In Higher Ed Sustained With Caveats., Aldemaro Romero Jr. Jul 2016

Affirmative Action In Higher Ed Sustained With Caveats., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

The term affirmative action was first used in an executive order by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. The motivation was to favor members of a disadvantaged group that historically suffered from discrimination due to oppression of any kind. This concept has been employed in many spheres and one of those has been to promote diversity in higher education on the basis that many universities have effectively discriminated against admitting and/or promoting minorities. Two weeks ago the U.S. Supreme Court announced a decision on affirmative action that originated in higher education. The 4-to-3 decision reaffirmed the University of Texas’s admission …

Assessing Self-Authorship Among Athletic Training Students, Jeffrey G. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the nature and development of self-authorship among athletic training students. A cross-sectional, survey design was used and students enrolled in Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited professional athletic training degree programs were included as participants. Systematic sampling was used to recruit participants from the target population. Town And Gown Relations: Finding Equitable Prosperity For Neighborhood Resident Stakeholders, Ian T. Foley Jun 2016

Town And Gown Relations: Finding Equitable Prosperity For Neighborhood Resident Stakeholders, Ian T. Foley

Theses and Dissertations

An effective and prosperous community is measured by the sum of its parts, and in the case of a college town, everyone from the college students, to the neighborhood residents are stakeholders in what represents a college town. The neighborhood resident is a less researched stakeholder, but none the less important in understanding challenges. This study expands the limited knowledge base on attitudes of neighborhood resident stakeholders in college towns. A randomized door-to-door survey was conducted in the Glassboro, New Jersey neighborhood surrounding Rowan University, collecting the attitudes of permanent residents regarding interactions with students, property and public safety concerns, …

Lecciones De IngléS Para Un Hispanohablante Encarcelado: Caso PráCtico, Mckenzie Brown

World Languages and Cultures

This project attempts to outline my experience teaching English in the San Luis Obispo County Jail as part of a seven-week internship. It will outline various teaching methods that I found useful in one-on-one settings. I will discuss the flexibility required to work within the limitations imposed by the jail, as well as linguistic and cultural obstacles associated with teaching a native Spanish speaker. Lastly, I intend to advocate for the implementation of more jail programs that can be accessed by non-native English speakers.

Although this project's core is founded in seven weeks of ninety-minute instructional sessions, it will also …

A Metaevaluation Of The Commission On Fire Accreditation International Accreditation Process, Stacy A. French Jun 2016

A Metaevaluation Of The Commission On Fire Accreditation International Accreditation Process, Stacy A. French

Dissertations

Fire and emergency services throughout the country are being required by local governmental authorities to provide efficient and effective services. In 1996, the International City-County Management Association (ICMA) and the International Association of Fire Chief (IAFC) executed a master trust agreement that established the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) to award accreditation to those fire and emergency services that demonstrated efficiency and effectiveness in the services provided. As of this study, no documented research had been published that challenged the current CFAI Accreditation process to ensure the highest level of accountability and usefulness for both the public and fire …

Decision Support/CQI

At the Strategic Planning Forum we distributed a year-end review handout that included a model and explanation of Continuous Quality Improvement. The model and explanation are now available online.

Continuous Quality Improvement describes what we've been doing at UNO for quite some time, using data to uncover ways to improve our programs, services, and processes.

We know data-driven decision making is happening all of the time at UNO, but it has not always been easy to document. And, as most of you know, accrediting bodies emphasize capacity to demonstrate regular use of data in decision making and program improvement.
