Building Moral Character Through “Catholic Athletes For Christ’S Program” At The Diocese Of Trenton, New Jersey, Neiser Cardenas
Building Moral Character Through “Catholic Athletes For Christ’S Program” At The Diocese Of Trenton, New Jersey, Neiser Cardenas
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The tendency to care more for the business than the human being has increased the problem of unethical conduct in sports. Catholic schools, along with their limited resources, have worked over the last few decades to be better organized, more competitive academically, and more focused on social and moral responsibility. Unsportsmanlike behaviors go against the teachings and values of the Roman Catholic Church, so Catholic schools have the mission to minimize the problem.
This qualitative study explored whether combining sports activity and teaching Christian virtues could help student-athletes reduce unsportsmanlike behaviors. This study aimed to identify the success factors that …

Psychological Research on Urban Society
Understanding and improving teacher well-being are essential prerequisites for effective teaching. However, studies on teacher well-being in Indonesia are few. This mixed-method study was conducted to identify the factors that influence the well-being of teachers in primary schools in Indonesia. Data were collected through self-rating and open-ended questions from 209 primary school teachers followed by semi-structured interviews with eight teachers. The results of the self- rating survey illustrated that the teachers were very satisfied with their lives as a teacher. Well-being was considered important in their work, because it can exert a positive impact on students. The results of the …
Returning, Exploring, And Developing: A Threefold Cultural Program For Third Culture Kids, Early Adolescents, And School Staff, Natalie Dignoti
Returning, Exploring, And Developing: A Threefold Cultural Program For Third Culture Kids, Early Adolescents, And School Staff, Natalie Dignoti
Master of Arts in Cross-Cultural & International Education Plan II Graduate Projects
This program takes a threefold approach to addressing the unique needs of third culture kids, early adolescents, and school staff through repatriation support, cultural awareness and exchange, and professional development. An introduction describes the specific characteristics of both third culture kids and early adolescents and defines the purpose of each component of the program. A thorough literature review provides background information and justification for the gaps that the program seeks to fill. For each of the three components, theoretical frameworks illuminate the issues addressed by the program, as well as guiding principles for navigating the target population’s needs. Following each …
The Need For Standardized Training For Volunteer Healthcare Chaplains, Dominic Anthony Korzecki
The Need For Standardized Training For Volunteer Healthcare Chaplains, Dominic Anthony Korzecki
Masters Theses
For the past 50 years, many studies have examined the effects of Spiritual Care in medical environments. Though these studies have helped support the legitimacy and necessity for the presence of spiritual care in medicine, a lack of attention has been given to the level of professionalism of those who have been granted permission to administer care. The objective of my thesis is to determine the following: 1) if medical organizations that utilize volunteer-only spiritual care programs for their patients, and families, provide the same level of care as ones staffed by trained professionals, 2) if volunteer-only chaplaincy programs generate …

Catalysts For Change: The Sacralizing Impulse Of The Second Great Awakening And Its Transformative Impact On American Higher Education, Blake S. Hart
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation delves into the profound impact of the Second Great Awakening on American higher education and its enduring social consequences. Examining the period from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, the research uncovers the core belief that drove the Awakening—that America and its citizens were chosen for a divine purpose, endeavoring to manifest the kingdom of heaven on Earth. It explores how Protestant-led revivalism and social reform movements fueled by this core belief influenced the establishment and evolution of American higher education. Through in-depth case studies of Andover Theological Seminary, Lane Seminary, and Oberlin College, the research …

Exploring A Potential Preparedness Gap Between Undergraduate Ministry Programs And Real-Life Ministry In The Southern Baptist Convention, Barton D. Morrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract The aim of this multicase study dissertation research was to examine the experiences, perceptions, and feelings of pastors in the Southern Baptist Convention who completed their undergraduate degrees from a Southern Baptist Convention higher education institution. Participants of the study had 3–10 years of full-time church ministry experience in local Southern Baptist Convention affiliated churches and had not yet attended graduate school or seminary. These qualifiers were placed on the selection process to allow the discovery of a possible gap between the pastor’s higher education experience and the practical ministry training required for their first local church ministry. Two …

Discerning Impact Of Secular Humanism On Pastoral Counseling, Stephen Ganschow
Discerning Impact Of Secular Humanism On Pastoral Counseling, Stephen Ganschow
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Pastoral care has existed in some form for generations, dating most precisely back to the New Testament writings of Paul, the Apostle. Religious people-helping approaches thus endured in some form until a dramatic shift occurred in the late 1700s, with the onset of the Enlightenment. This historic phenomenon resulted in an aggressive cultural adjustment to understand the self and its distresses apart from religious orientation, instead favoring a humanistic orientation. Yet, pastoral counseling has endured and adapted in an effort to remain a viable means of serving people in distress. In modernity, pastoral care and counseling now exists within a …
Ecotheology In Context: A Critical Phenomenological Study Of Graduates Of Environmentally Focused Seminary Programs In The United States Of America, Cherice Bock
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
In recent decades, the field of ecotheology has emerged in dialogue with the context of the interconnected environmental and climate crises, particularly relating to the critique of Christianity being used to justify human and resource exploitation. A range of disciplines within the religious academy have taken up these intersecting concerns, together termed “ecologically informed theological education.” Graduate institutions training faith leaders and theological educators have created degree programs and certifications, and/or incorporated awareness of ecology, sustainability, and care for creation into their curricula. A research approach for ecotheology is described through the conceptual framework of critical ecotheology, which acknowledges ecotheology …

College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Executive Summary Faith and spirituality are becoming increasingly sought-after anchors in mounting challenges in the contemporary world. The need for effective leadership, spiritual guidance, and mentorship have become more pivotal. Evidence also suggests that spiritual leadership values and practices are related to leadership effectiveness and encompass the behaviors needed to motivate oneself, satisfy spiritual well-being, and positively influence others within that organization. However, more research has yet to explore how spirituality affects leadership behavior and action in faith-based programs such as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This study explored the lived experiences of RCIA leaders and participants …

Translanguaging As An Elementary Language Immersion Writing Approach, Lauren Hughes
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Studies have indicated that implementing translanguaging practices in language immersion programs impacts student writing. However, the overall body of research remains sparse. Because of the limited body of research, opposing ideologies around translanguaging practices create barriers to implementing such practices in school programs. This study explores and evaluates various translanguaging practices and their impact on student development, including multilingual identity and academic achievement, through a comprehensive literature review of existing research. The language immersion settings for the studies included in this research range from elementary schools to universities focusing on elementary immersion programs. Upon completing the literature review, the researcher …

Cura Communitatis In The Time Of Coronavirus, Jeffrey Labelle
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
This study conceptualizes cura communitatis as a contemporary bridge between cura personalis and cura apostolica for Jesuit higher educational institutions. A review of related literature suggests this concept as a possible means for Jesuit IHEs to respond to the realities of the coronavirus pandemic and the psychological, social, spiritual, and economic challenges which have resulted from dealing with this global health crisis. The author surfaces the shared desire in AJCU institutions to care for one another and our shared relationships as pilgrims during a global phenomenon that has demanded physical distancing. The study explores the ways in which this desire …

Anchored In Faith, Soaked In Blood: Black Social Activists Strategies For Developing Equitable Policy In Education, Civil Rights, And Citizenship, Sharletta Michelle Green
Theses and Dissertations
Religious beliefs and the use of race to create a narrative of inferiority plague education, civil rights, and citizenship policy development and implementation, causing harm to Black citizens. Public education is the bedrock of a democratic society. Civil rights and the ability to exercise those rights within a country are vital elements of citizenship. A well-educated populace provides a country's position and power. Equitable education, civil rights, and the vestiges of full citizenship in the U.S. for Black people have been a constant battle. This fight has been at the forefront of the demands for this nation since Reconstruction. Black …

The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community
This narrative case study provides an in-depth look into the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic from the perspective of an assistant pastor with a small African American church in an urban city. His story indicates that the pandemic had both positive and negative effects on the pastor’s ability to carry out his role of pastoral care and ministry. Some positives were the results of new technological adaptations that helped to improve members’ consistency in attending and participating in weekly services. Some negative effects imposed by COVID-19 was the revelation of imbalanced relationships and a lack of trust in God. The …

The COVID-19 pandemic brought global disruptions to the way universities operate. Online learning abruptly took priority, as the physical campuses in Australian universities became deserted. Staff had to instantly adapt to major changes in work practices, whilst continuing to support students’ engagement and maintain quality teaching and learning. This article discusses how change fatigue during the pandemic impacted the wellbeing of staff working in the enabling education sector. As staff and student wellbeing is interdependent, gaining a better understanding of the influences on staff wellbeing in the post-pandemic era is worth exploring in the context of discussions around student wellbeing …
How Do Librarians Preach, Worship And Pray?: Insights From The Reformers, Garrett Trott
How Do Librarians Preach, Worship And Pray?: Insights From The Reformers, Garrett Trott
The Christian Librarian
Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli have become common names in many Protestant churches because they were key figures in the Reformation. Many components of life were impacted by their initiatives to bring about change in the Catholic church. Many of us understand the distinct doctrinal components of that transformation, but did that doctrine impact other facets of life? This brief essay will look at how the Reformation changed preaching, prayer, and worship and how those changes impacted (and can further impact) the practice of librarians.
