An Examination Of Middle School Organizational Structures In The United States And Australia, Cheryl Ellerbrock, Katherine Main, Kristina N. Falbe, Dana Pomykal Franz
Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications
The middle school concept, aimed at creating a more developmentally responsive learning environment for young adolescents, gained a stronghold in the later part of the 20th century. Proponents of this concept have argued continually for the holistic implementation of its six key characteristics if its benefits are to be realized. These characteristics include: (a) a challenging, integrative, and exploratory curriculum; (b) varied teaching and learning approaches; (c) assessment and evaluation that promote learning; (d) flexible organizational structures (i.e., including the physical space, scheduling, and grouping of students and teachers); (e) programs and policies that foster health, wellness and safety; and …
Empathy As A Christian Calling, Danielle Bryant
Empathy As A Christian Calling, Danielle Bryant
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This essay focuses on the recent study of care in my teaching, and the role empathy plays in enacting an ethic of care. Using current research in empathy, along with reflections on my own teaching practice, the ACTS model offers some practical ways to foster and model empathy in teaching. Several case studies exemplify this approach within a variety of educational settings. Current brain research is also explored in the discussion of the model in this essay.

Impact Of Multiplex Relationships On Rural Science Education.Pdf, Peter Knutson, Dawn Del Carlo
The Rural Educator
Relationships play a strong role in rural communities and education, and multiplex relationships – relationships that can overlap due to multiple contexts of interaction in a rural school – are unique to the rural setting. This study focused on multiplex relationships and their impact on science classroom performance, as measured by science standardized test scores, through the lens of Social Capital Theory. Quantitative survey results from rural science teachers regarding number of student relationships and state-based science test scores were correlated. Additionally, qualitative survey answers from a subset of respondents were used to construct a more complete picture of the …

Kematangan Emosi Remaja Pelaku Bullying, Siti Maryam, Fatmawati Fatmawati
Jurnal Kajian Bimbingan dan Konseling
In recent year, there is a number of news in the mass media on violence in the school, including bullying. The high number of juvenile delinquency is the result of a lack of ability to control emotions in an acceptable way, causing the individual to easily engage the group's influence to perform negative behavior, including bullying behavior. From the above explanation, we interested to examine more deeply how the emotional maturity in adolescents bully in Junior High School 9 Banda Aceh. This study was done through quantitave method by using using the Emotional Maturity scale developed by Katkovsky and Gorlow. …

The Characteristics Of Catholic Schools: Comparative Perspectives From The Usa And Queensland, Australia, Jim Gleeson, John O'Gorman, Peta Goldburg, Maureen M. O'Neill
Journal of Catholic Education
The faith-based identity of Catholic schools is increasingly problematic in a secularised society where the numbers of teachers belonging to religious orders are diminishing rapidly. Teachers’ views regarding the characteristics of Catholic schools are an important aspect of the identity of such schools. The authors locate Catholic schools in the USA and Queensland, Australia, in their respective contexts and compare teachers’ ratings of the importance of eleven given characteristics of Catholic schools as seen by 3,389 teachers in USA Catholic schools and 2,287 teachers in Queensland Catholic schools. When the mean ratings for each jurisdiction were statistically correlated, USA teachers …
Financial Crisis In Catholic Education: An Evaluation Study Of Three Alternative Funding Models., Crystal Taylor
Financial Crisis In Catholic Education: An Evaluation Study Of Three Alternative Funding Models., Crystal Taylor
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to examine three different funding models for Catholic Education, and explore how the models meet the goals of Catholic Identity and education. In addition, the study looked to find the feasibility of these particular alternative funding methods to meet any deficiencies seen in school enrollment of at-risk students. The decline in Catholic school education opportunities, specifically within urban areas, is due in part to an exodus of parishioners relocating from urban to suburban areas. This trend affected the traditional Catholic educational funding model as Catholic schools primarily derive support from local parishes within those …
Catholic Identity In Edmund Rice Christian Brother Schools In The United States, Thomas R. Leto
Catholic Identity In Edmund Rice Christian Brother Schools In The United States, Thomas R. Leto
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Over the past 25 years, if not longer, the number of vowed religious priests, brothers, and sisters actively teaching and administering in Catholic elementary and secondary schools has decreased dramatically. One might say that they are a vanishing breed, and the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers are no exception. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how the Church’s Catholic identity is strengthened, communicated, and remains vibrant in schools and ministries currently under the care and sponsorship of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers. It is important to assess the Catholic identity of the schools under the Brothers’ care while determining …

Experience, Perception, And Purpose For The Chapel Program At Taylor University, Wynn Coggin
Experience, Perception, And Purpose For The Chapel Program At Taylor University, Wynn Coggin
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Research concerning student experience and perception of chapel programs at Christian colleges is severely lacking (Morrison, 2014). However, relevant literature on secularization and the rising impact of spirituality on today’s students reveals chapel programs to be a critical intersection for the spiritual life of a Christian institution and its students. This study sought to explore and describe student perceptions and experience of the chapel program at Taylor University for the 2016-2017 academic year. The study implemented an embedded mixed methods design consisting of two surveys administered to the entire campus community; one survey administered at regular intervals to a group …
Responding To Interactive Troubles – Implications For School Culture, Gro E. Lund, John M. Winslade
Responding To Interactive Troubles – Implications For School Culture, Gro E. Lund, John M. Winslade
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
Responding to interactive troubles in schools can create processes of exclusion and marginalization. Certain basic assumptions can become knitted into school culture in ways that give rise to specific exclusionary practices. However, it does not have to be this way. Inclusionary ways of responding to interactive troubles can also be produced, given a school culture that nurtures relational ways of engagement. This article presents such relational practices and argues thoroughly for their use.

Avoiding Pastoral Malpractice: Implications Of The Study Of Biblical Languages For Spiritual Care, Kevin Youngblood
Faculty Research and Publications
The study of Biblical languages is in decline in theological curricula across the nation if not around the globe. While this streamlined approach to ministerial training may be desirable for attracting students to programs and hastening degree completion, its long term effects on the spiritual health of the church could be catastrophic. This presentation addresses ministerial candidates in a major North American seminary to warn of some of the potential dangers of neglecting this aspect of pastoral training and practice.

Teaching For A Multifaith World; From Bubble To Bridge: Educating Christians For A Multifaith World, Debra S. Espinor
Teaching For A Multifaith World; From Bubble To Bridge: Educating Christians For A Multifaith World, Debra S. Espinor
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Similar but different is the metaphor to describe both multifaith books reviewed here—similar in that both are exploring the many facets of how to live in our multifaith world today, and different because the books are written for different audiences and ages. Teaching for a Multifaith World, edited by Eleazar S Fernandez, is written for an audience of seminarians. The language is pastoral and the book is a compilation from writers from many well-respected seminaries across the United States. The title of the book implies that this might be a textbook in a course within a religious studies program. From …

Perceptions Of Primary School Principals In Singapore About Their Role As Justice Agents, Kit Wah Antonia Teng
Perceptions Of Primary School Principals In Singapore About Their Role As Justice Agents, Kit Wah Antonia Teng
Doctoral Dissertations
Justice in school is central to both the Catholic church and the government of Singapore. Both institutions have expectations of principals as justice agents to serve the needs of every student by means of equality and equity in educational provision to all students. There is limited research on how principals of Catholic and government primary schools in Singapore perceive their role as justice agents and how they fulfill this expectation.
This qualitative research examined the experiences of primary school principals in Singapore in their enactment of educational leadership for justice. Of the 10 principals interviewed, 4 were principals of Catholic …
Exploring The Relationship Between Students' Perceptions Of The Jesuit Charism And Students' Moral Judgement, Scott Swenson
Exploring The Relationship Between Students' Perceptions Of The Jesuit Charism And Students' Moral Judgement, Scott Swenson
Doctoral Dissertations
Jesuit education has long focused on developing leaders of conscience, competence, and compassion. There is a gap in the literature examining if aspects of the Jesuit charism influence moral development. The Ignatian Identity Survey (IGNIS), and the Defining Issues Test – 2 (DIT-2), were administered to seniors at an all-male Jesuit high school. The IGNIS was used to explore students’ perceptions of five aspects of the Jesuit charism: 1) Openness to growth and educational excellence (OGEE), 2) Religious education and formation (REF), 3) Collaboration (COL), 4) Faith and justice (F&J), and 5) Active Reflection (AR). The DIT-2 was used to …

Degrees Are Not Enough : Success And Challenges Of Black Women Pursuing College Degrees., Dequinten Shrez Glenn
LSU Master's Theses
Black women are succeeding highly across the country in Higher Education. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2010) Black women received 66% of undergraduate degrees received by Black people in America in the 2007-2008 school year. This extreme success reflects their abilities to compete at the highest levels while attending institutions of higher education. Their success is not rewarded with job opportunities and equal wages which is reflected by their lack of representation in highly paid fields including science and medicine.
America has been organized and governed by systemic oppression of certain groups this oppression stems from a …
Catholic School Teachers' Perceptions Of Factors Related To Low Mathematics Achievement: A Qualitative Case Study, Andrzej Robert Piotrowski
Catholic School Teachers' Perceptions Of Factors Related To Low Mathematics Achievement: A Qualitative Case Study, Andrzej Robert Piotrowski
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study explored Catholic school teachers' perceptions of factors related to low mathematics achievement in second through fifth grade at three Catholic elementary schools in the Eastern United States. The three schools that participated in this study have varying degrees of ethnic diversity and vary in school enrollment. In 2015, all schools in the archdiocese produced standardized test results well above the national average in reading in second through fifth grades. In the same academic year, the gap between the national average and the district's second through fifth grade mathematics scores was significantly narrower. This study identifies the …
A Consensual Inquiry Of Teachers’ Responses To Classroom Situations: Implications For School Counselors, Jeffrey M. Warren, Gretchen G. Robinson
A Consensual Inquiry Of Teachers’ Responses To Classroom Situations: Implications For School Counselors, Jeffrey M. Warren, Gretchen G. Robinson
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Although often overlooked by school leaders, teacher emotions are key factors that impact classroom climate and therefore educational outcomes and student success. We use a framework grounded in rational emotive behavior therapy and social cognitive theory to explore teachers’ perceived thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in response to common classroom situations. The consensual qualitative research methodology was used to analyze data collected from 21 elementary school teachers. Findings suggest that psychosocial barriers exist among teachers who undermine effective instruction and classroom climate. Implications for school counselor practice are discussed.
