Teachers Perceptions Of Using Persuasive Technologies To Prevent And Reduce The Incidence Of Childhood Obesity, John E. Stephens
Teachers Perceptions Of Using Persuasive Technologies To Prevent And Reduce The Incidence Of Childhood Obesity, John E. Stephens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research of middle school health/physical education teachers’ perceptions regarding using technology in educational settings to help prevent and reduce the incidence of childhood overweight and obesity is lacking. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into those perceptions because that insight could be used to encourage teacher promotion of technology-based childhood obesity prevention initiatives in educational settings. Ajzen and Fishbein’s theory of planned behavior was used to support the conceptual framework. The research questions for this study were focused on teachers’ perceptions regarding using technology in educational settings to help prevent and reduce the incidence of childhood overweight …

Factors Influencing Student Enrollment In Career Academy Programs, Whitney Ketchledge, Michael Kosloski, Philip Reed
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
There is considerable research demonstrating strong benefits of the career academy model to students and teachers, but there is little indicating why students enroll in academies and what methods of recruitment may work best. This study assessed factors influencing students' decisions to enroll in career academy programs by looking at factors that influence students to apply for academy programs and reasons students have for choosing not to enroll in academy programs. A survey was used to collect the necessary data with n = 401 responses from students enrolled in an academy and n = 2,421 responses from students not enrolled …

Covid-19 Crisis Management Strategies And Challenges Of Educational Leaders In America, Corinne Brion, Bilgen Kiral
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
This research was conducted to understand how 30 American school leaders managed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative study used a case study approach. The researchers utilized a convenience and snowball sampling to conduct Zoom interviews in May 2020. The research findings revealed that leaders encountered numerous difficulties related to having to lead during two crises (a global pandemic and social-racial issues). Findings also indicated that leaders altered their style and used many strategies to lead in times of crises: They emphasized communication, became stress managers and cheer leaders, focused on developing a sense of belonging among teachers and students …

Exploring The Academic Workload Of Second Year Medical Students, Jason Pollock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Excessive academic workload has been cited as a leading cause of medical student stress, depression, and drop out. A study was conducted at a Southeastern Medical School to identify a relationship between institutionally prescribed workload (objective workload) and the students' perceptions (subjective workload). The existing school workload policy and the Rice University Center for Teaching Excellence workload estimator were utilized to calculate time to complete two types of academic artifacts: (1) assigned (required) course materials and (2) recommended (optional) course materials, which we compared at the Module level to identify difference in objective workload. The students' perceptions of workload were …

The Trust-Based Classroom: An Analysis Of Current Trends In Social And Emotional Learning And The Development Of A New Trust-Based Approach To Art Education, Ellen Prasse
Theses and Dissertations--Art and Visual Studies
Many current social and emotional learning (SEL) programs cite building trust as a key factor to an effective SEL program. Despite these references, however, they often lack an emphasis on teaching methods of building trust between students and their peers, the teacher, and the environment. Instead they focus on a specific aspect of teaching like the procedural practices of Responsive Classroom or communication and open-mindedness as in Open Circle. Explicitly building trust, however, could create an art classroom atmosphere conducive to high quality learning. This paper analyzes current trends in social and emotional learning and outlines the characteristics of the …

Part of the mandate of educational institutions, particularly State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) is to provide various forms of community, public, and volunteer services that contribute to the country’s social and economic development, hence the emergence of extension programs facilitated by the academe. Considered a novel concept is the academe-led participatory extension program such as the DOST-PCAARRD’s Science and Technology Community-Based for Inclusive Development (STC4iD) Program. This program introduces new community organizing (CO) perspectives in the geographically, economically, and socially disadvantaged areas (GESDA) of the Philippines. Hence, there is much to be learned about how academe-led CO can be instrumental …

Food Insecurity At Bucknell University: A Look At Student Experiences And Contributing Factors, Emma Curtin
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the prevalence of food insecurity at Bucknell and examines the contributing factors. Two research questions frame the present study: 1) What factors contribute to food insecurity on Bucknell’s campus? And 2) How do students at Bucknell experience food insecurity? Additionally, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on college student food insecurity is explored. The theoretical framework used in this thesis is Bourdieu’s theory of social reproduction. This framework coupled with a phenomenological approach to analyzing the data are the most appropriate for the present study because food insecurity is a systemic phenomenon, maintained by institutions but lived …

Exploring The Food Environment In Youth Recreation Facilities, Mallory Farris Brown
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Childhood obesity continues to be a worldwide problem and is associated with multiple poor health outcomes including diabetes, cancer, and hyperlipidemia. Youth who are overweight or obese also experience greater instances of depression, low self-esteem, and emotional and behavioral disorders. Given the negative impact of childhood obesity, there is a need to gain a clearer understanding of the issue by identifying causes and solutions. To curb the development and perpetuation of this disease, the root causes must be well-understood. The physical environment has often been described as contributing to childhood obesity, including schools, neighborhoods, and the home. Less known, however, …

Since the 1980s, the population of women prisoners incarcerated in the state of California had significantly increased by 500% more than that of the male prisoners. The United States had more incarcerated women than any other country. Along with this alarming rise in female incarceration, recidivism rates were also higher among female inmates. This problem has negatively affected women in California; whereas 57% of the women released from prison were rearrested within three to seven years. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to investigate how 18 women who had recidivated with the same or a different criminal …

The challenge of implementing effective online distance education courses for academics and institutions is a centuries-old task. We can look across early developments in the 18th century with the creation and delivery of correspondence courses; into the 20th century with teaching and learning across analog methods such as audio and video; and now in the current era of digitized mechanisms that enable the online classroom. This includes advances in internet technologies and computing abilities that are the empowering the backbone processes, bridging connectivity between the student and the instructor. As society has trended toward massive increases in online …

Harvest Of The Month, Abigail E. Heidenreich
Harvest Of The Month, Abigail E. Heidenreich
Indiana STEM Education Conference
Harvest of the Month curriculum exists in many states, but Indiana lacks a statewide effort in this area. To meet this need, collection of lessons with complementary activities that are specific to Indiana agriculture were created. The driving force behind the curriculum was to create a lesson that is fun and engaging for students, but also well-rounded and standards-based for teachers. Components of the lesson include Life Cycle Discussions, Taste Testing, Interactive Activities, and Journal Prompts. Partnering with Indiana farmers, a harvest video was created to accompany each lesson that features a different agricultural product grown in Indiana each month. …
