Hip-Hop Is Literacy: Enhancing English Skills Using Hip-Hop As A Culturally Responsive Multiliteracy, Kai C. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Recognizing the effectiveness of multiliteracies and replacing canonical texts with hip-hop lyrics, teachers can actively engage students in English classrooms at the same time allowing for cultural diversity and appreciation in the classroom. Although, several studies have been conducted to show the effectiveness of the use of non-traditional text in the classroom and the effectiveness of utilizing a culturally diverse curriculum to help with reading engagement and comprehension; this study examined how recognizing the cultural differences between student’s home and school life, acknowledging the importance of students’ culture, and utilizing a wide range of instructional materials, can promote the development …

Maternal Literacy Practices And Beliefs Impact Infant Development, Deirdre Cruz

Theses and Dissertations

Infancy is a pivotal time in the development of a human’s cognitive ability. There is a lack of research in this area, specifically on mothers and their beliefs about literacy practices and the home learning environment. By utilizing Bronfenbrenner’s ecological framework, this study explores the beliefs of mothers and how they impact the infants’ preliteracy skills and knowledge, which are paramount to success in kindergarten and beyond. Using a phenomenological study, the researcher interviewed mothers on their views of literacy, their infant’s home learning environment, and how they perceive their culture and mothering style impact their infants.

Understanding Economic Sustainability Through The Lens Of Education: Insights From Higher Education In Ireland, Daniel Kamphambale, Lucia Morales, Cormac Macmahon, Jon-Hans Coetzer

Papers

The IPCC’s 6th Assessment report reasserts overwhelming evidence that global warming is primarily due to anthropogenic activities causing imbalances in the carbon cycle. Our economic reliance on fossil fuels for industrialisation, urbanisation and farming exerts pressure on the Earth system. Population growth, affluence and technology represent significant sources of environmental pressure. Rapidly dispersed anthropogenic deposits constitute an alarming cause of modification of the Earth's crust, which has already become overwhelmingly dominant over nonhuman ecological processes. The current trajectory of socio-ecological interaction risks irreversible changes to the Earth system, where positive feedback may propel our life-supporting ecosystems beyond tipping points. The …

Twice-Exceptional Identification And Identity Formation: A Mixed Methods Study, Robin Goldin Tobin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study examined the parent perceptions of and relationships among intellectual potential, academic achievement, and the order of identification of exceptionality for twice-exceptional students. This study was supported by a community partner, a private educational testing and advocacy agency in a Western state.

Food Insecurity For The Immigrant Population During The Novel Coronavirus-19, Bridget Gallagher

The Graduate Review

The novel Coronavisur-19 (COVID-19) has caused s widespread loss of life in the United States and globally and wrought enormous changes to our culture and lives. COVID-19 also has caused and intensified food insecurity, especially for immigrants. The pandemic has made visible and exacerbated longstanding problems of food insecurity and hunger in America. This paper suggests several approaches to mitigating food insecurity. Focusing on the immigrant community, the author argues that we can reduce hunger by reexamining and reinvigorating existing community resources and practical strategies, including neighborhood ethnic food stores, community gardens, advocacy, and outreach programs; and by enlisting specific …

Preventative Weed Management Strategies In Arkansas Tomato Production, Gracie E. Morrison, Matthew Bertucci Jan 2022

Preventative Weed Management Strategies In Arkansas Tomato Production, Gracie E. Morrison, Matthew Bertucci

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Cost-effective weed suppression is an important consideration for tomato growers. Growers often choose methods which minimize hand labor, as hand weeding can be prohibitively expensive. This project determined economic viability of high tunnel tomatoes treated with several methods of weed control, both organic and chemical. These methods included: 2-week hand weeding, 1-week hand weeding, preemergent herbicide application (plots sprayed with herbicide prior to weed emergence), straw mulch (plots bedded with straw), landscape fabric (plots covered in fabric), and untreated weedy control plots. These six treatments were applied to randomized blocks in a high tunnel. Weeding, planting, and harvesting were all …

The Effect Of Taste On Swallowing: A Scoping And Systematic Review, Rachel Mulheren, Ross M. Westemeyer, Angela M. Dietsch Jan 2022

The Effect Of Taste On Swallowing: A Scoping And Systematic Review, Rachel Mulheren, Ross M. Westemeyer, Angela M. Dietsch

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Consuming foods and liquids for nutrition requires the coordination of several muscles. Swallowing is triggered and modified by sensory inputs from the aerodigestive tract. Taste has recently received attention as a potential modulator of swallowing physiology, function, and neural activation; additionally, taste impairment is a sequela of COVID-19. This review presents factors impacting taste and swallowing, systematically summarizes the existing literature, and assesses the quality of included studies. A search was conducted for original research including taste stimulation, deglutition-related measure(s), and human participants. Study design, independent and dependent variables, and participant characteristics were coded; included studies were assessed for quality …

Examining The Effects Of Instagram On Body Image And Eating Disorders Among Adolescent Girls, Ellie Cuoco

Education Theses

Throughout the past decade, as social media begins to grow in popularity, individuals' mental health is being sacrificed. The purpose of this paper is to delve into the link between Instagram and body image and eating disorders in young adolescents. Women are more likely to suffer body dissatisfaction and develop an eating disorder when encountering Instagram body ideals. Implementing lesson plans, including parents, and engaging school personnel is an excellent way to start the conversation and address adolescent body dissatisfaction to counter the known negative …
