Effect Of The Physical Inactivity Duration On Postprandial Lipid Metabolism The Morning After Exercise, Jieting Wang, Chelsea Merseal, Hadi Fareed, Remzi Satiroglu, Edward Coyle
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In physically active people (e.g., ~8,000 steps/d), an acute bout of exercise improves postprandial fat metabolism when measured the morning after exercise. However, in people who have been inactive for more than two days, the acute bout of exercise does not improve postprandial fat metabolism as reflected by a greater increase in plasma triglyceride concentration and a reduced whole body fat oxidation. This phenomenon whereby fat metabolism is suppressed by prior inactivity is termed ‘exercise resistance’. PURPOSE: The purpose was to determine if shorter periods (i.e., less than two days) of inactivity (i.e., 12, 24, 36 h) induce ‘exercise …

Comparison Of Oxygen Consumption In 4-Second Sprint Interval Exercise With Varied Intensity And Rest Period, Remzi Satiroglu, Christos Kyrillou, Jieting Wang, Edward Coyle
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sprint interval training (SIT) is usually performed at maximal ‘all-out’ intensities, that are 5-8-times higher than the power needed to elicit VO2peak. However, the %VO2peak associated with repeated submaximal power sprints (%Pmax), particularly when paired with varying rest periods, remains unknown. Investigating the %VO2peak in repeated submaximal power sprints is pivotal, enabling the personalization of workout routines to specific training goals.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to systematically investigate the acute physiological responses induced by three levels of %Pmax intensities (50%, 75%, and 100% of Pmax) with three varying …

The effects of the menstrual cycle (MC) on exercise metabolism and performance are equivocal. PURPOSE: To investigate whether the MC impacted submaximal exercise oxygen consumption (VO2) and Critical Power (CP) in recreationally active, eumenorrheic females. METHODS: Eight eumenorrheic females (Age: 33±8 y, VO2max: 36.9±3.8 ml/kg/min) completed fasted exercise testing in 3 distinct phases of the MC (early follicular, late follicular, and mid luteal). MC phase was determined using calendar-based counting, ovulation test strips, and confirmed via serum hormones (estrogen and progesterone). For submaximal exercise, participants cycled for 20 min at 50% VO2max while VO2 …

Chapman-Lopez, Leroy Bolden, Dylan T. Wilburn, Jeffery L. Heileson, Rodney Sturdivant, Andrew R. Gallucci, Leslee K. Funderburk, Jeffrey S. Forsse
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Previous literature has examined the benefits of consuming nitrate (NO3)-rich crops (e.g., beetroot, spinach, watercress, arugula) on endothelial function due to their positive influence on nitric oxide (NO) production from the utilization of nitrate-reducing bacteria in the oral microbiome. However, there has yet to be a study addressing how the method of consumption may influence the role the oral microbiome plays in the degradation of NO3 to NO from consuming an encapsulated NO3-rich crop. PURPOSE: To determine the differences in NO metabolite concentrations following two different methods (e.g., chewing, swallowing) of consuming the encapsulated arugula extract. METHODS: Eight, …

Nasal breathing (NB) during aerobic exercise has gained attention due to its potential benefits to physical performance and health adaptations. However, it is unclear how an NB-induced increase in the partial pressure of CO2 (PetCO2) affects the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX). PURPOSE: To determine the activity of GPX after 1-month of transient hypercapnic training induced by NB. METHODS: Fourteen males (age = 20.57 ± 1.22 yrs) were randomized to either the NB (n = 8) or combined breathing (CB, n = 6) group. Participants performed supervised aerobic training 4 times per week at ~70% …

Short-Term Cd8+ T Cell Depletion Results In Blunted Liver Inflammation In Old Mice, Konner J. Terrebonne, David J. Buckley, Blessy Joseph, Sunita Sharma, Daniel W. Trott
Short-Term Cd8+ T Cell Depletion Results In Blunted Liver Inflammation In Old Mice, Konner J. Terrebonne, David J. Buckley, Blessy Joseph, Sunita Sharma, Daniel W. Trott
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Advanced age is associated with an increase in basal inflammation of the organs. Previously we have found that T cells accumulate in the liver of old mice. A large proportion of these cells are CD8+ and produce inflammatory cytokines. We have previously demonstrated that CD8+ T cell depletion results in improved glucose tolerance in old mice. However, the mechanisms by which CD8+ depletion improves glucose tolerance is unclear. Therefore, we sought to determine whether pharmacologic CD8+ depletion would result in decreased liver specific inflammation in old mice compared to their old CD8+ intact counterparts. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis …

Sport performance is influenced by sport-specific requirements for body composition. One major predictor of body composition is protein intake. Higher protein intake tends to cause leaner body composition relative to lower protein intake, especially during caloric deficit. In Bexar County, ~72% of the adult population is overweight/obese and 15.5% are diabetic. This suggests that high protein diet could be a high leverage option in the San Antonio population for optimizing body composition for sport performance. Furthermore, late life sporting activity and protein intake is a primary method for mitigating sarcopenia, osteoporosis, fractures, and accidental death in post-menopausal women. PURPOSE: …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a gradual loss of renal filtration and has been shown to be associated with lower levels of vitamin D (Vit-D). Vit-D is highly synthesized in the kidneys and is linked to multiple health conditions. Aerobic exercise of differing intensity and modality has shown potential in acutely improving Vit-D concentration in healthy and diseased populations. Purpose: To determine the influence of acute bouts of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) and steady-state exercise (SSE) on Vit-D concentrations in individuals with moderate stages of CKD. Methods: A total of 13 participants (n = 7 women; n = 6 men; …

Vitamin D (VD) deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in the world due to various factors (e.g., lack of sun exposure, dietary considerations). Currently the utilization of exercise may act as an intervention for VD deficiencies to promote increases in VD concentrations in healthy populations. This could largely be due to the loss of calcium from aerobic exercise (AE), leading to a hormonal response [(e.g., parathyroid hormone (PTH)] and the activation of cytochrome’s (e.g., CYP2R1, CYP27B1) responsible for the regulation of VD. Thus, AE may serve as an intervention to promote VD synthesis due to the impacted biological …

Challenges That Educators Face When Providing English Language Arts Instruction To K-5 Elementary Students In Title 1 Schools, Shari A. Clarke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Students in Title 1 school districts continue to fall far behind their peers academically in comparison to neighboring suburban districts. School reform has unsuccessfully attempted to improve test scores by consistently changing reading curriculums and mandating the use of various resources that fail when implemented. Struggling school districts must use research-based strategies that include educators’ perspectives to best identify how to successfully increase student achievement. Test scores reveal that schools in a Title 1 school district in northern New Jersey are lacking proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA). The purpose of this study was to examine the challenges that educators …

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the 6th most common cancer in worldwide. Cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel quid chewing are its major risk factors other factors that can lead to OSCC include excessive sun exposure, viral or fungal infection, poor nutrition, and poor oral hygiene. The carcinogenesis of OSCC occurs gradually and oral epithelial dysplasia is considered a potential histologic precursor of OSCC. Most OSCC cases are preceded by clinically evident oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). The aim of this review is to correlate the association between Candida species and oral potentially malignant disorders and its possible mechanisms …

Discussion Papers
Early childhood interventions aim to promote skill acquisition and poverty reduction. While their short-term success is well established, research on longer-term effectiveness is scarce, particularly in LDCs. We present results of a randomized scalable intervention in India, that affected developmental outcomes in the short-term, including cognition (0.36 SD p=0.005), receptive language (0.26 SD p=0.03) and expressive language (0.21 SD p=0.03). After 4.5 years, when the children were on average 7.5 years old, IQ was no longer affected, but impacts persisted relative to the control group in numeracy (0.330 SD, p=0.007) and literacy (0.272 SD, p=0.064) driven by the most disadvantaged.

Referral Patterns Of Neonatal Healthcare Professionals For Cleft Lip And Palate Patients, Alyssa Morrow
Referral Patterns Of Neonatal Healthcare Professionals For Cleft Lip And Palate Patients, Alyssa Morrow
Annual Research Symposium
Cleft Lip and Palate patients are some of the most vulnerable and complex orthodontic patients. They face a myriad of health challenges including psychological, nutritional, auditory, speech, airway, skeletal, and dental. Ideal comprehensive treatment for CLP patients is provided via multidisciplinary teams of healthcare providers. However, there is currently limited access to proper multidisciplinary care for CLP patients in the US, partly due to lack of education regarding available resources. For the most effective treatment and optimal outcomes, it is essential that coordinated care starts at birth and that parental education begins as soon as CLP is detected in utero. …

Place-Based Multimodal Narratives With Storymap Js, Laurel Phillips, Johnny Allred
The Utah English Journal
At the beginning of a recent cross-country road trip, Johnny pulled open a map app on his phone and entered his final destination—Fort Worth, Texas—into the search bar, along with three other stops: the Maverik in Moab (he had to load up on Dr. Pepper); a hotel in Santa Rosa, New Mexico; and “Cadillac Ranch” in Amarillo (Google it). For the next 1,200 miles, the digital map guided him and his family along the path, setting the stage for experiences and stories that the family will tell and retell for years to come.
That example—the use of maps to guide …
