G86-819 At What Weight Should Holstein Heifers Freshen?, Jeffrey F. Keown Jan 1986

G86-819 At What Weight Should Holstein Heifers Freshen?, Jeffrey F. Keown

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This guide offers research findings on the appro-priate weights for Holstein heifer freshening and sug-gests producers be aware of economic considerations involved in heifer freshening.

Most producers realize that the weight of a heifer at freshening affects the amount of milk produced during the first lactation. Heifers not fed balanced nutritional diets before freshening will not produce at an optimum level since they do not have the body reserves to maintain peak produc-tion. Likewise, a heifer that freshens very heavy will not pro-duce as much as she should because she is too heavy. There must be a break-even point at …

G86-820 How To Maximize Income By Managing Days Dry, Jeffrey F. Keown Jan 1986

G86-820 How To Maximize Income By Managing Days Dry, Jeffrey F. Keown

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This guide discusses the benefits of maintaining the optimum calving interval and offers suggestions for accomplishing this reproductive management technique.

Most dairy producers are aware that an optimum calving interval is 365 days. This is a normal lactation length of 305 days with a dry period of 60 days. This interval is often looked at as a goal to strive toward rather than a goal that must be reached to maximize income from the sale of milk.

Community Education: Processes And Programs, Theodore J. Kowalski Jan 1986

Community Education: Processes And Programs, Theodore J. Kowalski

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

"Community education is on the threshold of a major breakthrough. It has captured the imagination of both educational and lay leaders throughout the U.S."

Although these words are an appropriate description of community education today, they were written by V. M. Kerensky 14 years ago. An idea that never took hold to the degree its advocates predicted, community education, nevertheless, refuses to die. Over the past two or three years, the interest of educationalleaders has been stimulated once again by this proposal for expanding the mission and decision-making processes of public schools. In 49 of the 50 states (Hawaii being …

Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …

A Utilitarian Approach To Spelling, Peggy Jean Laws Korane Jan 1986

A Utilitarian Approach To Spelling, Peggy Jean Laws Korane

Theses

Traditionally, most spelling curricula includes the routine of introduction, practice, and testing of a weekly spelling lesson. This mundane repetition need not become a nemesis. The following spelling curriculum is a utilitarian approach to a spelling curriculum for the future. With this utilitarian approach, it can be made to enhance other work being performed in the classroom, making all experiences valuable in meaning other than learning a group of predetermined words chosen at random.

This utilitarian spelling program has been created because of a need to enhance legitimate meaning in the study of spelling. Past experiences have determined that students …

Child Care Options: Impact On Child Development, Jane Frances Biga Wilson Jan 1986

Child Care Options: Impact On Child Development, Jane Frances Biga Wilson

Graduate Research Papers

The desire to establish learning environments that are both stimulating and responsive and which will contribute to the cognitive, emotional, language, physical, and social development of the preschool child is the goal of parents and educators alike. Piaget proposed that children pass through a series of successive stages and that they develop intellectually by acting and reacting with their world (Travers, 1982). This particular learning theory implies that an enriched environment would encourage intellectual development and has provided a rationale for early child care and education.

A Comparison Of Teaching Methods With Achievement Scores In The Home Economics Classroom, Denise Schares Jan 1986

A Comparison Of Teaching Methods With Achievement Scores In The Home Economics Classroom, Denise Schares

Graduate Research Papers

Teaching methods and their relationship to learner achievement have long been an area of concern to educators. Experienced classroom teachers know that some instructional methods are more effective than others for presenting specific types of information to students. Teachers in all curriculum areas and at all grade levels are constantly evaluating methods of instruction in order to determine the methods that will result in the highest level of achievement for their students as the outcome of their instruction. Student achievement received added attention in recent years with the release of the report by the National Commission on Excellence in Education …

The Relationship Of Exercise And Diet To Total Cholesterol And High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol College Age Males And Females, William F. Rothschild

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries and is defined as a form of arteriosclerosis in which fatty lesions called atheromatous plaques form on the intima of arteries. The formation of these plaques begins early, within the first two decades of life, and may be started by damage to the endothelial cells and intima of the artery walls (Guyton, 1981). A number of factors may cause the initial damage, including physical abrasion of the endothelium, abnormal substances in the blood or pulsating arterial pressure on the vessel wall (Guyton, 1981).

There is a growing body of epidemiologic, genetic, experimental, and …

Care During Death, Grief And Loss: The Effects Of A Workshop And Clinical Experience On Student Nurses' Attitudes And Actions, Lynda Armstrong Wilson Jan 1986

Care During Death, Grief And Loss: The Effects Of A Workshop And Clinical Experience On Student Nurses' Attitudes And Actions, Lynda Armstrong Wilson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. Nurses, members of a society which tends to avoid and deny death, grief, and loss, are frequently in situations where they must interact with persons experiencing grief from death or loss. Often educational experiences have done little to prepare student nurses to cope in positive and supportive ways. Student nurses need to develop self-awareness of their attitudes and anxieties toward death, loss, and grief; modify negative attitudes; and develop a repertoire of interpersonal skills to support persons experiencing grief. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine if academic, and experiential learning could influence the clinical performance of …

A Comparative Study Of The Learning Styles Of Southeast Asian And American Caucasian College Students On Two Seventh-Day Adventist Campuses, Sally Lam-Phoon

Problem. While much research has been conducted on learning style in the United States, no known empirical study has been done to compare the learning styles of Asian and Caucasian students on Seventh-day Adventist campuses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in learning-style preferences between a group of Asian students at Southeast Asia Union College in Singapore and Caucasian students at Andrews University in Michigan.

Method. This study employed the Productivity Environmental Preference Scale to measure the learning styles of the two groups. The data which were computed and analyzed to test seven null hypotheses …
