Second Language Learners: Their Special Needs In Content Area Reading, Viola Flores, Nancy Hadaway
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Often teachers working with limited English Proficient (LEP), or non-English speaking individuals are at a loss as to how to help them succeed in the heavily content oriented secondary school. These students are more likely to encounter academic frustrations and retention; and as a result, they are more likely to drop out of school (Steinburg, Blinde, and Chan, 1984). Thus, teachers should consider developing strategies for effectively working with LEP students.

A Model Program For Limited-English-Proficient Students In Home Economics, Sylvia Castillo
A Model Program For Limited-English-Proficient Students In Home Economics, Sylvia Castillo
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author structured and implemented lessons for a model home economics program to aid limited-English-proficient (LEP) students in an elementary school district where a substantial number of students were identified as being educationally disadvantaged. The program's goals were to help the LEP students increase English language proficiency while acquiring content area skills and competencies.
The program's structured lessons contained six basic components: vocabulary development, scripted lesson, audiovisual presentation, teacher demonstration, student hands-on activity, and teacher/student evaluation. After completion of the eight lessons, the twenty target LEP students demonstrated measurable, significant gains not only in content area knowledge, skills and competencies …

Development Of A Revised Curriculum For The Dietetic Technology - Nutrition Program At Malcolm X College, Perla Miranda-Kushida
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Within the governance of Malcom X College as an educational institution, the Dietetic Technology (DT)-Nutrition program underwent an intensive audit in order to identify its strengths and weaknesses as a program and make corresponding changes as needed for the benefit of the students and the college as a whole. As a result of this audit, a need for curriculum revision was established so that the DT-Nutrition program can meet new expectations and demands by the students, the employment field for dietetic technicians, and the accreditation agency: hence, the culmination of the old program and the emergence of a new curriculum …
