G88-883 Managing Of Disease To Produce Antibiotic/Residue Free Animal Food Products, Duane Rice, R. Gene White Jan 1988

G88-883 Managing Of Disease To Produce Antibiotic/Residue Free Animal Food Products, Duane Rice, R. Gene White

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the use of antibiotics in animals, approved drugs and extra-label drugs, and ways to test for drug residue. Infectious diseases in livestock are costly, and prevention is the best approach to minimize such losses. Yet despite good management practices and extensive preventive measures, disease outbreaks do occur, and treatments become necessary. To obtain antibiotic residue-free products from food animals, knowledgeable decisions regarding the use of medications are necessary. It is important to realize that antibiotic treatments are used only to eliminate or shorten the duration of existing infections, or to prevent secondary bacterial infections. These infections may …

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese Jan 1988

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Biotechnology is a diverse array of technologies which today are in various stages of evolution and development. To understand them and the potential application of these technologies to agriculture, it is helpful to consider them in a historical perspective. In addition, it is important to understand the interdependence of biotechnologies on traditional, well developed technologies. The commercial development of biotechnology is more difficult than imagined even as recently as five years ago. Also, the problems being addressed generally demand a much better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the plant and animal systems under study. Nonetheless, there is a …

Economic Changes From The Use Of Biotechnology In Production Agriculture, Loren W. Tauer Jan 1988

Economic Changes From The Use Of Biotechnology In Production Agriculture, Loren W. Tauer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The potential economic impact of biotechnology in production agriculture is discussed. There are challenges and difficulties in completing economic research when little production information is available on biotechnologies. I argue that little impact differences exist between cost-reducing versus output-increasing technological change. Rapid technological change results in low average returns in agriculture but continuous early innovators earn higher returns. Various plant and animal technologies are presented and discussed.

A Pilot Study Of The Effects Of Cross-Age Teaching On Eating Habits, Lucy Andrick Sullivan Jan 1988

A Pilot Study Of The Effects Of Cross-Age Teaching On Eating Habits, Lucy Andrick Sullivan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A major goal in nutrition education is to promote adequate nourishment throughout the entire populace. Frequently, teenagers are identified as a population subgroup with poor dietary habits. Adolescents tend to skip meals, snack excessively, adopt poor dietary patterns, and, in general, have chosen rather carefree attitudes toward nutrition. Medical science asserts that the benefits of proper eating habits, established early in life, have influenced the ability to: concentrate, think on a higher plane, enjoy physical well being, and maintain good health. On the contrary, improper eating habits, established early in life, serve to increase the chance of heart disease, hypertension, …

Parent Involvement In A Public Preschool: Proposed Guidelines For An Effective Program, Bonnie Dunham Jan 1988

Parent Involvement In A Public Preschool: Proposed Guidelines For An Effective Program, Bonnie Dunham

Graduate Research Papers

There has been a substantial amount of research indicating that the major source of a student's motives for achievement, as well as his or her personality structure, is the home in which he or she grows up (Gordon, 1977). The behavior and attitudes of parents, as well as the nature of the physical setting and materials provided, have a direct impact on the child's behavior before and during the school years. The school is another source of a child's intellectual and personality development. The nature of the curriculum, the mode of teacher behavior, and the classroom ecology all influence not …

The Middle School: A Review Of Current Literature, Lindy K. Daters Jan 1988

The Middle School: A Review Of Current Literature, Lindy K. Daters

Graduate Research Papers

Education in the United States has presented many patterns of school organization. Separate junior and senior high schools were suggested in the early 1900 1 s, but the grade levels and ages for distinguishing these divisions were unclear (Wiles & Bondi, 1981). The junior high was designed to bridge the gap between elementary and high school. It usually included grades 7-8-9. An alternative to the junior high school, the middle school, began to emerge in the late 1950 1 s. The middle school was designed to facilitate grades 6-7-8. Its development was primarily to relieve overcrowding and to provide an …

Health Knowledge And Health Behavior Of Deaf Adults In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Leslie Ellen Smith Jan 1988

Health Knowledge And Health Behavior Of Deaf Adults In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Leslie Ellen Smith

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the present health knowledge and health behavior of deaf adults in Black Hawk County, Iowa. In addition, the relationship between knowledge and behavior was examined. It was hypothesized that health knowledge and health behavior would be positively correlated.

A list of deaf adults was compiled through contacts with public and private agencies serving the deaf. Subjects received an introductory letter and response form by mail with subsequent telephone follow-up. Twenty-three deaf adults participated in the study representing 21% of the known, non-institutionalized deaf adults in the county. Participants were interviewed with …
