The Effects Of An Employee Fitness Program On Absenteeism And Health Care Costs, Brian C. Bell
The Effects Of An Employee Fitness Program On Absenteeism And Health Care Costs, Brian C. Bell
Student Work
Health care expenditures in the United States have continued to climb at an alarming rate. In 1982, health care expenditures accounted for nearly $322.4 billion of the gross national product (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1982). Health care expenditures are expected to consume nearly 12 percent of the nation's economic output by the year 1990, reaching nearly $756 billion in projected costs (Cullen and Towe, 1983). Although health care costs have climbed at an annual rate of less than 10 percent, these costs have continued to increase in the private sector, which currently absorbs one-fourth of the nation's …

Winona Campus Life
Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

Norms For The 5-Minute Run Test For College Men And Women, Michael R. Samardzija
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Previous studies have demonstrated that the 5-minute run test (5MRT) is a valid test in determining cardiovascular (CV) endurance. This study was done to develop norms for the 5MRT for college-age students. The subjects were 195 men and 191 women attending Brooklyn College and Loma Linda University. Test-retest reliability was established (r=0.93) for the 5MRT with 20 subjects. The distance run on the 5MRT by all the subjects were used to develop norms using percentiles. Fitness categories were established using standard deviations from the mean.

The number of men and women with lower extremity disability is growing {Pollock, Miller, Linnerind, Laughridge, Coleman, and Alexander, 1974). A chief cause of this growth is an increase in the number of accidents damaging the spinal column (Pollock et al., 1974). However, many individuals are also born with these types of disabilities, and one of the causes is a disease termed spina bifida. Spina bifida occurs in about 3 per 1000 live births (Batshaw & Perret, 1981). The spine of children born with this defect is bifida and may be exposed, along with nervous tissue surrounding the area, on …

Policies, Guidelines, And Services For The Developmentally Disabled Student At Oxnard College, Joan Jones
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A current issue in the California Community Colleges is that of serving the "developmentally disabled" learner. Developmentally disabled students are an extremely heterogeneous group ranging from individuals who are intellectually gifted but who have severe physical impairments to those who are severely mentally retarded but who are physically perfectly sound. The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine the California Community Colleges' policies on serving the developmentally disabled adult and lo identify the federal and state statutes regulating the community colleges serving the developmentally disabled adult; (2) to determine what programs and related services are offered for the developmentally …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In the past two decades, much has changed in education. The civil rights movement in the 1960s focused attention on the unequal schooling of minorities and the poor preparation of those groups for school. At the same time Jerome Bruner and Benjamin Bloom were claiming that children can learn any subject at any age and that they attain half their intellectual ability by the age of 4, thus emphasizing the importance of early childhood education (Elkind, 1986). In the later 60s and early 70s, when it was becoming clear that new early childhood programs were not enough alone to meet …

Survey Of Attitudes Of Licensed Dental Hygienists Toward Continuing Education In A State With Mandatory Continuing Education Versus A State Without Mandatory Continuing Education, Katharine Reeves Behroozi
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to compare attitudes of licensed dental hygienists toward continuing education (CE) in two states: Kentucky, a state with mandatory continuing education (MCE) as a requirement for dental hygiene re-licensure and Virginia, a state without MCE for dental hygiene re-licensure. A self-designed, 28-item instrument, Continuing Education Attitudinal Questionnaire, was mailed to a stratified and random sample of 400 licensed dental hygienists in Kentucky and Virginia. Employing the chi-square test for independence, analysis of results revealed that Kentucky participants responded more affirmatively than Virginia participants to attitudinal statements regarding CE, particularly in areas of MCE, benefits …
