Winona Campus Life, Mass Communication Department

Winona Campus Life

Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

Evaluation Of The Utilization Of The Home Economics Base Curriculum In The West Virginia Middle School, Lana J. Hardy Jan 1989

Evaluation Of The Utilization Of The Home Economics Base Curriculum In The West Virginia Middle School, Lana J. Hardy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The junior high school was created in the early 1900's from the eight year elementary or grammar school and a four year high school. At that time administrators and teachers believed that the needs of the middle year students were being overlooked (Jackson, 1986). The current concept of middle schools began developing in the late 1950's and was being implemented in 1963 (Kindred, Wolotkiewicz, Mickelson, & Coplein, 1981). This reorganization of the middle/junior high school started in West Virginia in the late 1970's. Home economics educators in the state wanted to provide input into the content of these new programs, …

The Breakfast Food Challenge: Helping To Meet Personal Needs In The Science Classroom, Harold R. Hungerford, Kevin C. Wise Jan 1989

The Breakfast Food Challenge: Helping To Meet Personal Needs In The Science Classroom, Harold R. Hungerford, Kevin C. Wise

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

One of the four Project Synthesis goal clusters for science education focuses on meeting the personal needs of students who are maturing in a scientific/technological society. Many existing science programs fall short in this regard, particularly if teachers are seriously interested in changing learner behavior for the better. One component of learner behavior that is highly consistent with the personal needs goal cluster of Project Synthesis is helping students become more intelligent consumers in a scientific society.

Aids And Dementia, Mari Lagerstrom Jan 1989

Aids And Dementia, Mari Lagerstrom

Graduate Research Papers

The origin of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is unknown. AIDS was first recognized in the United States in 1981. Since 1981, AIDS has spread rapidly throughout the country. Initially, cases of AIDS were confined to New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles (Harris County Medical Society, 1987). AIDS is a disease caused by a virus that destroys an individual's defenses against infections (United States Department of Education, 1987). It is essentially a disease of the immune system (Check, 1988). The AIDS virus, known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV can so weaken an individual's immune system that he or …

G89-915 Testing Livestock Feeds For Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Sheep And Horses, Rick Grant, Bruce Anderson, Richard J. Rasby, Terry L. Mader

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide provides tips on how to determine feeds you should analyze and nutrients to measure. It tells how to interpret the results of feed analysis.

Why Test Feeds?

Nutrient concentration can vary considerably in feeds, especially forages. Protein in alfalfa hay can range from 10 to 25 percent or more of the dry matter; grass hay will contain between four and 18 percent protein.

Use feed tests to target specific feeds to different livestock. Feed high quality forage to the most productive livestock or when nutrient needs are highest. Feed lower quality forage to animals with lower nutrient needs. …

Effects Of Various Prekindergarten Learning Environments On A Child's Social Development And Self-Concept, Joel E. Raasch Jan 1989

Effects Of Various Prekindergarten Learning Environments On A Child's Social Development And Self-Concept, Joel E. Raasch

Graduate Research Papers

An important topic in education today is the issue of preschools for four-year-olds. In particular, there is much talk about what type of curriculum is in the best interest of the prekindergarten youngster. Much is said about "developmentally-appropriate programs for preschoolers", and the search is on for the most appropriate preschool model which will bring about the most desirable and long-term results in our nation's children. This search has been intensified in recent years as state legislatures have begun considering the question of whether or not to issue mandates that would require public schools in their states to offer preschool …

Eating Disorders: A Growing Problem In American Society, Barry A. Thompson Jan 1989

Eating Disorders: A Growing Problem In American Society, Barry A. Thompson

Graduate Research Papers

One of the newest and most difficult medical problems facing American society today is that of eating disorders. This paper will focus on two of the most common types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Physical, psychological, and behavioral changes which occur in individuals afflicted with either of these disorders will be developed, as well as the diagnostic characteristics of each disorder.

Characteristics And Treatment Of Bulimia, Cindy Becker Jan 1989

Characteristics And Treatment Of Bulimia, Cindy Becker

Graduate Research Papers

Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by the episodic ingestion of large quantities of food in a relatively short period of time and, in most cases, these •binges• are followed by self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse or fasting (Ordman & Kirschenbaum, 1986). The vast majority of bulimic cases are women (only 10% are male) and it is estimated that as much as 20% of high school and collegiate-aged females are actively engaged in bulimic behaviors on a regular basis (Hale & Ware, 1984). More specifically, these behaviors include various aspects of the following according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual …

Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia At The Secondary School Level, Blair T. Thielen Jan 1989

Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia At The Secondary School Level, Blair T. Thielen

Graduate Research Papers

The eating disorders of anorexia nervosa and bulimia have not been just recently documented; in fact, anorexia nervosa has been recognized in medical literature for centuries, as references were made by Morton (1694), Gull (1874) and Laseque (1873), and bulimia has been recognized 1 by that term for the last few decades (Peters, Butterfield, Swassing, & McKay, 1984). It has been in recent years, however, that these eating disorders have received considerable attention in literature and research. Partially responsible for this relatively new-found prominence is the large number of young adolescents who are involved.

G89-947 Buying Meat By The Serving, Dennis E. Burson Jan 1989

G89-947 Buying Meat By The Serving, Dennis E. Burson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Buying meat by the serving rather than by the pound can save you money. Determining cost per serving is covered here.

Smart shoppers use cost per serving rather than price per pound in making meat selection decisions. Price per pound can be misleading because all cuts will not yield the same number of servings per pound.

Although some boneless cuts may cost more on a per pound basis, they may be more economical due to less waste. The amount of bone and waste fat determines the number of servings of cooked meat a cut will yield. Cost of the edible …

G89-944 Home Freezing Of Cooked And Prepared Foods, Katharine P. Riddle, Anne Mae Brenner Jan 1989

G89-944 Home Freezing Of Cooked And Prepared Foods, Katharine P. Riddle, Anne Mae Brenner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Preparing food ahead of time and freezing it can save time, energy and money. Frozen cooked foods also add variety to your menu, offer quick meals for unexpected company and provide nutritious choices for busy days.

When you are preparing a main dish, it takes only a little more effort and time to make enough for several meals. You can freeze all of the prepared food in meal size packages, or serve part of the food immediately and freeze the rest.

It is more economical to make your own supply of prepared dishes than to purchase commercially prepared foods.

Some mushrooms and most puffballs are edible; some are foul-smelling, many are considered unsightly, and a few are poisonous; but when they appear on a lawn, most are considered a nuisance.

G89-935 Planning For Healthy Eating (Revised November 1994), Darlene Martin, Harriet Kohn, Charlotte Kern Jan 1989

G89-935 Planning For Healthy Eating (Revised November 1994), Darlene Martin, Harriet Kohn, Charlotte Kern

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Dietary recommendations and tips for healthy eating are included to help reduce the risk of certain diseases.

What is healthy eating? It's eating the types and amounts of foods that promote the best possible health for you within the limits of your environmental and genetic makeup. Healthy eating can help you maintain a desirable weight. It helps reduce the risk of heart disease, some types of cancer, and obesity.

As we do more scientific studies on healthy eating, the recommendations may be refined. It pays to be alert to new, well-documented information about what constitutes healthy eating.

The National Research …
