Background/Objectives: An elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] level, which is a prevalent cardiovascular risk factor, is genetically determined by a size polymorphism of its apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)] component. Despite its genetic control, Lp(a) level increases in response to dietary saturated fat (SFA) reduction. We tested the roles of apo(a) size and characteristics in modulating Lp(a) response to SFA reduction. Methods: We assessed apo(a) characteristics in 165 African Americans experiencing a 24% Lp(a) increase resulting from SFA reduction [16% at an average American Diet diet (AAD) to 6% at a DASH-type diet]. Apo(a) effects were tested based on the following factors: (1) the presence …

Making Science-Inquiry Learning Accessible For Students With Complex Support Needs, Sarah Koebley, Shawnee Wakeman, Lindsay Ruhter, David Pugalee, Meagan Karvonen
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
Inquiry learning through engagement with scientific practices has proven to be an effective instructional practice for general education students. Although students with complex support needs (CSN) are required to have access to the same grade-appropriate academic content in science as their peers without CSN, it remains a challenge for special education teachers to design instruction around student inquiry and science conceptual understanding. The 5E Science Education for Special Educators (5E-SESE) Model combines three well-established conceptual constructs (three-dimensional science standards, Universal Design for Learning [UDL], and the 5E Model) to support special educators in delivering quality science instruction. With the 5E …

A Mixed Methods Approach To Understanding What Knowledge Alabama K-12 In-Service Educators Hold In Regard To School-Based Trauma-Informed Practices, Katherine Busch
All ETDs from UAB
Childhood trauma is prevalent in epidemic proportions, with data showing 40%-90% of individuals experiencing one or more childhood traumatic events that permanently changes neurobiology and stress response. These stress responses can manifest in behaviors that lead to problems in schools, including behavior issues, special education referrals, suspensions or expulsions, and decreased academic achievement. In adulthood, these traumatic stressors increase the odds of engaging in risky behaviors and developing chronic health conditions. Schools can be places of healing, promoting resilience and utilizing trauma-informed practices to help children and educators. Emerging studies show promise in the benefits of school-based trauma-informed practices, but …

A Localized Strategy To Boost Public Opinion And Increase Community Support For Rural Public Education By Understanding Parental Motivations For School Choice, Stephanie Marie Lambrecht
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Families and educators understand school choice as a broad concept, however its implications for rural public education in Virginia are less frequently considered. In rural areas, school choice has a disproportionate impact due to funding formulas and the effects of average daily membership (ADM) on school budgets. While there is a great deal of research on school choice, the rationale behind families’ decisions varies depending on the cultural and material resources of their community. It is vital to consider the regional and cultural context when developing strategies to support rural public schools. By analyzing motivations and factors which influence school …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Postsecondary education (PSE) programs play a crucial role in preparing students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) for adulthood by enhancing employment, independent living, and social skills Zhang et al., (2023). The expansion of PSE programs has provided students with diverse opportunities tailored to their needs, benefiting both individuals with disabilities and their peers without disabilities. However, significant disparities remain in health, economic, and social outcomes for individuals with disabilities. Legislative support, such as the Higher Education Opportunity Act, has promoted inclusion. Still, challenges persist, including low self-disclosure rates and inconsistencies in Summary of Performance (SOP) documentation (Graybill et al., …
