Which Way Is It Pointed?, Louis Foley Jan 1968

Which Way Is It Pointed?, Louis Foley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The etymology of the word punctuation leads us back to its remote ancestor, the Latin punctus~ a "point" in the sense of the dot which we now call a "period" because it marks the end of a period. Latin did not require punctuation as our modern languages do, because the forms of words kept their construction clear independently of word-order. Even the period did not seem necessary until fairly late, since the termination of a sentence was shown by the verb which came regularly at the end.

Flexible-Modular Scheduling With The Slow Learner, Eugene Balk Jan 1968

Flexible-Modular Scheduling With The Slow Learner, Eugene Balk

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

At Mason City High School this year something new has been added in the biology curriculum. It is part of the New Design, better known as Phase II Flex. Approximately 160 sophomores are in the program and are known as low achievers for various reasons. One of the reasons is that they are no longer interested in school. The lack of interest may be due to the traditional school day (fifty-five minutes, six periods a day) or to the fact that the students have never achieved success in anything they have attempted in school.

Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr. Jan 1968

Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper describes the organization of a laboratory course in Soil Chemical Analysis. Students select and pursue small research problems to gain experience in the soil analyses that are discussed in lecture and required in the laboratory. Involvement of the class in an actual research problem proved challenging to both the instructor and the class. The data obtained often supplemented current departmental research. Individual projects were found to be easier to supervise than team problems. This paper reports results of a team project examining parameters of a pot experiment. Shape of the pot, methods of watering, methods of fertilizing, and …

A Comparison Of Two Types Of Instructional Models Used In Teaching Automatic Transmission Concepts, Kirk Lewis Ready Jan 1968

A Comparison Of Two Types Of Instructional Models Used In Teaching Automatic Transmission Concepts, Kirk Lewis Ready

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In the teaching of a topic such as automatic transmissions, the instructor may often encounter difficulty in determining the most effective procedure for presenting the information. Industrial arts has long accepted the hypothesis that the use of the demonstration nethod is superior to the lecture method for instruction in technical subjects. However, demonstrations may take different forms. Today, the use of cut-away models is often replacing the use of working models as a teaching aid to be used in the demonstration for both industry and education. The use of either style of aid will be an improvement on the lecture …

The Elementary School Counselor: A Man Of Action, Robert Mendelson

Faculty Publications

The elementary school counselor; a newly-emerged member of the pupil personnel term; is a specialist whose skills are directed toward helping children develop in a healthy; normal way. His skills should allow him to understand the concerns children have; the meanings and goals of their behavior; and the psychological systems which affect their lives. His training should aid him in communicating his acceptance and his interest in each child. Academic preparation should include specialized courses in counseling and in psychology. Research supports the counseling function as one of the primary duties of the elementary school counselor. Although the bulk of …
