A Multi-Media Approach To Reading, Lucetta A. Johnson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

As a new teacher in the Allegan Public Schools one of the primary goals for the year was to present reading activities to the children in as many interesting ways as possible to enrich their reading experiences. Conflict And Change In The Academic Community, Sidney Hook Jan 1970

Conflict And Change In The Academic Community, Sidney Hook

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The direction of change which holds the greatest promise for deepening, enriching and developing the great humanistic and scientific legacies of university education is by liberalizing the curriculum and processes of teaching and learning in the light of the ideals of the liberal arts tradition. These legacies may stem from the contributions of socially privileged and elite groups of the past. Today our technology makes it possible for all men and women who are willing and able, to partake of them, to contribute to them, and to find meaning and enjoyment in them. The liberal arts tradition is strengthened by …

Recreational Reading In The Elementary School, Doris Fistler Jan 1970

Recreational Reading In The Elementary School, Doris Fistler

Graduate Research Papers

A school librarian is often called upon to talk with groups of teachers and parents, as well as to present the library program to the administration, the school board, and the community. For these talks, more concrete material than, "I think . . . ," is needed. The purpose of this project was to gain from wide and varied reading a background that would serve as source material in presenting recreational reading to the above-mentioned groups.

Literally volumes of material have been written on the subject of recreational reading, numerous research studies have been made, and general concern by the …

THE ISSUE

They Want to Understand
The concern of two generations over events that angered and bewildered observers during a tense spring is captured in the cover photo. They are listening to U.S. Senator Margaret Chase Smith answer questions on the Asian war. Mrs. Smith and Senator Edmund S. Muskie came to Colby, summoned by students from 17 Maine institutions, to state positions on the war and domestic strife that sparked college strikes across the country. A report on the strike appears on pages 1-4.

Only In Our Learning-The Purpose Of An Academic Community, Harris L. Wofford Jr.

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The search for truth is indeed the highest purpose of an academic community; it is truth as a question that can make man free. This is the vision without which people perish. Without it, we in our multiversities may win the world but lose our souls. Yet it is this basic idea of a community of scholars that is in clear and present danger.

THE ISSUE

Commencement: Room for Tradition and Dissent
Emphasis was on tradition during commencement weekend even as the senior class reflected the turmoil of the past year. Speakers — including the president, his predecessor J. Seelye Bixler, and U.S. Senator George S. McGovern — stressed what is best in academic and political tradition. Seniors elected a class speaker to reflect their concerns and sponsored a supplementary program devoted to world and national problems. Half the class chose not to wear caps and gowns, donating rental fees to Indochina war relief.

THE ISSUE

Democracy and the Press
In his address as Elijah Lovejoy Fellow, editor and publisher John S. Knight reflects on a diversity of matters-credibility, press "myopia," responsibility, objectivity, dissent, youth, involvement, and courage. In a newspaper era where personal leadership has faded Mr. Knight bucks the trend with a habit of saying, "Here I stand…" Summing up his beliefs in a speech to fellow publishers a few years ago he said, "There is no known substitute on the market for integrity and character, and no synthetic has ever been discovered for guts."

Past And Possible Future Preferences For 8-Mm And 16-Mm Projectors: First-Class School Districts Washington State, Milton E. Ruth

All Master's Theses

Educators recognize the contributions motion picture films make in the classroom learning situation. However, the problem of determining budget expenditures necessitates a continual evaluation of the utility of specific equipment. This study was an attempt to ascertain the past and future preferences for eight millimeter and sixteen millimeter motion picture projectors. For purposes of this investigation, the following null hypothesis was used: Given a hypothetical grant, there would be no significant difference in preference for purchasing eight millimeter motion picture projectors over sixteen millimeter motion picture projectors by first-class school districts in the state of Washington.

Team Teaching - Elementary And Secondary, Raymond L. Peterson Jr. Jan 1970

Team Teaching - Elementary And Secondary, Raymond L. Peterson Jr.

All Graduate Projects

With so many schools taking a serious look at teaming procedures, our educational system is becoming more open to new innovative programs, cooperative planning, and a variety of staff utilization possibilities. A first year teacher or teacher new to team teaching may find such a program too challenging unless a situation is provided to orient the prospective teacher into an open-concept, nongraded, or flexible building where team teaching is taking place.

This project was undertaken because beginning teachers usually do not receive sufficient indepth training for working in team teaching situations. It is the intent of the writer to:
