Playworld Translanguaging: A Place-Based Approach For Translanguaging Play Pedagogy In Early Childhood, Christine Robinson, Carly Steele, Toni Dobinson, Grace Oakley, Samina Manado, Katie Grace, Graeme Gower

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Conceptualised from a vision to honour children’s languages, agency and cultural ways of knowing, this research presents findings from a place-based translanguaging play pedagogy for early childhood called Playworld Translanguaging. In the remote Kimberley of Western Australia, researchers collaborated with educators in a Kindergarten/Primary/Yr 1 class of mostly Aboriginal children who have Bardi Jawi as their ancestral language, co-designing ways to revitalise this language through play pedagogy in ways intimately connected to place. Our Playworld Translanguaging approach reimagined Conceptual PlayWorlds (Fleer, 2018) with the intention of integrating pedagogical translanguaging. Following Indigenist research principles, critical participatory action research (CPAR) was the …

Re-Thinking Bodies In Cross-Border Physical Education Teacher Education Policies: A Posthuman Perspective, Valeria Varea, Erik Backman Jan 2026

Re-Thinking Bodies In Cross-Border Physical Education Teacher Education Policies: A Posthuman Perspective, Valeria Varea, Erik Backman

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

While posthumanist studies have increased in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE), traditional analytical approaches are still often employed for the analysis of policy documents, which limits the ways that we can understand policy work. The aim of this paper is to explore how bodies are conceptualised and assembled in PETE policies in one institution from Sweden and one from Australia using a posthumanist perspective. We understand these policies as material doings and enactments of the world that can allow us to think differently about PETE. By using the concepts of assemblage and plugging in, three result categories are presented: (1) …

Brilliant Little Things: Drama-Based Mindfulness To Support Pre-Service Teacher Wellbeing, Christina C. Gray, John O’Rourke

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Wellbeing is increasingly recognised as a critical concern in teacher education, yet pre-service teachers remain vulnerable to stress, burnout, and early attrition. This study examines Brilliant Little Things, an arts-based wellbeing initiative embedded within a drama education program. Using a phenomenological approach, the research draws on interviews, reflective journals, group chat posts, photographs, and artwork to explore how drama-based mindfulness practices can support the wellbeing of drama educators. Findings reveal how the production fostered reflection, connection, and emotional insight, offering a space for mindfulness and community. Narratives highlight the value of creative, relational pedagogies in strengthening resilience. This research contributes …

Feeling Giggity: Ambiguous Emojis In Teaching And Learning Communications, Mary Kynn, Nicole Reinke, Eva Hatje Jan 2026

Feeling Giggity: Ambiguous Emojis In Teaching And Learning Communications, Mary Kynn, Nicole Reinke, Eva Hatje

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

There is an increase in the number of digital platforms used in higher education classrooms that promote using emojis to capture students’ emotions. However, there is little evidence to suggest that interpretation of emojis is reliable in this context. This pilot project explored if emojis can reliably signify the emotions expressed by first-year university students. Students were asked to record their emotions by selecting a representative emoji and using free text to describe its meaning. A total of 72 responses were recorded in an anonymous online survey. Happy face emojis were used more frequently than emojis representing neutral or unpleasant …

Schools, Space And Atmospheres: The Value Of Student Videos In Negotiating Contested Spaces In New Urban Vertical Schools, Prue Miles, Kylie Boltin, Stuart Poyntz, Jill Willis

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Voices of young people are essential in civic discourse about thriving futures. Yet dialogue can be complicated when the experiences of adults and young people are vastly different, for example in school spaces designed by adults in cities designed for adults. Vertical, highrise inner city schools represent this intersection. A new genre of school in Australia, vertical schools symbolise aspirations for young people and livable cities as designed by adults. This paper draws from data collected in the Thriving in Vertical Schools project to explore the importance of affective learning atmospheres for students, and the value of digital stories to …

Digital Provision, Educators’ Attitudes And Use In Early Learning Settings: Ready To Implement The Eylf V2.0?, Lennie Barblett, Maria Enriquez Watt, Patricia R. Collins, Fiona Boylan, Pauline Roberts, Leesa Costello

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

An update of the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 emphasises the thoughtful, balanced and purposeful integration of digital technology in facilitating positive outcomes for children’s learning, development and wellbeing. In addition, educators are asked to support families with eSafety, yet it is unclear how educators are poised to respond to these changes. Within a post-positivist frame, 123 Australian early learning educators described their workplace digital provision, digital knowledge, skills, confidence and attitudes through a national online survey. Findings show that educators were confident about their own personal digital use, however their attitudes varied towards the use of digital technologies with …

When Brian Acted His Way Out Of A Wet Paper Bag: The Transformational Qualities Of Drama Education, Christina Gray, Robin Pascoe

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study utilised Mezirow’s Transformative Learning framework to explore drama teachers’ and pre-service drama teachers’ perceptions of transformation in the drama space. The research specifically examined three core questions: 1. Who are transformed? 2. What is transformed? 3. How does transformation happen? Adopting a phenomenological qualitative approach, we analysed interview data from eight drama teachers and 22 pre-service drama teachers in Western Australia. Findings indicate that participation in school-based drama activities fosters transformations (and perceptions of transformation) in self-confidence, personal values, and willingness to take creative risks. Beyond teaching performance skills, drama cultivates deeper understandings of self and others, offering …

Young People Healing And Growing In Trauma-Informed Positive Music Education, Jason Goopy

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Trauma-informed positive education (TIPE) is a recent approach that combines trauma-informed practices and strengths-based positive psychology. This study investigated how young people use music to heal and grow in a community music education programme informed by TIPE. A narrative inquiry was conducted at an Australian community music organisation supported by a global record label to offer a specialised programme developing music and life skills for youth experiencing adversity, such as mental illness, homelessness, abuse, and discrimination. Data were generated by participation and observation in programme sessions, and individual narrative share and tell interviews were conducted with three programme participants. Stories, …

The Power Of Role-Modelling: White Teacher Educators Normalising Anti-Racism And Cultural Reflexivity For White Pre-Service Teachers, Mary-Anne Macdonald, Sarah Booth, Helen Mills, Robert Somerville Jan 2026

The Power Of Role-Modelling: White Teacher Educators Normalising Anti-Racism And Cultural Reflexivity For White Pre-Service Teachers, Mary-Anne Macdonald, Sarah Booth, Helen Mills, Robert Somerville

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Every child has a right to feel culturally safe in schools, yet for countless Indigenous students this is not the case. Many White pre-service teachers in Australia enter initial teacher education with a limited understanding of racial identity, Indigenous knowledge or White anti-racism. This autoethnographic study applies Social Cognitive Theory and the Theory of Planned Behaviour to understand the role of the White teacher educator in racial conscientisation of White pre-service teachers. We examine how White teacher confidence in enacting anti-racist behaviours builds when White teacher educators role-model the professional approaches which White teachers can use to teach about race …

Leading Against The Odds: School Leadership In Under-Resourced Community Schools In Nepal, Shankar Dhakal, Chet Nath Panta Jan 2026

Leading Against The Odds: School Leadership In Under-Resourced Community Schools In Nepal, Shankar Dhakal, Chet Nath Panta

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Community schools in Nepal, particularly in remote areas, face persistent challenges in managing human, financial, and physical resources, which hinder educational quality and equity. Through a multiple case study design guided by Ecological Systems Theory, this research conducted semi-structured interviews with six headteachers from diverse geographical contexts, revealing critical issues including teacher shortages, financial instability, and inadequate infrastructure. Despite these barriers, headteachers demonstrate remarkable resilience through community engagement, strategic resource mobilization, and adaptive leadership strategies that paradoxically become more sophisticated under severe constraints. Positioning Nepal as a critical case for understanding educational leadership in resource-constrained environments globally, the study advances …

What Are Information Literacy Skills? Western Australian Primary Teachers’ Interpretations Of The Ict Curriculum, Louise Moroney, Vaille Dawson

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Teachers must equip students to navigate an increasingly complex world of unique challenges and opportunities, necessitating the development of a diverse range of transferable skills. These skills are embedded in the General Capabilities (GC) of the Australian school curriculum. Upper primary school teachers’ interpretations of one of the GC, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) learning progressions, was examined, as these skills have become increasingly important with the rise in generative and assistive artificial intelligence. Using an interpretivist paradigm, an exploratory study was used to determine the areas where 36 teachers differed in their interpretations of the learning progression. Data collected …

Parents’ Utilisation Of The Literacy-Based Text Message Program Kindytxt, Amanda Binns

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Text messaging programs have emerged as effective tools for enhancing parental engagement in children’s home-based literacy development, as substantiated by a growing body of research. This paper presents findings from a doctoral study that examined parental experiences and perceptions of a literacy-based text messaging program, with particular emphasis on how such initiatives inform and shape literacy practices in families with kindergarten-aged children. Rooted in the frameworks of social constructivism and interpretivism, the research privileges participants’ unique perspectives to explore the varied meanings parents construct around their use of the Kindytxt program. The study was theoretically informed by Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, …

Embodying Policy Work: An Exploration Of Contexts, Actions And Meanings Towards New Possibilities For Physical Education Teacher Education (Pete), Victoria Evans, David Aldous, Dawn Penney

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This theoretical paper presents a heuristic framework that is directed towards transformative thinking and practices in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE). The research focus and direction, embodying policy work, applies and extends Bernstein’s concepts of the pedagogic and corporeal device to offer new directions for inquiry and explore the considerations these raise for PETE professionals and their practices. The paper affirms the importance of policy work in PETE, while recognising a need for more nuanced and critical understandings of the complex interrelationships between contexts and actions, and the potential meanings generated and ascribed to different forms of policy work and …

A Figurational Analysis Of Health And/Or Physical Education Teacher Educators’ Conceptualisations Of Policy, And Their Sociogenesis, Laura Alfrey, Dylan Scanlon, David Aldous, Jenna Lorusso, Kellie Baker, Christopher Clark, Mo Jafar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Policy engagement is key to promoting quality physical education yet it has been identified as a ‘grand challenge’ for Health and/or Physical Education (H/PE) internationally. All H/PE professionals, including teacher educators, have a collective responsibility to engage with policy but existing research tells us little about how H/PE teacher educators (H/PETEs) understand and engage with policy. It is important to examine H/PETEs conceptualisations of policy for a few reasons, not least because teacher educators play a crucial role in supporting future generations of teachers who themselves will need to engage with policy as a core feature of their professional lives. …

Neofeudalism And Its Historical Unraveling. A Review Of Jodi Dean’S Capital’S Grave: Neofeudalism And The New Class Struggle (Verso Books, 2025), Jiang Lan

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

American Marxism political scholar Jodi Dean’s concept stands out from the numerous neofeudalism intellectual currents. In her early work, she proposed the concept of “communicative capitalism” as a more advanced form relative to traditional capitalism. However, in the development of her thought during the early 21st century, she demonstrated a trajectory from political critique to the critique of communicative political economy. Having become aware of the issue raised by McKenzie Wark in Capital is Dead concerning capitalism’s descent into an even more dire historical phase, Dean too perceives contemporary capitalism as potentially entering a state of decline, transitioning into a …

Organizing Identities: The Power Of Technofeudalism In A Precarious World – Milei, Youth Precarity, And Post-Partisan (“Anti-Everything”) Identities In Contemporary Argentina, Valeria Brusco Dec 2025

Organizing Identities: The Power Of Technofeudalism In A Precarious World – Milei, Youth Precarity, And Post-Partisan (“Anti-Everything”) Identities In Contemporary Argentina, Valeria Brusco

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This article explains why an anti-state radical-right agenda can become politically effective in contemporary Argentina by shifting the focus from ideology to the organization of identities. Drawing on survey evidence (ENCResPA, 7,130 online cases collected in 2022) and a corpus of anonymized semi-structured interviews with young people (2024–2025), I argue that Milei’s appeal is best understood as a form of negative politicization: a post-partisan stance built around rejection of mediation (parties, unions, experts, public institutions) and condensed moral narratives (“caste,” “cuts,” “freedom”). I identify an “Anti-Everything/Anti-Todo” identity as an electorally available and affectively intense orientation that travels efficiently …

The Present Interregnum: The Ultra-Right Revolution, María Pía Lara Dec 2025

The Present Interregnum: The Ultra-Right Revolution, María Pía Lara

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This paper deals with recent political consequences of presentism as conceptualized by the historian Francois Hartog. It clarifies how our experiences of time and history have enlarged the present and the past and have almost disappeared the future (except for catastrophic views). The consequences of these changes in the experiences reflect profound changes in expectations about the future, and how this regime of historicity allows people to become disoriented. They were moved into the margins of precarity. As a result, many of their views on politics find resonance redesigned by the distorted narratives of ultra-right leaders who blame those who …
