On The Trail Of The Decadent Polyglot, W. F. Hollander Jan 1970

On The Trail Of The Decadent Polyglot, W. F. Hollander

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

At the risk of beating a dead horse to death, I desire to add my lick. Students are not adequately trained to communicate in science, and the objective-type test is not helping. When linguistic fluency is equated with drooling in one's beard, and semantics is some sort of erotic deviation, one must not be surprised to learn that etymology is the study of incests. Most of the kids have become aware that mini means small, and that lunar means moon, and we should be grateful for such small advances, but the slippage in other areas is less cause for a …

Environmental Components Of Liberal Education, George G. Stern, Daniel Lago, Samuel D. Johnson Jan 1970

Environmental Components Of Liberal Education, George G. Stern, Daniel Lago, Samuel D. Johnson

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Panel 2 presented at the Association for General and Liberal Studies' Annual Meeting at Colgate University, October 30th through November 1st, 1969.

The elements of such a curriculum for man can be derived from the evidence of early childhood. Manual dexterity, social interaction, esthetic response, and linguistic capacity constitute four sources of spontaneous gratification in early life. If the student were taken as the integrating center of a curriculum composed of successively more complex forms of these four elements, permitting his own inductive capacities to lead him on from one level to the next, a form of education would emerge …

Team Teaching - Elementary And Secondary, Raymond L. Peterson Jr. Jan 1970

Team Teaching - Elementary And Secondary, Raymond L. Peterson Jr.

All Graduate Projects

With so many schools taking a serious look at teaming procedures, our educational system is becoming more open to new innovative programs, cooperative planning, and a variety of staff utilization possibilities. A first year teacher or teacher new to team teaching may find such a program too challenging unless a situation is provided to orient the prospective teacher into an open-concept, nongraded, or flexible building where team teaching is taking place.

This project was undertaken because beginning teachers usually do not receive sufficient indepth training for working in team teaching situations. It is the intent of the writer to:

Conditioning Expressive Language In A Nonverbal Child, Frederick R. Moll Jan 1970

Conditioning Expressive Language In A Nonverbal Child, Frederick R. Moll

All Master's Theses

The problem of treating the child with delayed speech acquisition has generated a considerable amount of research and these studies have pointed out the need for further work in this area. The purpose of this study is to test the procedures of one particularly effective study, that of Dr. Burl B. Gray at the Monterey Institute for Speech and Hearing in Monterey, California. By removing it from the clinical setting of the Institute, with its unusually well-trained and highly specialized staff, and by successfully employing its procedures using comparatively untrained personnel, it was felt that this program might be applied …

An Application Of A Revised Morrissett's Curriculum Analysis System To A High School English Program, Eldon Richard Loewe Jan 1970

An Application Of A Revised Morrissett's Curriculum Analysis System To A High School English Program, Eldon Richard Loewe

All Master's Theses

The problem presented in this thesis is threefold. Taken together, these items present the bulk of work for any person attempting curriculum evaluation at the local level:

1. Meaningful evaluative information must be obtained. Instead of glib and generalized assumptions about what ought to be, one should achieve specific information relevant to the researcher as well as his departmental colleagues.

2. The information must relate to other studies so that a larger curriculum analysis will result. If the soundest method of national evaluation is to create concrete building blocks locally, these individual studies must mesh to provide something larger and …

A Descriptive Study Of Certain Characteristics In Which The Language Of A Class Of Third Grade Negro Children Differs From Standard English, Columbus Nelson Sanders Jan 1970

A Descriptive Study Of Certain Characteristics In Which The Language Of A Class Of Third Grade Negro Children Differs From Standard English, Columbus Nelson Sanders

All Master's Theses

Children come to school speaking the language of their speech community. For some children, the language in their speech community is a variety of English that differs from standard English or what may be called "school English." These children may experience great difficulties in speaking standard English. This problem is one of social class dialect rather than regional language variation. The purpose of this study is to describe certain characteristics in which the language of a class of third grade Negro children differs from standard English.

The Relationship Of Reading Achievement And The Speech Problems Of Four Children Attendng C.W.S.C. Speech Clinic, Wanda Lee Raap Jan 1970

The Relationship Of Reading Achievement And The Speech Problems Of Four Children Attendng C.W.S.C. Speech Clinic, Wanda Lee Raap

This study attempts to find a relationship between speech problems and reading difficulties. This was accomplished by giving reading achievement and reading diagnostic tests to the children at the C.W.S.C. speech and hearing clinic. This study attempted to find the relationship between speech problems and reading difficulties using four children, their speech records and their reading tests.

In addition the writer devised a curriculum of activities for the migrant students, designed to upgrade their physical capabilities. Numerous empirical judgments were formulated in an effort to determine the relative effect of this curriculum as compared to: (1) resident students of the same age and/or grade and sex; (2) each migrant …
