Dispelling The Mystery About Comprehension: Kintsch's Model And Implications For Instruction, Donald J. Richgels Apr 1984

Dispelling The Mystery About Comprehension: Kintsch's Model And Implications For Instruction, Donald J. Richgels

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading comprehension can be described as the result of a successful interaction of a reader with a text. Schema theory and linguistic theory are valuable for what they have to say about the parties to that interaction. Both bodies of theory have influenced cognitive psychologists' descriptions of the mental processes involved in comprehension (cf. Richgels, 1982). A brief description of each will provide some "prior knowledge" to make understanding of Kintsch's model of comprehension easier.

A Comparative Study Of Second Grade Students On The Effects Of The Use Of Manipulative Aids On The Operational And Recall Skills In The Multiplication Of Three, Kell Brown Apr 1984

A Comparative Study Of Second Grade Students On The Effects Of The Use Of Manipulative Aids On The Operational And Recall Skills In The Multiplication Of Three, Kell Brown

Theses

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the operational and recall ability of second grade children, after instruction and the use of manipulative aids , to understand the multiplication of three. Multiplication of numbers at the early stages, in most mathematics programs, provides for rote memorization and drill instead of concept understanding. Most practices and drills require only answers to the facts, which provide little indication that a student can explain or show how that answer was obtained. Memorizing the multiplication facts is important, but at this early age the operation on those numbers to obtain an answer …

Perceptual Accuracy Of Affect Identification And The Relationship To Representational System And Personality Type, Richard Andrew O'Leary

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate accuracy of response to affectively laden stimuli across visual, auditory, and kinesthetic representational systems. This research was undertaken to assess subjects' individual response patterns and to distinguish possible differences in accuracy of response which subjects reported across representational systems. Subjects' response accuracy was correlated with their response frequency in subjects' representational systems. Subjects most accurate representational system was, in turn, compared to subjects' personality type. Subjects were assessed by two instruments, a modified version of the Affective Sensitivity Scale and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

Relevant literature was reviewed related to human information …

Preparing Communication Training Programs For Hospital Personnel, Nancy B. Poteete, Stephen A. Taylor

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Based on a hospital education and training program, this article describes how communication training can be designed for health care personnel in a complex institutional setting. It reviews the development of an education department, the identification of management and interpersonal skill needs, and the creation of regular courses, workshops, and special request training. The discussion emphasizes conditions distinctive to hospitals, including continuous staffing, rapid technological change, high message volume, medical terminology, personal liability, and the central importance of accurate oral communication in patient care. Defining The Field Of Communication, Erwin P. Bettinghaus Apr 1984

Defining The Field Of Communication, Erwin P. Bettinghaus

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article considers whether communication can or should be precisely defined as an academic field. It argues that meanings attached to communication change over time and that attempts to establish a single fixed definition are unlikely to resolve disciplinary uncertainty. Rather than limiting inquiry by excluding particular subjects, the article shifts attention to the role communication studies should play in higher education. It distinguishes between areas tied directly to professions or industries, such as journalism, advertising, theatre, and telecommunications, and areas focused on the production of knowledge about human communication, including interpersonal communication, rhetorical criticism, nonverbal behavior, and intercultural relations. …
