Sociolinguistic Perspectives On Decisions Of Correctness In New Mexico Spanish, Leslie Merryl Kravitz

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the attitudes of Spanish speakers of an Albuquerque community toward local and standard Mexican Spanish. The preferences expressed and the linguistic elements involved in such decisions were explored. Sociolinguistic factors related to individual and group choices were also considered.

In order to probe the relationship between social and linguistic facts, a single community was investigated. Martineztown, a small, insular Albuquerque Spanish-speaking community was first observed with regard to availability of formal models of Spanish. This paper is presented in two sections. The purpose of Part One is to explore the nature and role of translation in communication, and to dispell the narrow conception of it as a mechanical process of "synonym finding." Toward a deeper understanding of translation, the first part provides theoretical background on the hypothesis of "linguistic relativity"—the claim that each language uniquely shapes the thinking habits of its speakers to the extent that no culture can be faithfully mirrored by a different language. Just over one hundred years ago, the first public kindergarten was established in the United States. Historically kindergarten began as an all-day program. Half-day-kindergartens were developed because of the increase in the number of children and the shortages of teachers and classroom space (Oelrich, 1979). Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) was a Swiss educator who believed education should develop a child morally, physically, and intellectually. He felt that children learned best by using their own senses and by discovering things for themselves . Education Today: Manifestations of a Problem "Our nation is at risk," according to the National Commission on Excellence in Education.1 This report cites the following evidence, taken from a number of other studies, for the crises that exist in our schools today. 1. American students scored last on seven of nineteen academic tests comparing student achievement with other industrialized nations. 2. Compared to twenty-six years ago when Sputnik was launched, average high school student achievement on most standardized test scores has dropped. 3. Changing Perspectives On Context, Argiro L. Morgan

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of this article is to show how older, largely context-free models of reading and its instruction became changed into a multidimensional, context-dependent orientation toward written language and the reading process. This change was influenced by an identical trend in linguistics, which also shifted from an over-reliance upon isolated pieces of language to a stufy of naturalistic, connective texts (Kintsch, 1974). The article concludes with suggestions for using a variety of contextual strategies to increase reading comprehension.

Within the last decade, handicapped students were routinely excluded from public schools (Cintron, 1983). Federal and state law now guarantee these children a free, appropriate public education. It is the task of school administrators to develop programs and policy to insure the rights of handicapped children. The goal of this research is to present a legal perspective for the teaching of handicapped children in physical education and offer specific recommendations for the successful implementation of educational programs for the handicapped. The purpose of the study was to examine the social and cultural characteristics of successful and unsuccessful Mexican American community college students and compare them to successful and unsuccessful Anglo American community college students. Problem. In the United States, a uniquely American situation exists in that there appears to be no uniform or consistent comprehensive rationale underlying foreign-language study and proficiency requirements for doctoral degrees. As contrasted to students in other parts of the world, especially in Europe--where compulsory basic requirements are usually met by language studies in elementary through secondary school--most American graduate students are ill-prepared for foreign-language proficiency examinations on the doctoral level.

The Wentzville R-IV School District initiated a pilot program using the SUCCESS in Reading a nd Writing approach to teaching reading in the Fall of 1984. This study was conducted to compare the effects of the SUCCESS approach on the vocabulary , comprehension , attitudes , and behavior of the students participating in the pilot program to those who were taught in the Houghton-Mifflin basal reading program .
