Preferred Perceptual Learning Styles Of Chinese Students, Alex Albert Pia
Preferred Perceptual Learning Styles Of Chinese Students, Alex Albert Pia
Dissertations and Theses
The basis for this study was work done by Joy Reid (1987) of Colorado State University. Reid's work analyzed the pref erred perceptual learning styles of several groups of English as a Second Language students and one group of American students. The learning styles concept has been established on the theory that students have a particular mode through which they learn best. The learning styles analyzed in this study were: auditory, visual, kinesthetic, tactile, individual, and group. The objectives of this study were to determine the relationships that exist between the preferred perceptual learning styles of P.R.C. and American students …
The Use Of Efficient Information Systems For Information Acquisition By The Hearing Impaired: A Case Study, William L. Nicolay
The Use Of Efficient Information Systems For Information Acquisition By The Hearing Impaired: A Case Study, William L. Nicolay
Dissertations and Theses
This paper presents an exploratory case study focusing on the acquisition of information, through technologically efficient systems, by the hearing impaired. The multiple-case study was conducted during one school year with seven students participating.
While a central question and propositions derived from that question guide the data collection and analysis, this is a hypothesis-building study. The purpose of the study was to generate questions to focus further research of a descriptive or explanatory format.
One question, and the propositions generated by it, dominated this research: How do efficient acquisition systems in the classroom effect academic and social behavior, independent activities, …
Broken Dreams, False Promises, And The Decline Of Public Schooling, Peter Mclaren
Broken Dreams, False Promises, And The Decline Of Public Schooling, Peter Mclaren
Education Faculty Articles and Research
The thrust of the most prominent proposals for educational reform in the 1980s has been to make the schools more efficient at servicing the needs of the dominant social order. In the meantime, a backlog of neglected social problems has developed which points up the need for schools to develop the critical faculties of their students. In fact, a wide range of telling statistics on the socioeconomic aspects of American education show that the schools themselves are severely impacted by the inequalities present in the larger society- particularly along racial lines. The need for a critical pedagogy is acute.
Critical Pedagogy And The Postmodern Challenge: Toward A Critical Postmodernist Pedagogy Of Liberation, Peter Mclaren, Rhonda Hammer
Critical Pedagogy And The Postmodern Challenge: Toward A Critical Postmodernist Pedagogy Of Liberation, Peter Mclaren, Rhonda Hammer
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"Work within the field of critical pedagogy is currently being undertaken in the United States and Canada during what we consider a precipitous and precarious time. The present historical juncture may be singled out as a moment of particular urgency and importance for the future of democracy as we bear witness to two conflicting potentialities which manifest themselves in the struggle on an increasing worldwide basis between democratic forms of social life and those which can be labelled totalitarian and autocratic. A significant dimension of this crisis involves the politics of meaning and representation. We call attention to the present …

The Meaning(S) Of Lens Meaning, Michael Emme
The Meaning(S) Of Lens Meaning, Michael Emme
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
As a photographer and an art educator, I want to come to a better understanding of how lens images (photographs, film and television) convey meaning. This is not a trivial or purely academic concern. Recently media educator David Trend has observed that “media studies of any kind are virtually nonexistent in elementary and secondary schools. Yet serious studies of film, photography, and video are need most in these latter areas, as students encounter powerful mechanisms of socialization that will follow them the rest of their lives…Without a pedagogical imperative, the broader mission of progressive culture stands in jeopardy” (Trend, 1988, …
Dbae And Clae: Relevance For Minority And Multicultural Students, Barbara Boyer
Dbae And Clae: Relevance For Minority And Multicultural Students, Barbara Boyer
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The importance of art programming which reflects, and is responsive to the diverse needs of students in a multicultural society is examined. It is argued that the DBAE fails to consider the increasing diversity among the population of our schools in the prescription of standardized and achievement oriented curricula. It is further claimed that CLAE offers an alternative to DBAE which promotes sensitivity to the cultural make-up of our classrooms.

An Open Letter To Members Of The Caucus, Jan Jagodzinski
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In the last Caucus Newsletter, we announced the results of the poll about the name of the Bulletin of the Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education. Of thirteen responses received, ten supported the change from Bulletin to Journal. There were six votes against the introduction of an additional word and flavor into the title: two because they did not like the esoteric nature of the suggested word(s); two because they did not want a greater length to the title. One suggested reducing the name to the Bulletin/Journal on Social Theory and Art Education. Of the seven who voted favorably, …
A Study Of The Discriminative Function Of Six Variables In 9-12-Year-Old Males With Learning Disabilities, Kenneth M. Hanig
A Study Of The Discriminative Function Of Six Variables In 9-12-Year-Old Males With Learning Disabilities, Kenneth M. Hanig
Dissertations
Problem
Greater discriminative power to clarify the diagnostic category of learning disabilities is needed. Research identifies many types of learning disabled populations. Studies do not indicate that the six variables used in this project had been combined and used in a project prior to this. Using measures such as Sentence Repeat, Synonyms, Digits Forward/Backwards, Design Copy, Nonsense Words, and Visual Pattern Matching, this project studied the responses of an LD sample to these subtests and their ability to discriminate among a verbally impaired sample, a spatially impaired sample, and a control group.
Method
Six subtests were developed, which, according to …

What Is The Health Impact Of Day Care Attendance On Infants And Preschoolers?, Ruth L. Berkelman, Mary Guinan, Phen B. Thacker
School of Public Health Faculty Research
The impact of various child care arrangements on the health of infants and preschool children is not known in any systematic way, yet by 1990 more than 10 million of these children may be receiving their care in day care facilities (1). Concerns over the health of these children and health practices within day care facilities have already led some States to place regulation of day care facilities under the jurisdiction of the department of health (2,3), and others are presently considering such legislation. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently published "Health in Day Care," a manual …
Patterned And Predictable Materials In A Beginning Reading Program, Phyllis Boeding
Patterned And Predictable Materials In A Beginning Reading Program, Phyllis Boeding
Graduate Research Papers
Language is the means by which children come to understand the sense that others have made of the world as they seek to make sense of it themselves. Children need to interact with others through language in order to survive and to be fully functional in society. This involvement in the functions of language accounts for the natural acquisition of oral language. Young children are not sent to language school to be taught the rules of oral language, but rather, they interact freely with parents, siblings, and others. Through this interaction, young children begin to learn to use language for …
The Conflict Between Instruction That Characterizes Chapter 1 Programs And Instruction That Results From The Whole Language Philosophy, Barbara J. Sabin
The Conflict Between Instruction That Characterizes Chapter 1 Programs And Instruction That Results From The Whole Language Philosophy, Barbara J. Sabin
Graduate Research Papers
There is rising concern among Chapter 1 reading educators that instruction that occurs under Chapter 1 guidelines is often in conflict with what is known to be effective reading instruction. Current research and theory increasingly reveals that an instruction resulting from the whole language philosophy is effective in helping children learn reading and language skills. And yet, currently there are several characteristics of Chapter 1 programs that conflict with instruction based on the whole language philosophy. The purpose of this paper is to explore the conflict between instruction that characterizes Chapter 1 programs and instruction that results from the whole …
Culture And Communication In China, Wu Rui
Culture And Communication In China, Wu Rui
Graduate Research Papers
For half a century, a major change in China has been communication, the fundamental social process by which information is shared, sentiments are expressed, and human relations are maintained. Communication is not treated merely as a stimulus or as a change agent, that brings about effects in terms of specific individual response. Rather, communication is conceptualized as the basic social process, encompassing an intricate entirety of verbal or nonverbal stimulus and response, the patterns of which change dynamically and concomitantly with changes in the social structure.
The Necessity Of Separating Idealized Accountability From Realized Accountability: A Case Study, Karen Greenberg
The Necessity Of Separating Idealized Accountability From Realized Accountability: A Case Study, Karen Greenberg
Basic Communication Course Annual
This essay presents the hidden distinction between the idealized accountability and the realized accountability of the basic communication course. It illuminates this difference as this difference is evidenced in the ethical dimension of the rhetoric of basic communication course instructors'manuals. Contrary to popular myth, the basic communication course does not aim to reinforce the importance of the creation and maintenance of students' or instructors' identities, but aims to reinforce the importance of the creation and maintenance of educational systems. That is, this course mystifies one type of social hierarchy rather than elucidating many.

Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver
Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver
Graduate Research Papers
Although the brain functions as a whole unit with both sides being active, there are areas of specialization within the brain. Research indicates that the human brain is composed of two hemispheres, which are capable of functioning independently of one another. According to Michael Gazzaniga (1983), the left hemisphere is responsible for linear, symbolic, sequential and verbal thought. The right hemisphere is responsible for holistic, concrete, random and pictorial thoughts. The left can be compared to a computer while the right is more creative and intuitive. Individuals tend to develop a preference for using one side over the other, although …
Writing Process And Program For Second Grade, Lorene Knutson Geiselhart
Writing Process And Program For Second Grade, Lorene Knutson Geiselhart
Graduate Research Papers
Recently the research on children's involvement in the writing process has prompted educators to revise school programs to extend thinking-language abilities and to capitalize on the potential for personal-social development as children create meaning through writing (Murray, 1985; Graves, 1983). For this study, the writer reviewed the recent research on the development of children's composition abilities and then formulated an instructional project to facilitate writing in her second grade classroom.

The Evaluation Of Writing In Unit Curriculum English, David Sharp
The Evaluation Of Writing In Unit Curriculum English, David Sharp
Theses : Honours
The assessment and grading of writing in Unit Curriculum English plays a major role in the determination of a student's summative, and hence, public, letter grade. Through teachers' adherence to the assessment and grading procedures for writing in Unit curriculum English, the Ministry of Education lay claims on comparability and statewide standards. The claim warranted the investigation of the guidelines and procedures used. A review of literature on the evaluation of writing was conducted. In order that local application and relevance be possible, the holistic mode of evaluating writing was focused on. Problems were identified in the research concerning score …
The Aesthetic Perceptions And Preferences Of Young Children For Visual Artworks, Jacqueline Kik
The Aesthetic Perceptions And Preferences Of Young Children For Visual Artworks, Jacqueline Kik
Theses : Honours
Literature dealing with aesthetics and young children indicates the importance of developing in children a degree of aesthetic sensitivity and an ability to respond aesthetically to both natural and man made objects. However, directions for developing young children's aesthetic awareness appear to be hampered by the lack of systematic research evidence on the aesthetic response capabilities which five to eight year old children display. Thus, provision of information that would assist art educators and Early Childhood teachers in the preparation of successful classroom experiences remains a priority in this area. The research study reported in this thesis investigated the aesthetic …

The Relationship Between Language Development And Self-Concept In Selected Junior High School Students, Iwona Gradzka
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The study was designed to examine and define the relationship between language development and self-concept in junior high school students. Thirty students were selected on the basis of age. To measure language development and self-concept, the following instruments were employed: Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Revised, Verbal subtests (WISC-R, V); Verbal IQ; Draw-a-Person (D-A-P) Test; a teacher questionnaire; and observations of students. Correlations relied upon a simple and multiple regression. The statistical analysis was composed of two parts. The first part included simple regression to obtain a correlation coefficient between self-concept and verbal IQ. The second part included the Pearson …

A Description And Explanation Of Teacher-Talk During Kindergarten Sharing Time, Debra Louise Semm Elliott
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Teacher-talk during kindergarten Sharing Time was described and explained through a qualitative study of 3 kindergarten teachers. Transcripts of 12 teacher interviews and six Sharing Time observations formed the basis of the study. Results showed that there appears to be a mismatch between teachers' stated goals and actual practice. Teacher-talk dominated much of Sharing Time and occurred in a short discourse style. Categories of teacher-talk were developed through constant comparative analysis. Two broad categories of questions and comments were further divided. Questions fell into four categories: information-seeking, clarification, management, and off-topic. Information-seeking questions were further classified as low-level literal, high-level …
