The Relationship Between Revision Behaviors And Syntax In The Spoken Narratives Of Language-Impaired And Normally Developing School-Aged Children, Marilyn Cleckler
The Relationship Between Revision Behaviors And Syntax In The Spoken Narratives Of Language-Impaired And Normally Developing School-Aged Children, Marilyn Cleckler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The relationship between spontaneous revision behaviors and quantitatively measured syntax skills for language-impaired and normally developing school-aged children was investigated. Differences in revision behaviors and syntactic behaviors between the two groups of children and across three age levels were also examined. Narratives were obtained from 39 language-impaired and 39 normal-language children, aged 8 through 10 years. Correlations between spontaneous revision behavior scores and syntax scores were low to moderate. The revision behavior mean scores were not significantly different between the two groups of children. Mean syntax scores were higher for the NL children and did discriminate between LI and NL …
A Review Of Informal Measures Used To Assess Oral Syntactic Ability In Normal-Language And Language-Impaired, School-Aged Children, William Eric Strong
A Review Of Informal Measures Used To Assess Oral Syntactic Ability In Normal-Language And Language-Impaired, School-Aged Children, William Eric Strong
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This review of the literature was in investigation of informal measures used to assess syntax in normal-language and language-impaired, school-aged children. From the eighteen studies that were researched in this review of the literature, 86 measures and their variants were reviewed. Data concerning the T-unit, the most widely used measure for determining syntactic maturity was reviewed as well. Any findings uncovered regarding the syntactic skills of normal-language and/or language-impaired, school-aged children were summarized (typically on the basis of ability level, age or grade level, and sex). In addition, the strengths and weaknesses in previous studies of oral syntactic maturity in …
Classroom Modifications For Learning Disabled Adolescents: The Effects Of Inservice And Follow-Up Consultation On Four Regular Classroom Teachers, Lynne Chalmers
Theses and Dissertations
This study asked the question: What are the effects of an inservice on classroom modifications for secondary learning disabled students on the teaching practice of four highly able teachers? A secondary question asked was: To what extent are teachers‘ behavior and attitudes affected by follow-up consultation? The participants were four secondary regular classroom teachers representing four curricula areas (English, social studies, health, and biology). All four had been recognized as having the ability to work well with learning disabled students. The procedure used for the study was a form of naturalistic inquiry, specifically participant observation. All four teachers participated in …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Diversity in family patterns is a fact of life within our society, and schools can show awareness and understanding of this diversity without emphasizing value judgments. Stereotypical views of families with a single child and families with many children, for example, encourage antagonistic views about which pattern is "better."

Reading Instruction And The Language-Impaired Child: Means To What End?, Esther Feldman Levary
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This simple statement alludes to the important relationship between speech and literacy that has come to intrigue and perplex many in recent years. Speech and literacy have been recognized as two complex processes that are conceptually and practically intertwined in the great tangle called "language" (Snow, 1983; Vellutino, 1977; Mattingly, 1972). Language, "a system of communication that employs spoken or written symbols" (Harris and Sipay, 1984, p. 247), is defined as a single phenomenon having receptive and expressive modes.
Use Of Departmental Review As Part Of The Assessment Process, James H. Mcbath
Use Of Departmental Review As Part Of The Assessment Process, James H. Mcbath
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines departmental review as a central instrument in outcomes assessment for higher education communication programs. Situating the practice within escalating legislative accreditation and board level accountability, it traces common anxieties that reviews may prompt program closure or reconfiguration. Through case analysis, this article identifies pitfalls arising from unclear objectives, partial data, and uneven participation, and then articulates two guiding principles: evaluation must rest on transparent standards and on evidence grounded in disciplinary knowledge. The discussion links evaluation criteria curriculum adequacy faculty quality resource allocation and graduate performance, with attention to external audiences who often misunderstand communication studies. Concluding …

Communication Competency Assessment Of Non-Traditional Students, Judith K. Litterst
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article advocates prior learning assessment as a systematic avenue for validating communication competency among nontraditional undergraduates. It situates the rationale in demographic data showing the growth of adult learners and discusses the life centered orientation of adult education. The narrative details a flexible assessment model that distinguishes experiential learning from classroom instruction, specifies generic learning outcomes across public speaking interpersonal and small group contexts, and deploys multimethod evaluation including diagnostic interviews portfolios objective theory examinations and performance tests. Guidelines address faculty training screening procedures instrument reliability and articulation of credit waiver or advanced placement options. By integrating experiential validation …
Teacher And Student Discourse Variables In Academic Communication, Janet M. Sturm
Teacher And Student Discourse Variables In Academic Communication, Janet M. Sturm
Masters Theses
This study was designed to analyze the oral communication exchanges between first, third, and fifth grade teachers and their students. It was based on the hypothesis that discourse parameters of linguistic quantity and complexity and communication acts change over grade level, much as the discourse parameters of caregivers with young children have been found to do. The language of teachers and students in 15 classrooms was examined by measuring 6 form and quantity variables and 11 communication act variables. Results showed significant differences for some form variables (MLU, mazes, and Type-token ratio) and some communication acts (convey content, mark content, …

The Effect Of A Parent Training Program On Language Delayed Children, Lynn Krupa
The Effect Of A Parent Training Program On Language Delayed Children, Lynn Krupa
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this research project was to determine whether a child-centered parent training program requiring minimal training would increase the language skills of LD pre-school children who have normal receptive language. Seven experimental subjects and 6 control subjects were randomly selected from a pool of middle-class families who answered a newspaper advertisement. The parents of the experimental group received 3 individual training sessions over a 3-month period. They were instructed to spend 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week, for 3 months, in a free play situation with their children using the language stimulation techniques they had learned, …
