Increasing The Number Of Minority Elementary Students Found Eligible For Placement In A Gifted Program By Enhancing The Quality Of Screening Instruments And Inservice Training Provided To School Staff, Gale E. Kofsky

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum aimed to increase the number of minority elementary students in prekindergarten through Grade 5 found eligible for placement in a gifted program by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of screening instruments and by providing inservice training. The second goal was to increase the understanding of gifted characteristics and their relationship to eligibility by school staff.

Four hands-on inservice training sessions were utilized to familiarize teachers, counselors, and administrators in each of the targeted schools with a preselected group of norm referenced screening instruments and characteristics common to gifted minority and limited English proficient children. The practicum also developed …

This practicum addresses the need to improve the cultural proficiency of high school students studying French. The writer developed and implemented a twelve-week unit designed to teach the cultures of francophone countries to 20 randomly selected first-level students.

The writer developed and administered a survey and a pretest to determine the difficulty of students to demonstrate knowledge of and appreciation for French-speaking countries and people. Individual and group activities and a posttest measured the outcomes of the implementation.

Analysis of the evaluation data indicated an improvement in students’ level of cultural proficiency. They displayed an increase ability to recognize and …

An Evaluation Of The Procedures Used To Assess And Remediate The Perceived Writing Difficulties Of Undergraduate Students In The Faculty Of Education At Edith Cowan University, Les Puhl Jan 1992

An Evaluation Of The Procedures Used To Assess And Remediate The Perceived Writing Difficulties Of Undergraduate Students In The Faculty Of Education At Edith Cowan University, Les Puhl

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The standards of written literacy of teacher-education students at Edith Cowan University are perceived by many staff to be inadequate. The Faculty of Education's response to this perceived inadequacy is to carry out a mandatory skills-based remedial writing programme for students whose literacy competencies are judged to be deficient, The instrument used to assess the students' literacy competencies is the English Skills Assessment test. The students' performances in the various skills which the test purports to measure, also determine the area in which they are given remedial instruction if the results of the test suggest this is necessary. However, many …

Writing From The Margins: Geographies Of Identity, Pedagogy, And Power, Henry A. Giroux, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"The excess of language alerts us to the ways in which discourse is inextricably tied not just to the proliferation of meanings, but also to the production of individual and social identities over time within conditions of inequality. As a political issue, language operates as a site of struggle among different groups who for various reasons police its borders, meanings, and orderings. Pedagogically, language provides the self-definitions upon which people act, negotiate various subject positions, and undertake a process of naming and renaming the relations between themselves, others, and the world."

Deep-Seated Culture: Understanding Sitting, Karen T. Keifer-Boyd Jan 1992

Deep-Seated Culture: Understanding Sitting, Karen T. Keifer-Boyd

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Similar to the way that our culture influences how we interpret the world, the way that we sit in a chair and the type of chair that we are in positions what we see and how we are seen. Environmental cues communicate information through which we establish context and define a situation (Rapoport, 1982, p. 56). In this paper I examined the ways in which chairs (defined as that which is underneath us when "sitting") and sitting (defined as the infinite ways that we sustain our bodies in a bent position ranging from squatting, kneeling, reclining, or the lotus position) …

A Research And An Adaptation Of Methodologies To Develop Supplementary Materials And Activities For The Study Of Foreign Language, Melané Mildré

All Graduate Projects

The use of a typical textbook tor the instruction of the first year study of the Spanish language appears to be tedious as well as inadequate in its presentation of grammar drills, vocabulary selection, and its potential of allowing the student to develop fluency in the language. As a result, the writer researched a variety of methodologies currently being employed in the instruction of foreign language. Intending to improve upon the usage of a textbook as well as to add variety to the classroom procedure, the writer then developed or adapted supplementary materials to correlate to the textbook presently being …

Split- And Multiple-Images In Filmic Presentations: Concise Information Or Multiple Confusion?, Barbara J. Erickson Jan 1992

Split- And Multiple-Images In Filmic Presentations: Concise Information Or Multiple Confusion?, Barbara J. Erickson

Graduate Research Papers

Because there is more than one panel with moving pictures being viewed simultaneously, many questions can be posed about the audience's ability to process and interpret the multiple images, the construction of intended messages, and the appropriateness and ramifications of the use of this type of technique in moving visual mediums. The question central to this study will deal with analyzing the split/multiple moving image technique: How does the use and arrangement of multiple images or panels influence the viewer's interpretation of the message? Further, through a review of previous studies, an attempt also will be made to learn the …

Using The Writing Portfolio To Reflect Reading Progress At The First-Grade Level, Roberta Kay Hass Jan 1992

Using The Writing Portfolio To Reflect Reading Progress At The First-Grade Level, Roberta Kay Hass

Graduate Research Papers

Maintaining portfolios of students' writings has become a popular means of assessing both students' progress and program effectiveness in writing at the first-grade level. The strong relationship that exists between writing processes and reading processes indicates that writing portfolios may provide a productive source of information for a teacher in assessing first-grade students' progress in reading processes as well as in writing ability. The purpose of this literature review is to provide a background of information and a rationale that will support the use of writing portfolios to assess both writing and reading processes at the first grade level.

Recent Research On Appropriate Strategies To Facilitate And Enhance Reading Comprehension Instruction Primary Level, Linda Kennedy Jan 1992

Recent Research On Appropriate Strategies To Facilitate And Enhance Reading Comprehension Instruction Primary Level, Linda Kennedy

Graduate Research Papers

At a time when literacy is more important than ever, national attention has refocused on reading to insure that all children learn this critical skill. Through the years, the entire realm of reading has been considered extremely complex and even controversial. In no other area in the whole field of education is there more partisanship than in the area of the teaching of reading. Samuels and Farstrup (1992) stated that after years of having more educational research dedicated to the subject than to any other, there is still no precise answer resolving the question of how to teach a child …

Positive changes in attitudes toward writing were also reflected in the data collected as part of this study.

Extending The Literature Base Of A Language Arts Classroom Using The Theme Of Survival, Mary A. Rosburg Jan 1992

Extending The Literature Base Of A Language Arts Classroom Using The Theme Of Survival, Mary A. Rosburg

Graduate Research Papers

The general public in the United States recently has expressed much concern about low literacy levels. Many Americans have not developed language abilities that afford successful functioning as adults. Current data support this concern : Approximately one out of ten adults cannot read well enough to fill out tax forms, read a menu, or heed warning labels on medicine bottles. Surveys suggest that at least 50 percent of the unemployed lack basic reading and writing skills to secure a job (Cornett, Blankenship, 1990).

Reading In The Preschool, Mary C. Simons Jan 1992

Reading In The Preschool, Mary C. Simons

Graduate Research Papers

Reading is the process of getting meaning from, or making sense of print (Anderson, 1969; Thorne, 1988). As quoted in Gallasch (1982), Goodman said "The reader starts with a graphic display, printed or handwritten, and if he is successful, he ends with meaning, a reconstruction of the writer's message" (p. 19 ). The critical component in reading is comprehension (Bromley, 1988; Goodman, 1982; Thorne, 1988). It is not enough to recognize or name a word. "The task is to get the underlying structures, to get at the meaning, and to constantly keep the meaning in mind" (Goodman, 1971, p. 7).

A Program Teachers Can Establish To Help Persuade Parents To Read Frequently To Their Children, Maureen Gilhooley Walker Jan 1992

A Program Teachers Can Establish To Help Persuade Parents To Read Frequently To Their Children, Maureen Gilhooley Walker

Graduate Research Papers

The teaching of reading begins before formal schooling. It begins before age five and before nine o'clock in the morning (Clark 1976). It starts with the first story that is read to the child and builds from there. A problem occurs when parents do not see the role of reading to their children as vital, and thus do not read to them frequently. Teachers should not only read to their students, but also convince parents that "they stand at the center of their children's educational world" (Smith 1990). Reading to children is an important aspect of reading development and success. …

Value Of Reading Aloud To Children, Sandy K. Aronson Jan 1992

Value Of Reading Aloud To Children, Sandy K. Aronson

Graduate Research Papers

Guiding children into the world of quality literature is one of the greatest gifts parents and teachers can give to their children. Enjoyment of a piece is the first purpose of literature. Literature develops imagination, offers vicarious experiences, and develops insight into human behavior. Through quality literature, one can respond to the universality of human conflict. Literature can constitute a curricular base as it provides models of language and exposure to the meanings provided by the various genres and offers natural connections between the comprehension/composition processes (Huck, Hepler, & Hickman, 1987).

Voice Technologies In Advanced Computer Systems, Jodie M. Cone Jan 1992

Voice Technologies In Advanced Computer Systems, Jodie M. Cone

Graduate Research Papers

Recently there has been a surge of interest using voice technologies in advanced workstations. The motivation for voice is its role as the primary channel of human-to-human communication, which ties in with current research in which computers are used to facilitate group problem solving, in enhanced user interfaces, and office computing. Taken broadly, the use of speech as a command and data channel may require digital recording and playback techniques, speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, and telephone interface equipment. The big payoff will be to build systems, using these technologies, to allow computers to become a part of the infrastructure of …

Spelling And Whole Language, Rosemary C. Geiken Jan 1992

Spelling And Whole Language, Rosemary C. Geiken

Graduate Research Papers

A current trend in language arts programs in elementary schools is the shift from skills-based instruction to a focus on emergent literacy and whole language (Watson, 1988). Teachers are setting aside textbooks and are involving children in language activities that are functional and purposeful to them (Goodman, 1986). Nowhere is this instructional trend more obvious than in the area of writing. It is viewed as a recursive process in creating meaning (Graves & Stuart, 1985; Calkins, 1986).
