Addressing The Impact Of Deportation On Citizen Children And Their Undocumented Parents, Ismael Mondragon May 2016

Addressing The Impact Of Deportation On Citizen Children And Their Undocumented Parents, Ismael Mondragon

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

A vast number of parents/children are been affected with high levels of anxiety, depression, and stress when their families are been separated due to deportation. Therefore, I conducted two sets of interviews, a parent component that consisted of eight questions and a child component that consisted of eleven questions. The interviews took approximately 10 minutes each. I interview a small group of six participants, three adults and three children who have gone through the devastated experience of having a family member deported. Hearing the participants experiences I learned that there are not enough programs in the community to help families …

Internationalization In American Legal Education: A Short-Term Embedded Study Abroad Program For University Of Connecticut Law Students, Yana Kraychinskaya May 2016

Internationalization In American Legal Education: A Short-Term Embedded Study Abroad Program For University Of Connecticut Law Students, Yana Kraychinskaya

Capstone Collection

It has been noted by many legal education professionals that, although legal education in the U.S. is good at development of analytical skills through its case system, it still lags behind in the development of professional integrity and ethical values. Due to an increase in globalization in most areas of American life, even if students do not choose to work in international companies and organizations, their work will require communicating in an intercultural setting. It is no longer enough for law school graduates to just be able to solve problems effectively. They need to be effective at communicating with people …

Case Study: Provider For Program To Prevent The Revictimization Of Persons Trafficked For Sex, Janis G. Arlow

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This case study seeks to identify behavior, skills, and attitudes of a professional providing an effective reintegration program for persons trafficked for sex. New demands on medical and social services were created over the past two decades by legislative changes. Initial research focuses on rescue and unmet primary needs. The service program selected for this study has stepped beyond awareness and rescue efforts to the rehabilitation and prevention of revictimization of trafficked persons. A literature review covers the history of sex trafficking in the United States; the recovery environment; materials, trainings and programs available for professionals seeking knowledge to serve …

Historical Narrative Of A Veteran Service Network Implemented By The Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University, Daniel Piston May 2016

Historical Narrative Of A Veteran Service Network Implemented By The Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University, Daniel Piston

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The purpose of this project was to author a historical narrative of a community engagement program, AmericaServes, implemented by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families. AmericaServes aids veterans, service members, and their families in navigating through the maze of non-profit and public services offered to them. This program uses a model called Collective Impact (Kania & Kramer, Collective Impact, 2011) as its fundamental principal. Since its inception, there has not yet been a proper record chronicling the history of program, the key players involved, and lessons learned from challenges faced during each stage of its evolution.

To conduct this …

An Examination Of The Community School Model In An Urban School Setting, Tanna H. Nicely May 2016

An Examination Of The Community School Model In An Urban School Setting, Tanna H. Nicely

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The topic of educating today’s youth has become an increasing multi-faceted task with rigorous accountability metrics handed down from all of the different branches of government. Schools are faced with providing more than just instructing the three R’s; they are taxed with educating the whole child.

This qualitative study explored the community schools model in an urban elementary school. Specifically, the study attempted to understand the perceived impact this model has on community members, parents, and administrators at one particular elementary school. Data were collected through a series of open-ended interviews and coded for inductive analysis. There were four emerging …

Recommendations And Resources For Evaluating Community School Programs, Janet C. Fairman Ph.D., Amy F. Johnson Phd Apr 2016

Recommendations And Resources For Evaluating Community School Programs, Janet C. Fairman Ph.D., Amy F. Johnson Phd

School Improvement

The legislative definition of “community schools” is intentionally broad and anticipates the possibility that community schools might vary significantly in their locally-developed goals and intervention programs. The needs of students and their families may vary by community, as does the array of existing resources available in the surrounding area. This leads to a broad set of possible strategies that may imply different expected outcomes and evaluation processes.

The grant program requires pilot schools to meet certain application criteria. Applications require schools to submit an audit or needs assessment, a community resources assessment, an outline of plans and goals based on …

D.R.I.V.E.N. School System: A Reformed Education Model, Shelby Click Mar 2016

D.R.I.V.E.N. School System: A Reformed Education Model, Shelby Click

Undergraduate Research Conference

We believe there is a lack of an individualized and effective learning experience in the majority of education systems in the status quo. This leads to a disdain for everyday school life, indecisiveness in selecting a field of study post-high school, and the absence of passion for attaining knowledge that extends throughout a lifetime. After conducting research regarding alternative teaching methods and school structures through this joint project, we have developed D.R.I.V.E.N. School System. In 5th grade, we will test students for emerging qualities that indicate they will excel in a certain area. Their education in our schooling system will …

Towards Collaboration Between Lawyers And Social Workers: A Content Analysis Of Joint Degree Programs, Ifem E. Orji Feb 2016

Towards Collaboration Between Lawyers And Social Workers: A Content Analysis Of Joint Degree Programs, Ifem E. Orji

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Collaboration is a central issue in the interdisciplinary education of social work and law students. Joint JD/MSW degrees have the potential to promote collaboration between practitioners of law and social work in areas where their practices converge. The 1969 recommendations by the National Conference of Lawyers and Social Workers (NCLSW) to establish these joint degree programs assumed that collaborative learning would occur within them. However, prior research has not investigated whether or not this occurs. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine whether evidence of the intent to promote collaboration was present in written materials associated with joint degree …

Oh What A Tangled Web We Weave: Mind Mapping As Creative Spark To Optimize Transactional Clinic Assignments, Brett C. Stohs Jan 2016

Oh What A Tangled Web We Weave: Mind Mapping As Creative Spark To Optimize Transactional Clinic Assignments, Brett C. Stohs

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Client assignments are among the most important factors that affect a student's experience in a live-client transactional law clinic. Student "attorneys" are presented with meaningful opportunities to engage with and learn from clients by applying their still-developing professional bona fides to real people with legal challenges. As a result, decisions regarding allocation and distribution of client matters are among the most important pedagogical decisions transactional clinical faculty make. By taking into account the unique and sometimes complex individual characteristics of each client and student, clinical faculty can optimize these allocations and maximize achievement of important objectives. Mind mapping can help …

The Arizona Kith And Kin Project Evaluation, Brief #4, Eva Marie Shivers, Charles Yang, Flora Farago

Faculty Publications

Despite the prevalence of family, friend, and neighbor (FFN) child care (NSECE, 2015), relatively little is known about the characteristics of this type of care, quality of care, and the features of effective quality improvement initiatives for FFN care providers. In general, the early childhood field has remained relatively silent about FFN child care in policy and research discourses surrounding child well-being and quality initiatives (Shivers, 2012; Whitebook et al., 2004). The overall goal of the analyses described in this brief, Brief #4 in a series of four, was to explore and analyze FFN providers’ awareness and use of community …
