Seir Model Of Seasonal Epidemic Diseases Using Ham, Nirmala P. Ratchagar, S. P. Subramanian Dec 2015

Seir Model Of Seasonal Epidemic Diseases Using Ham, Nirmala P. Ratchagar, S. P. Subramanian

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

SEIR mathematical model of childhood diseases measles, chickenpox, mumps, rubella incorporate seasonal variation in contact rates due to the increased mixing during school terms compared to school holidays. Driven by seasonality these diseases are characterized by annual oscillations with variable contact rate which is a periodic function of time in years. Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) is considered in this paper to obtain a semi analytic approximate solution of non-linear simultaneous differential equations. Mathematica is used to carry out the computations. Results established through graphs show the validity and potential of HAM for amplitude of variation greater than zero. Also, when …

An Evidence Based Approach To Sepsis: Educational Program, Dolores Perez Dec 2015

An Evidence Based Approach To Sepsis: Educational Program, Dolores Perez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Evidence-based guidelines for recognizing and treating sepsis have been available for decades, yet healthcare providers do not adhere to the recommendations. Sepsis can progress rapidly if not recognized early. Literature reports reveal that sepsis is the leading cause of death in non-cardiac intensive care units (ICUs), and it is one of the most expensive conditions to treat. A hospital in the Las Vegas, Nevada area had previously introduced sepsis management prescriptions in 2011 with no formal education of sepsis guidelines to nurses. The original hospital’s sepsis management prescription sets followed guidelines dated 2008. The purpose of this project was to …

Institutional Factors Influencing African-American Male Involvement In Undergraduate Student Organizations, John Mark Davenport Oct 2015

Institutional Factors Influencing African-American Male Involvement In Undergraduate Student Organizations, John Mark Davenport

Theses and Dissertations

Students attending colleges and universities who have purposeful opportunities to interact with peers and faculty about educational matters and who are challenged with consistent encouragement report higher levels of satisfaction with their collegiate experience and have higher persistence rates than students who do not receive these opportunities (Kuh et al., 1991; Pascarella & Terenzini, 1991; Schroeder & Mable, 1994). In higher education, African-American males are neither retained from admission through graduation at a rate comparable to majority students nor African-American women (AASCU, 1988; ACE, 2008; Harper, 2012). In this study I set out to determine which institutional factors influence African-American …

Assessing Injury Prevention And Intervention Protocols For High Schools Within The Gateway Athletic Conference, Michael Zacheis

Dissertations

This study was the result of a quantitative methods research design, which assessed: athletic training services, injury prevention at the time of the study, and intervention protocols for high schools within the Gateway Athletic Conference (GAC). This study explored the impact of injuries and concussions on student athletes. The study also examined the types of athletic training facilities, resources for rehabilitation, and procedures for athletic training programs available at the high school level in the GAC. The study uncovered some significant findings between the groups who were surveyed. The participants surveyed represented athletic trainers, athletic directors, and coaches. There were …

Learning Opportunities 2015/2016, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Course Catalogs

The graduation requirements of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy are in concert with those maintained by the State of Illinois with additional requirements as established by the IMSA Board of Trustees. Each semester students must take a minimum of 5 academic courses (2.5 credits) for a grade (not Pass/Fail). Fine Arts, Wellness, and Independent Study courses, or any course taken on a Pass/Fail basis do not count towards the 5 course (2.5 credits) minimum. Most students will take between 5 (2.5 credits) and 7 (3.5 credits) academic courses per semester. Only courses taken for a letter grade will count …

A Survey Of Mathematical Models Of Dengue Fever, James P. Braselton, Iurii Bakach Aug 2015

A Survey Of Mathematical Models Of Dengue Fever, James P. Braselton, Iurii Bakach

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we compare and contrast five models of dengue fever, a serious illness that affects tropical and subtropical areas around the world. We evaluate each model using different scenarios and identify the strengths and weakness of each of the models. The goal of our analysis is to indicate the strengths and weaknesses of current mathematical models of dengue fever that should assist future researchers in forming models that accurately measure the variables they are studying that affect the spread and progression of the disease.

What Every Primary Care Clinician Should Know About The Diagnosis Of Lyme Disease, Elizabeth Maloney Aug 2015

What Every Primary Care Clinician Should Know About The Diagnosis Of Lyme Disease, Elizabeth Maloney

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

A great deal of misunderstanding, even in the medical profession, exists concerning Lyme disease. Dr. Maloney’s article provides an in-depth discussion of the illness. It was written with physicians in mind but is not so heavily laden with medical terminology that the layperson will fail to understand its contents.

Lyme Testimonials, Taproot Editors Aug 2015

Lyme Testimonials, Taproot Editors

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Most people (estimates suggest about 80%) who become infected with Lyme disease recover after a month or two of antibiotic treatment. However, there are many individuals who suffer long bouts of chronic Lyme disease. One only has to google “Lyme testimonials”…to find hundreds of stories, written and video format, regarding the devastating effects of Lyme disease. Some share how victims continue to suffer and others describe how certain treatments either improved or restored their health. It is important to note that a person is never totally cured, as victims of Lyme disease are always subject to relapse.

A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of Employee Attitudes, Awareness, And Satisfaction With Regard To The University Employee Wellness Program, Linda Ann Walters Aug 2015

A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of Employee Attitudes, Awareness, And Satisfaction With Regard To The University Employee Wellness Program, Linda Ann Walters

Dissertations

While there was an abundant amount of research supporting the need for and benefits of a workplace health program (WHP), little empirical research existed regarding WHPs in a university setting (Watts, 1992). Compared to other WHP settings, the university setting is unique in that the employee population consists of both faculty and staff, with various work schedules, job responsibilities, and demographics. Universities also provide a unique setting for WHPs due to their access to various internal resources, such as employees with expert knowledge, campus food services, on-site facilities, and students studying health and wellness disciplines (RAND Corporation, 2013). As reported …

Quantitative Reasoning: Interdisciplinary Stem 21st Century Reasoning Modality, Robert L. Mayes Jul 2015

Quantitative Reasoning: Interdisciplinary Stem 21st Century Reasoning Modality, Robert L. Mayes

Teaching & Learning: Faculty Presentations (2012-2017)

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS 2013) and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (NGA 2010) call for improving scientific, engineering, and mathematical practices. Among the practices called for are model-based reasoning which engages students in developing and using models, analyzing and interpreting data, and using mathematics and computational thinking. Fundamental to these processes is quantitative reasoning (QR), which for this project is defined as:

Quantitative reasoning is mathematics and statistics applied in real-life, authentic situations that impact an individual’s life as a constructive, concerned, and reflective citizen (Mayes et al. 2014b).

In the NSF project, Culturally Relevant Ecology, …
