The Approach Of An Iowa School District To Program Reorganization, Bruce Lee Tepfer

Graduate Research Papers

The growth and development of public education in this country has been documented in scores of textbooks and countless other publications. Such accounts often focus on the external forces in society to which the schools have responded. Those accounts have understandably not often focused on the growth and development of individual school systems. When school systems have been singled out for a special study, they have usually been large urban systems or systems on the "cutting edge" of educational innovation or reform.

Graphing As A Reading Skill, Don Deresz, Grover C. Mattewson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The science curriculum contains built-in opportunities for the teaching of reading skills. Using graphs is a skill that is necessary for children to gain information from their reading (Silvarcli and Wheelock, 1980). Science instruction can guide children to comprehend information from their reading by teaching them to read and infer from graphs. Lucas and Burlando (1975) stated that scientific experiences "are designed so that the student will be asked to define problems, locate information, organize data into graphic form, evaluate findings and draw conclusions.

The Effectiveness Of Intensive Phonics, Gwen Fulwiler, Patrick Groff Oct 1980

The Effectiveness Of Intensive Phonics, Gwen Fulwiler, Patrick Groff

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

An examination of the history of reading instruction reveals that there has been a long-standing controversy over the effectiveness of the teaching of phonics. It is readily apparent from such an historical study that the enthusiasm for phonics as an effective methodology by the experts in reading instruction has waxed and waned over the years (Matthews, 1966). Only in relatively recent times, however, have carefully controlled and analytical reviews been made of the total of the respectable research evidence that deals with this issue.
