Last Year Science Bulletin Made Its Appearance Sep 1929

Last Year Science Bulletin Made Its Appearance

Science Bulletin

Last year Science Bulletin made its appearance. Your response was such that we feel encouraged to continue, and after one year's experience we should be able to make the bulletin more of a real service bulletin to the teachers in the field. We invite your suggestions and criticisms. While we all like commendations, yet we realize that unfavorable criticism is sometimes most helpful. Let us have your "brickbats" as well as your "bouquets."

The Use Of The Football Squad As Laboratory Material For Physiology, H. Earl Rath Sep 1929

The Use Of The Football Squad As Laboratory Material For Physiology, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

As school is getting under way for the new school year, the teacher of physiology or hygiene is probably busily engaged in looking over the laboratory equipment to see what can be found to demonstrate the functioning of the human body. In all probability many instructors will decide that there is not enough material on hand to justify an attempt at demonstrations, while regular laboratory work will be considered out of the question.

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott Sep 1929

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

Mrs. Jiggs, in the cartoon, "Bringing up Father," frequently calls her husband an insect. This is a flagrant misuse of the term as an insect never has fewer nor more than six legs. It may be wingless as are the bedbugs, two winged as are all flies, or four winged as the grasshoppers, but no normal insect ever has more or less than six legs and by this one positive character you may know them.

The Nature Of Method, Emma H. Mater Aug 1929

The Nature Of Method, Emma H. Mater

Bachelors’ Theses

The child, the learner, as the center of interest around which the materials of development group themselves, is a primary concept of the new school. Experience, is the keynote. According to Rugg & Shumaker (1), the aims of the new education are two-fold, maximum growth in creative self-expression on one hand, and tolerant understanding of self and of society on the other. Freedom, pupil initiative, the active school, with the essential element of child interest, are the articles of faith of the new educational program. Experience, the complete integrated life of the individual, must go on in a thoroughly integrated …

Cooperation Between The Home And The School In The Matter Of Hygiene Of Children, Theodore C. Klett Jun 1929

Cooperation Between The Home And The School In The Matter Of Hygiene Of Children, Theodore C. Klett

Bachelors’ Theses

In attempting to improve the health habits of the child, little can be accomplished without the interest and cooperation of the home, in which the habits will be practiced. The establishment of an intimate understanding between the school and home goes far towards producing the desired results; and, again, while we may be making. progress by the mere preaching of the gospel of hygiene to the child, the child cannot reform his own ways and revolutionize family traditions without the cooperation of the parents. Important from every point ·of view has been the taking of the parents into the confidence …

Safety Education In The Elementary School, Julia Alice Sheehan Jun 1929

Safety Education In The Elementary School, Julia Alice Sheehan

Bachelors’ Theses

In modern civilization we find numerous and varied hazards, without a sufficient knowledge to combat the startling increase of accidents caused by these hazards. In the United States six per cent to the deaths are due to carelessness. The number of American soldiers, who made the supreme sacrifice in Europe during the nineteen months that our country was in the World War, was 77,118. Statistics of the United States Census Bureau show, in the death registration area of the United States during the twelve months of the year 1920, the number of violent deaths, exclusive of suicide, was 68,697. According …

The Nervous Child, Miriam Wolfson Jun 1929

The Nervous Child, Miriam Wolfson

Bachelors’ Theses

Nervousness is not, as it is commonly thought, a disease of the nerves from the physical point of view. It is rather a functional disorder affecting the patient as a whole, especially mentally. Nervousness may be described as an excessive activity of the nervous system, resulting in a peculiar type of response to the ordinary stimuli of life and showing itself in such symptoms as over activity, temper, irritability or restlessness.

Education Through Recreation, Marjory C. Wolf Jun 1929

Education Through Recreation, Marjory C. Wolf

Bachelors’ Theses

"All work and no play will make Jack a dull boy." Educators throughout the world to-day are beginning to realize the significance of said words. Shorter working hours, and the demand for mechanical power and devices, is increasing leisure very rapidly. It is just as necessary to prepare for the leisure time of life as it is for the work time of life, and what the great mass of people will do during their leisure time is the problem we are concerned with. When not at work one must choose between play and idleness - and Carlyle says, "Nine-tenths of …

Health Work In The Elementary And Grammar Grades And Its Motivation, Alice Thies Jun 1929

Health Work In The Elementary And Grammar Grades And Its Motivation, Alice Thies

Bachelors’ Theses

If we examine a school curriculum made a half century ago, we shall find that the course in health instruction at that time consisted of lessons on bodily structure. Upon examination of later curricula, we shall find a gradual change in content to that of health instruction. Within the last few years, added knowledge concerning nutrition and growth, physical defects with their causes and results, and mental hygiene, has led to the realization that there must be new objectives and principles for the course in school hygiene. By referring to recent books, magazines, and addresses on this subject, I have …

The Teaching Of English In The Junior High School, Louise Knowlton Jun 1929

The Teaching Of English In The Junior High School, Louise Knowlton

Bachelors’ Theses

The study of the English lenguege and its literature occupies a unique position among the studies of the secondary school--a position supported by universal recognition for its importance to all pupils. No other subject can compare with it in the amount of attention afforded throughout the secondary-school course or in the extent to which it meets the needs of all pupils. The importance of the study of the mother tongue and its literature seems to be quite generally recognized. It requires a careful analysis and interpretation of its special values and purposes. It is only when these are properly conceived …
