The Magnetic Effect Of An Electric Current, L. Begeman
The Magnetic Effect Of An Electric Current, L. Begeman
Science Bulletin
From a practical point of view, the magnetic property of an electric current is of great value to man. It is this property that is utilized in the dynamo for the generation of large currents of electricity. It is also this property that enables man to utilize the driving power of the electric motor in the manufacturing industries.
Stimulants, H. Earl Rath
Stimulants, H. Earl Rath
Science Bulletin
The state law requires the teaching of the effects of narcotics and stimulants. Most teachers would be glad to comply with the law if they were certain that they could present reliable information. The difficulty in the past has been that most of this information available was merely propaganda and not based on scientific fact. The tobacco companies have always been able to secure statements from people of prominence who were tobacco users to the effect that tobacco not only did them no harm but actually proved of value. Their statements were not based on scientific evidence, and many of …
Character Training In Education, Margaret Mary Quinn
Character Training In Education, Margaret Mary Quinn
Bachelors’ Theses
There is no more significant trend in current education than the nationwide movement of character training. Interestingly enough, this trend has developed alongside of the scientific movement in education, though much more recently. The scientific trend that has characterized education during the present century, has sought to reduce it to a precise and controlled process through the utilization of the findings and techniques of the psychological and social sciences. Increasingly research and experimentation are yielding valid techniques for carrying on the various processes of education. But with the increasing number and refinements of techniques there has been of late a …

A Course Of Study In Handwriting, Magdalene Joan Guequierre
A Course Of Study In Handwriting, Magdalene Joan Guequierre
Bachelors’ Theses
The objective in which we as teachers should be interested is the acquisition by the children of a plain, useful and legible handwriting, gracefully executed. Like all subjects, handwriting demands a certain amount of Intensive, progressive training and repetition before it can become automatized. The time for automatization of writing is during the handwriting period.
The Use Of Marionettes As A Project In The Elementary Schools, Elizabeth M. Grady
The Use Of Marionettes As A Project In The Elementary Schools, Elizabeth M. Grady
Bachelors’ Theses
A few years ago we associated the marionette entirely with the Italian showman. Now a veritable renaissance of interest in marionettes seems to be sweeping over every country, our own included. Many artists were quick to see the educational as well as enjoyment possibilities in this fascinating form of drama. The result has been that in almost every city and town some sort of work with marionettes is being done in the public, private and parochial schools from the primary grades to high school.
The Education Of The Retarded Pupil, Rose M. Murphy
The Education Of The Retarded Pupil, Rose M. Murphy
Bachelors’ Theses
The retarded pupil that will be considered is the normal child whose mental age and achievement score are below the standards accepted for a child of his chronological age. The school must provide for this type of child now, more than formerly, due to the increased period of attendance required, and changed economic conditions. Regarding this matter Ryan and Crecelius’ state the following:
"Until recently secondary education has concerned itself very little with ’the masses’. in this country the original purpose of the secondary school was to provide selected youths with the training prerequisite for theological study."

Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Clara S. Mueller
Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Clara S. Mueller
Bachelors’ Theses
Extra-Curriculum Activities occupy a place in every junior high school. The widespread interest in extra-curriculum activities has led to the study of various phases of the problem.
The apparent need for something to satisfy pupils with abilities unsuited to the prescribed traditional curriculum, turned my interest especially toward extra-curriculum activities since such a program can at least in a measure make adjustment for the individual differences in our students. The desire for further information as to the values, the place demanded, and the time allotted to extra-curriculum activities in our schools were motives which stimulated me to reading and study …
Contributions Of Reading To Some Of The Other Content Subjects Particularly In The Sixth And Seventh Grades, Marion E. Theisen
Contributions Of Reading To Some Of The Other Content Subjects Particularly In The Sixth And Seventh Grades, Marion E. Theisen
Bachelors’ Theses
My purpose in this thesis is to show the contributions of reading to some or the other content subjects, particularly in the sixth and seventh grades. To so do it, I have consulted the leading authorities on both reading and study in order to make a complete survey of the material written on these subjects. I have recorded the main ideas of these authorities, and in most cases giving their direct quotations. In order to present the subject, it was necessary to particularly understand the nature of study, the objectives of reading, the relationship between study and reading, and the …

Speech Training In The Elementary Schools, Adell M. Schott
Speech Training In The Elementary Schools, Adell M. Schott
Bachelors’ Theses
One of the strongest impulses of the human heart is self-expression, the most important medium of which is spoken English. The fact that more attention and interest are directed at the perfection of written. English cannot be refuted when an intelligent investigation is made into the progress of spoken English. By spoken English, I mean the general training of the voice for speech.
Juvenile Delinquency And Education, Mary J. Carrigan
Juvenile Delinquency And Education, Mary J. Carrigan
Bachelors’ Theses
The problem of juvenile delinquency is as old as humanity. Ever since there have been children there has been the problem of their misdemeanors and punishment. In the beginning the treatment of the problem was relatively simple since it was purely a family affair and entirely under the jurisdiction of the father as the head of the family. As civilization became more complex so did the problem of delinquency. The factors which caused it increased in number and importance, bringing about greater complexity in its punishment and treatment. At first little or no attention was given to any means of …
The Value Of Music In The Elementary Grades, Anna M. Fox
The Value Of Music In The Elementary Grades, Anna M. Fox
Bachelors’ Theses
Why do same people smile and look blank at the mention of the study of art? Why do they look at art teachers as though they were in a class by themselves, as though they must be a queer lot? There 'is nothing unusual, nothing aristocratic about art, because art is life itself. If it is not a live thing it has failed to be art. Think of' the works of art in music, painting, and sculpture that have lived on down through the ages, and will continue to live on and on. A great man once said, "That all …

Extra-Curriculum Activities In Senior High Schools, Julia C. Hammel
Bachelors’ Theses
There is no field in educational study which has done so much to bring about in our schools the realization of the spirit of the new education as has the study of extra-curriculum activities in secondary schools. The development of these activities has justified and possibly encouraged the rapid growth of our school population today.
