Food Insecurity For The Immigrant Population During The Novel Coronavirus-19, Bridget Gallagher

The Graduate Review

The novel Coronavisur-19 (COVID-19) has caused s widespread loss of life in the United States and globally and wrought enormous changes to our culture and lives. COVID-19 also has caused and intensified food insecurity, especially for immigrants. The pandemic has made visible and exacerbated longstanding problems of food insecurity and hunger in America. This paper suggests several approaches to mitigating food insecurity. Focusing on the immigrant community, the author argues that we can reduce hunger by reexamining and reinvigorating existing community resources and practical strategies, including neighborhood ethnic food stores, community gardens, advocacy, and outreach programs; and by enlisting specific …

Examining Sex And Race Difference In Obesity Risk Factors In Older Americans Using Genetic And Lifestyle Data In Regards, Hairui Yu

All ETDs from UAB

Obesity is a prevalent chronic condition determined by social, psychological, behavioral, and biological factors. The prevalence of obesity remains a major public health issue and has continued to rise in the United States and around the world. People who are obese face a higher risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The fat mass and obesityassociated gene (FTO) is one of the most commonly identified genes in obesity-related research. This three-paper dissertation is aimed at improving understanding of sex and race differences in obesity risk factors in older Americans from genetic (FTO SNPs) and lifestyle (diet and physical activity) perspectives, using …

Ethnic Discrimination, Social Cohesion, And Mental Health Among Latinx Adults, Lucas Torres, Jaclyn Pachicano, Claire Maria Bird, Lisa M. Edwards

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The negative effects of ethnic discrimination on depression symptoms have led researchers to identify potential risk and protective variables of this relationship. While some studies have focused on individual level factors, little research has explored the role of community-level variables, or the combination of both. The present study of Latinx adults (N = 304) tested a moderated mediation model to examine if alcohol use was a mediator of ethnic discrimination and depression under certain levels of social cohesion. Results found that alcohol use was a mediator between ethnic discrimination and depression symptoms and social cohesion moderated this relationship, such …

An Educational Program To Enhance Knowledge And Communication For Nursing Staff Who Care For Dementia Patients, Behnaz Mohammadi Jan 2022

An Educational Program To Enhance Knowledge And Communication For Nursing Staff Who Care For Dementia Patients, Behnaz Mohammadi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractDementia is a progressive chronic disease that requires skilled nursing care. Staff at a skilled nursing facility were not using best practices to prevent and manage the psychological and behavioral symptoms of dementia. The purpose of this DNP project was to implement a dementia care education to address this gap in knowledge. The question for the evidence-based educational project was whether the program increased knowledge, promoted positive attitudes, and increased confidence in dementia care staff. A 5-hour workshop was presented in person, twice in two weeks. The person-centered care model served as a framework for the project. Nursing staff (N …

Retention And Performance During Covid-19: Prosociality Perception, Social Isolation, And Online Engagement, Ashli L M Schick

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The experiences of university students impacted by COVID-19 and circumstances surrounding their experiences, help inform the future of higher education in the United States. In the uncertain and rapidly evolving higher education system, understanding retention patterns of students has become increasingly complex. This study examined how self-perceived prosociality and self-perceived social isolation among university students in an online education environment relate to the intention to re-enroll in university and their academic achievement (Grade Point Average; GPA). Ninety-seven university and community college students completed an online survey. Based on previous literature, we expected women to report higher prosociality perceptions than men …

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The purpose of this article is to explain how an occupational therapy (OT) program in a university setting developed a virtual Level II community-based fieldwork program in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. This virtual fieldwork program, guided by the PRECEDE-PROCEED Planning Model (PPM), was designed to help keep students on track with their academic goals while providing them with experiential learning that would increase their confidence in OT program planning and promote their professional development. Outcome measures for this study consisted of a pre-and post-fieldwork survey that asked participants to rank their self-perceived confidence in five distinct areas of …

Cohort Analysis Of Four Graduating Classes Of Occupational Therapy Students' Knowledge Of Aging, Lavona Traywick, Brittany N. Saviers, Terry Wayne Griffin, Teressa Brown

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

At the same time that the number of senior adults in the United States is steadily rising, there is also a rising shortage of allied health care professionals, including occupational therapists, to meet the current and expected needs of the senior adult population. There are national standards that all occupational therapy programs must meet; however, there is not a set national curriculum. It is assumed that students will enter their respective occupational therapy programs with a base knowledge of aging due to prerequisite requirements. To test that assumption, with Institutional Review Board approval, over four consecutive years 192 first-year, first-semester …

The Relationship Between Education Level, Retirement Status, And Civic Engagement Among Older Adults In Indonesia, I Komang Winata

Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan

The Indonesian population is aging very rapidly and as the number of old people increases, the number of retirees increases as well. Many scholars have argued the benefits of civic engagement in old age, but there is lack of empirical evidence of the factors associated with civic engagement in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between education levels, retirement status, and civic engagement among older adults in Indonesia. The study used data from the fifth wave of the Indonesia Family and Life Survey which was held in late 2014 and early 2015. The study included …

Advance Care Planning Within Individualized Care Plans: A Component Of Emergency Preparedness, Heather L. Church, Christina Marsack-Topolewski, Jacqueline M. Mcginley, Victoria Knoke

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal

Federally-legislated Medicaid requirements for recipients with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) to have a person-centered plan (PCP) do not specifically require that advanced care plans (ACP) be a component of the plan. However, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has provided a salient reminder of the importance of incorporating ACP within the PCP for people who have IDD. As demonstrated by situations arising from COVID-19, emergencies and crises can dramatically alter access to care for people with IDD. This paper synthesizes results from an environmental scan related to ACP for adults with IDD. Findings suggest that the use of ACP, particularly when …

Pearls Of Wisdom: A Portrait Of Artist-Educator Pearl Greenberg, Pamela Harris Lawton, Angela M. Laporte Oct 2021

Pearls Of Wisdom: A Portrait Of Artist-Educator Pearl Greenberg, Pamela Harris Lawton, Angela M. Laporte

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

This article examines the life of Dr. Pearl Greenberg, artist-educator-researcher and co-founder of the Committee on Lifelong Learning through narratives of remembrance by the authors, art education colleagues, and students who knew her. Using the qualitative research method of portraiture, an image emerges of Pearl as characterized by three patterns or themes consistently mentioned in the narratives: experiential knowledge, candidness, and supportive/mentorship. In addition, quotes from the “Aging Monologues,” Dr. Greenberg’s own narrative inquiry research, collecting narratives from participants aged 21 through 96 on their perspectives on aging, are incorporated to complete a rich, artful, and multi-layered portrait of Pearl.
