Children's Reading, Mildred Mary Grosskopf
Children's Reading, Mildred Mary Grosskopf
Bachelors’ Theses
Probably the subject in the curriculum which has been most thoroughly studied and investigated by educators during the last few years is reading. There has been "a search for easy methods, philosophic methods, all sorts of methods by which a child may be inducted into its delights and mysteries. - - - The subject has not only been covered, it has been immersed.” (Cf.”A Guide to Lit. for Children” by W. T. Field, p. 60.) But important as it is that the child be taught how to read, it is perhaps of even greater importance that he be guided in …

Musical Education And The Radio, Gerhardt Van Beck
Musical Education And The Radio, Gerhardt Van Beck
Bachelors’ Theses
If anyone attempts to write concerning the radio and the trends it is taking in education, he will soon discover that he can only indicate the direction of these trends and possible directions that they might take, because he is too close to the things still transpiring in the field of radio. Consequently, in this thesis on musical education and the radio, we can only try to show what is happening.

Art Education In The Intermediate Grades, Mina Mclaughlin
Art Education In The Intermediate Grades, Mina Mclaughlin
Bachelors’ Theses
Any history of art education in the United States, no matter how brief, should begin with the far-sighted vision of that great genius, Benjamin Franklin. As early as 1749, he advocated the teaching of drawing by imitation of prints and some of the first principles of perspective.
Reading In The Public Schools, Emilie M. Renz
Reading In The Public Schools, Emilie M. Renz
Bachelors’ Theses
All subjects in a school curriculum are designed to develop the pupils' powers to engage in desirable activities.
Reading is the most important subject in the curriculum. To teach it effectively requires careful daily preparation. The aim of reading instruction must be well understood and definite so that it may develop expressive oral readers as well as effective rapid silent readers. Expressive oral reading for entertainment purposes; skillful silent reading for meaning and satisfaction of the reader himself justifies the importance of this subject in the curriculum.
The Development Of Study Habits In The Junior High School, Selma L. Wolters
The Development Of Study Habits In The Junior High School, Selma L. Wolters
Bachelors’ Theses
The aim of this thesis is to show how definite study habits may be developed in the Junior High School. With children coming from many outlying schools, different nationalities and correspondingly different environments and study methods, it is imperative that at the beginning of the school year, one makes a brief survey of the entire group, seeing what has been done, the difficulties which are to be removed and how best to deal with various students who do not seem to have the necessary background for the establishment of sound study habits. Many books and numerous chapters have been written …
Gifted Children, Esther Wolfgram
Gifted Children, Esther Wolfgram
Bachelors’ Theses
In the past few years, the problem of the gifted children has been more thoroughly investigated than formerly. The experiments pertaining to the unfortunates--the delinquent and the feeble-minded--have been numerous, but the experiments dealing with the more fortunate have been neglected. This unfortunate neglect of the gifted has been due to the tendency of people to notice whatever gives them pain or annoyance. These problems were studied and experimented with; but the gifted children at the other end of the scale were neglected. The idea in teaching was to lift up the lowly end so there would not be such …

Essential Objectives Of Instruction In Reading In The Junior High School, Olive L. Christensen

The History Of Play In Education, Esther M. Hayes
The History Of Play In Education, Esther M. Hayes
Bachelors’ Theses
The value of play in education is no longer questioned by those who have studied the subject.
Play is an element in education. There is no contrast between play and education. Knowledge is useful only so far as it promotes efficiency in the practical affairs of life. It is in play that the child gains control of his body, acquires accuracy and precision in motion and judges distances, sights, and sounds.
The most fundamental lesson of character training is sportsmanship. It would be well worth putting play into the curriculum for this reason alone. Play is the most perfect democracy. …
Silent Reading In The Second Grade, Gertrude O'Neill
Silent Reading In The Second Grade, Gertrude O'Neill
Bachelors’ Theses
Silent Reading has been discussed very extensively by many of the best educators of the present day. Numerous investigations have been made so that we have quite an accurate knowledge of most of the vital things that are included in the process.
But a subject of so great importance and one which was wholly ignored until within a few decades, cannot be given too much consideration.
The reading in the primary grades should, to a great extent, be oral. However, a great deal of silent reading can be accomplished in the second grade.
Therefore, it is my purpose in writing …
The Function Of Play In The Primary Grades, Florence K. Mccabe
The Function Of Play In The Primary Grades, Florence K. Mccabe
Bachelors’ Theses
Play is universal. It is a form of language by means of which people all over the world express their emotions. It is not confined to any one people; it is not isolated to any one section of the world. In the kingdom as well as in the republic play reigns supreme. No law can or does attempt to suppress it, for leaders everywhere recognize the valuable part it holds in the life of man.
Modern Methods Of Teaching Geography In The Upper Grades, Ella M. Hoffman
Modern Methods Of Teaching Geography In The Upper Grades, Ella M. Hoffman
Bachelors’ Theses
With the outbreak of the World War, we, as a nation, became vitally interested in Europe. Later when we were drawn into the contest, that interest reached its highest pitch. Since then we have realized that geography is not a collection of dry, unrelated facts that must be learned merely for the sake of the mental training it gives us, but that it is a vital, living subject that concerns living, vital people all over the world and their relation to each other. When the war broke out, we were ashamed and astonished at our lack of geographic knowledge. We …

Training In Citizenship, Mary Jane Torphy
Training In Citizenship, Mary Jane Torphy
Bachelors’ Theses
It is my object to give attention, in this thesis, to the discussion of the development of citizenship of our American youth. It is upon this phase of education that our future success as a nation rests. We all sense the fact that there is something wrong with the citizenship of these modern times. Each generation is duty bound to take care of its own age and we must not sidestep ours. The children of today will be the men and women of tomorrow, and by our caring for this generation, we of necessity influence all time to come.

Teaching Of General Science In The Junior High School, Joseph T. Petska
Teaching Of General Science In The Junior High School, Joseph T. Petska
Bachelors’ Theses
In this age of science and materialism there is not in the writers opinion, a more enriching course in our high schools as is a well balanced, well organized course in general science! It is enriching because, if taught well, it functions in the lives of the learners, it bridges the gap between the life of the learner and his environment.
The writer feels that the work in general science is of great importance and is worthy of the best thought of those responsible for the details of the courses in this subject in the junior high school. In spite …
Major Aims And Objectives Of The Fourth Period Of Reading And How To Secure Them Through Pupil Activity, Margaret Hart
Major Aims And Objectives Of The Fourth Period Of Reading And How To Secure Them Through Pupil Activity, Margaret Hart
Bachelors’ Theses
Reading has been divided into five periods, which do not correspond to the hard and fast lines of the grade levels of a school system nor to the chronological or educational ages of any group of children. The first period is that of preparation for reading and embraces generally children of pre-school age, the kindergarten and the early first grade. This period is followed by the period of initial instruction in the first grade. Reading is introduced as a thought getting process and the ability to read very simple passages, independently and intelligently is developed. The third period covering the …
