Cheating In Online Courses For Financial Aid Fraud In The U.S., Robert S. Owen
Cheating In Online Courses For Financial Aid Fraud In The U.S., Robert S. Owen
Administrative Issues Journal
This manuscript reviews issues that differentiate traditional academic cheating from course misconduct that is motivated by a desire to defraud financial aid services in the U.S. Past research on college student cheating has assumed that cheaters are driven by an incentive to obtain undeserved grades in college in order to ultimately obtain a degree. However, researchers on academic dishonesty, professors, and college administrators might not realize that online class members can include virtual "straw" students who are puppets of a financial aid fraud ring leader. Cheating behaviors of straw students differ from cheating behaviors of actual, legitimate students. This has …

High School Graduates' Perspectives On The Creation Of Online Identities, Lisa Koh-Herlong
High School Graduates' Perspectives On The Creation Of Online Identities, Lisa Koh-Herlong
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Technological advancements continue to increase online accessibility and the virtual population. As students engage with these advancements, their lives and identities will be on a worldwide platform. The realities of online identities present a challenge for educators to teach students how to manage those online identities. Researchers have studied the after-effects of online identities, but there is a gap in understanding the individual's thought process during the creation of online identities. The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological analysis was to understand the perspectives of working high school graduates regarding the creation of online identities. The research questions were designed to …

Conditions Associated With Increased Risk Of Fraud: A Model For Publicly Traded Restaurant Companies, Elizabeth Yost
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The central focus of this dissertation study is to understand the impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the factors that contribute to increased risk of fraud in order to determine why fraud may occur despite the imposed regulation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The main premise of the study tests the application of the fraud triangle framework constructs to publicly traded restaurant companies during the time period of 2002-2014, using proxy variables defined through literature. Essentially, the study seeks to identify the factors that may provide the optimal criteria to engage in fraudulent or opportunistic behavior. The fraud triangle theoretical framework …

Impact Of Online Versus Face-To Face Instruction On Appraisal Student's Morality Levels, Samuel Martin
Impact Of Online Versus Face-To Face Instruction On Appraisal Student's Morality Levels, Samuel Martin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The financial markets have been in a state of chaos for a number of years. Some of the chaos was attributed to appraisers bending under unethical pressure exerted by lenders. The purpose of this study was to explore whether mode of instruction affected appraiser morality when participating in a Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) course, as measured by Rest's Defining Issues Test (DIT-2). The research question examined the difference between the effect on the morality schema of continuing appraisal students taking the 7-hour USPAP CE course online versus students taking the course in a face-to-face environment. The research …
Financial Literacy After Sarbanes-Oxley: Building It; Sustaining It, Edwin I. Malet
Financial Literacy After Sarbanes-Oxley: Building It; Sustaining It, Edwin I. Malet
Journal of Executive Education
The core theme of the article is that financial literacy is a challenging goal, but an achievable one. Contrary to popular belief, finance is a diverse subject and the meaning of “financial literacy” varies on a business-by-business, job-by-job basis. Practically speaking, “financial literacy” is interwoven with “business literacy”, i.e., understanding the transactions, processes, markets, stakeholders, etc., that together comprise a business. This makes it hard to deploy generic educational solutions. Some managers need more than others. Some need different than others. My recommendation is not to look for a universal definition of literacy, but rather to treat your company as …

A Comparative Analysis Of Effective School Board Leadership: The Case Of Gwinnett County And Atlanta City Public Schools, Joshua Allen Garner
A Comparative Analysis Of Effective School Board Leadership: The Case Of Gwinnett County And Atlanta City Public Schools, Joshua Allen Garner
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
A quality education is essential in determining the success of future generations. All too often K-12 school systems fail to meet the expectations of success held by students, parents, and the community. On the other hand, there are school systems that surpass expectations of success held by stake holders of the school system. Exemplifying this phenomenon is the case of Atlanta Public Schools, who were placed on probation by the accreditation agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the case of Gwinnett County Public Schools, who were awarded the 2010 Broad Award for minority student achievement (Torres 2011) …

Using Business Students ' Precepts To Predict Ethical Decision Making, Wally Guyot Ph.D., Robert Meier Ph.D., Reginald L. Bell
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
A 13-item questionnaire was administered to 259 business students on two college campuses, with a combined population of 1,872, to determine if religious affiliation, upbringing, profession, college major and several other independent variables (labeled precepts) could be used to predict students' perceptions of some main problems of philosophy. Stepwise multiple regression models revealed several significant differences, with p

An Exploratory Study of the Curricular Integration of Ethics in Executive MBA Programs
News headlines of corporate scandals have unleashed a contentious debate of whether or not graduate management education has contributed to corporate collapses and the resultant financial crisis. In particular, questions abound as to the willingness of Executive MBA program (EMBA) administrators and faculty to integrate ethics into the curriculum.
A sizable amount of research has been conducted and published on the curricular integration of ethics in graduate management education. Unfortunately, very little is known about the curricular integration of ethics in EMBA programs. Over time, the number …
