This study examined the similarities and differences among 171 Grade 7-12 science teachers from three different countries (54 U.S, 63 Bolivian, and 54 Turkish) with respect to their attitudes toward environmental education (EE) and instructional practices. The instrument employed explored how teachers‘ knowledge, instructional practices, decisionmaking process, and cultural features influenced their EE attitudes and praxis. The instrument, which was translated into Spanish and Turkish and then back into English, contained a personal data form that included demographic questions and a three-part questionnaire. Based on the analysis completed, significant differences were found between these three countries with respect to 1) …

Igniting And Nurturing The Next Generation Of Stem Talent, Innovation And Leadership, By Design, Stephanie Pace Marshall
Publications & Research
Our future will belong to a “new breed” of STEM talent— decidedly different STEM minds that understand interdependence; discern, analyze and connect illusive patterns within vast amounts of unstructured data; deftly change course when hypotheses and prototypes fail; systemically unravel complexity; creatively generate new ideas, questions, technologies and inventions; embrace ambiguity and uncertainty; and globally collaborate to wisely advance the human condition. In this age of escalating global challenges, accelerating technologies and design and human-centered innovation, the nature and quality of how our children think and what they think about is the new “currency” for breakthrough thinking, research and problem-solving, …

Culturally-Relevant Information Literacy: A Case Study, Rob Morrison
Culturally-Relevant Information Literacy: A Case Study, Rob Morrison
Dissertations
Information Literacy is a process for finding, using, evaluating and incorporating information into an individuals’ knowledge base. This process has been formalized into the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The concept of Information Literacy as articulated in the ACRL Standards is based on Western knowledge and ways of knowing that resides in academic disciplines. This knowledge is privileged and regarded as universal, rational, and superior to other forms of knowledge and does not incorporate or reflect non-Western epistemologies. This study questioned the universality of this process as reflective of being grounded in Western culture and knowledge.

It's All Happening At The Zoo: Children's Environmental Learning After School, Jason A. Douglas, Cindi Katz
Publications and Research
Pairing dynamic out-of-school-time (OST) programs with zoos can encourage young people's relationships with and sense of responsibility for animals and the environment. The project presented in this article, Animal Rescuers, gave the authors the opportunity to examine how such a pairing can work. OST programs enable learning in settings that are generally unavailable during school time (Honig & McDonald, 2005). They provide space for collaboration among students, teachers, and others such as program visitors or outside educators. Taking advantage of the flexibility, location, and educational playfulness of an OST setting, the authors worked intensively with a small number of 10-12-year-old …

Righteous Commitment: Renewing, Repairing, And Restoring The World—Wangari Maathai And The Green Belt Movement, Jennifer Lara Simka Kushner
Dissertations
This Africentric historical inquiry introduces Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel Peace Prize recipient and internationally renowned Kenyan activist, as a visionary adult educator and leader of the liberatory environmental movement -The Green Belt Movement. The Movement addresses decades of mis-education through culturally grounded adult education activities that help communities understand the linkages between environmental degradation and poor governance, and educate people to participate in democracy.
The study describes Maathai’s philosophy and how it informed her leadership of environmental, political, and social change. The African philosophical framework of Maat, and the principle of serudj-ta (repairing, renewing and restoring the world) provide a …

Scholarship In Action: Transforming Community And Higher Education, Nancy Cantor
Chancellor's Collection
Now is the time, as the Kellogg Commission has observed, for colleges and universities "to reshape our historic agreement with the American people so that it fits the times that are emerging instead of the times that have passed.” In the new world being forged by shared knowledge, universities are superbly positioned to transform themselves and their communities. We find ourselves on new ground, inspired by the possibilities for change, thinking about roles we can and should play in a new America. In this, we're invited by the social-legal theorist, Susan Sturm at Columbia to consider the “architecture of inclusion,” to …

Why Diversity Still Needs A Champion, Nancy Cantor
Chancellor's Collection
Although The New York Times has already observed that President Barack Obama is an "omnipresent icebreaker" in the national conversation about race, now is a good time to recall the President's warning that we will not "get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy" and that race is something in American history and life "that we've never really worked through." Diversity—and not only in race (though importantly race)—is an agenda that still needs champions, on campus as well as in Washington, D.C.

The Effect Of Environmental Service Learning On Empowerment For Responsible Environmental Behaviors In College Students, Derek W. Rosenberger
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The purpose of this study was to empirically test whether service learning pedagogy utilized in a general education science course is able to promote locus of control (LOC) for responsible environmental behavior (REB) and intent to act (ITA) upon REB. To measure this, two instruments, the Environmental Action Internal Control Inventory, developed by Smith-Sebasto and Fortner (1994) to test for LOC for REB, and Hsu’s (1997) ITA construct, developed to test for ITA upon REB were administered to two sections of a general education science course for non-science majors utilizing a nonequivalent pretest posttest control group design. This study shows …

Regrettably, most American students experience STEM learning as an exclusive, individual, theoretical and “formulaic” enterprise. By decoupling STEM education from the human experience, we have distorted the essential nature of the scientific enterprise and advanced instrumentalist and utilitarian rationales for pursuing STEM careers—global economic superiority and technological competition.

The Application Of Bok’S Undergraduate Educational Framework In The Analysis And Acquisition Of Core Competencies Among Camp Adventure Youth Services Seasonal Staff, Bin Ruan
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth trajectory of college and/or university students in core competencies from entry to exit in the Camp Adventure™ Youth Services (CAYS) experience using the lens offered by Bok's framework. Specifically, students' growth patterns in core competencies were charted at three phases, namely, (1) baseline of their core competencies at entry level; (2) after receiving knowledge and practical training on the theory and implementation of CAYS' course but before its field experience; and (3) immediately after the CAYS' field experience. The core competencies included in the study were, according to Bok's framework, …
