Social Justice Mathematics: Classroom Practices That Give Students Rigor While Building Agency, Emily Marquise
Social Justice Mathematics: Classroom Practices That Give Students Rigor While Building Agency, Emily Marquise
Masters Theses (Archived)
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of a social justice approach to mathematics instruction. While many students have math aversion, students in low socioeconomic communities exhibit this to a higher degree putting them at a disadvantage as they progress through their educational career. More than 3.4 million K-12 students in the United States come from families that earn less than the median income yet achieve scores in the top percentile (Wyner et al., 2007). This raises the question of why so many students in low-socioeconomic settings are not given rigorous content that will keep them competitive …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused diverse social, economic, and political challenges. The particular challenge that was the focus of this study is the upsurge in electronic use and consequent upsurge in electronic waste. This was caused by the implementation of online instructional delivery processes during Covid-19 (Ermakova, 2021), the switch to home offices (Adejumo & Oluduro, 2021) and the fact that school districts have directed massive financial investments to instructional technology (Baldé & Kuehr, 2021). This trend of heightened e-waste generation is likely to continue (Jiang et al., 2021).
I used a qualitative approach to address the two research questions. …
Making Kin With Trees: Three Educators And Children Entangled With Treescapes, Stephanie Jones, Lindsey Lush, Sarah Whitaker
Making Kin With Trees: Three Educators And Children Entangled With Treescapes, Stephanie Jones, Lindsey Lush, Sarah Whitaker
Occasional Paper Series
In this article, three educators from one small U.S. city draw on Donna Haraway’s feminist, posthumanist idea of making kin to explore their personal relations with trees and their work as educators to support children’s entanglements with trees. Working in three very different contexts with children: a working-class neighborhood, a public school kindergarten, and a forest kindergarten, the three authors illuminate the “magical” emergences of making kin with trees that fundamentally shifts what becomes possible to do and be. Their writing contributes to the fields of critical childhood geographies, feminist posthumanist pedagogies in early childhood education, and writing in affect …

Fostering A Sense Of Online Community: Faculty Reflections Through Narratives, Brittany D. Anthony
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study will explore how MSW faculty describe a community in online courses and what strategies they use in fostering a sense of community within courses from an online Master of Social Work program at the University of South Florida. There is an imperative need to ensure online courses provide a sense of community to support students for success. During the timespan of an online course, strategic pedagogical approaches to fostering a community are essential to enriching the overall learning experience for students. Many studies tend to focus on the challenges faced when building an online community. Still, the …

The Exploration Of Biochemistry Laboratory Activity: Study On Higher Education In Mataram, Yunita Arian Sani Anwar, Muti’Ah Muti'ah
Jurnal Inovasi Pendidikan IPA
As the core of science learning, laboratory work is inseparable from learning chemistry, including biochemistry. However, the implementation of laboratory work needs reconstruction, especially in higher education, so an initial study is needed to understand the problems in laboratory work at universities. This article was a study of the working conditions of the biochemistry laboratory at the University of Mataram. This study included quantitative research with students (N = 250), lab work assistants (N = 36), laboratorium staff (N = 4), and biochemistry lecturers (N = 4) as respondents. Techniques for obtaining data through participatory observation and questionnaires. Supporting data …

Teacher Candidates’ Conceptions And Practices Of Computational Thinking For Equity, Heather F. Clark, Symone A. Gyles, Imelda Nava-Landeros
Journal of Computer Science Integration
This study documents novice science and math teachers’ developing pedagogical approaches to integrating computational thinking (CT) and data into their courses to support educational equity and social justice. The 10 novice teacher candidates (TCs) studied were part of an urban teacher residency program that empowered them with an asset-based pedagogy we describe as “CT for Equity.” Drawing on coursework and interviews as data, we asked three questions: What are teachers’ conceptions of CT? What are their CT instructional practices? And how did their students respond to those practices? To explore conceptions of CT, we used Kafai et al.’s (2020) articulation …
Land Education And Young People Working Toward Salamander: Collective Well-Being In Response To Bioindicators Of Socioenvironmental Justice, Rachael Arens, Ricardo Martinez
Land Education And Young People Working Toward Salamander: Collective Well-Being In Response To Bioindicators Of Socioenvironmental Justice, Rachael Arens, Ricardo Martinez
Democracy & Education
Our planet is facing many environmental challenges, including climate change, loss of biodiversity and habitat, and pollution, while many of our populations are also experiencing marginalization due to poverty, race, gender, language, ability, and environmental injustices. Environmental hazards and policies often impact those in society who are most at-risk, creating a need for an environmental education (EE) movement that encourages students to challenge and regain control of a system that impacts them. Teachers can implement a reflection tool known as the SALAMANDER Collective Well-Being in Response to Bioindicators of Socioenvironmental Justice Framework to prompt students and other educators to place …

Education Faculty Articles and Research
Sustainability leadership has the transformative potential of helping to center an array of skills and mindsets needed for leaders and leaderful organizations and collectives to successfully address the many interrelated and connected challenges of the 21st century. This article makes the case that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a useful framework for integrating sustainability into leadership education and development broadly and can advance these needed skill sets and learning orientations. Leadership educators should consider centering this in their work in order to effectively prepare learners for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Place-Based Environmental Education Towards Collective Environmental Literacy, Nicole Stubbs
Place-Based Environmental Education Towards Collective Environmental Literacy, Nicole Stubbs
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
As environmental issues and environmental injustices persist, it is even more important for environmental educators to foster in individuals and groups the skills, knowledge, and natural appreciation needed to timely address these issues. Place-focused environmental education that seeks to address an individual’s sense of place can deepen an individual's connection with their local environment and community. A developed sense of place within a group can also pave the way for collective environmental literacy, the literacy held by a community and defined by the characteristics of collective action, collaboration, shared knowledge, and diverse perspectives. This capstone seeks to answer the question: …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The editorial group acknowledges the wisdom of Indigenous knowledge keepers and their past and continuous relationships with place, on every continent on earth where humans have lived for aeons. Indigenous wisdom is their life-giving gift to communities everywhere for planetary futures. It is precious, having integrity and an ethic of responsibility and care. Indigenous wisdom as environmental education is the oldest education, being tens of thousands of years of continuity before waves of apocalyptic colonial violence during the last few centuries interrupted lifeways and language-embedded knowledge systems, some forever gone . . .

Inequality And Superfund Sites: Using Backward Design, Cooperative Learning, And Data Integration In Introductory Environmental Economics, Anna A. Klis
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Environmental justice is an important topic that can be better understood by using the tools of economics. The author of this article describes a data integration exercise that connects data available through government portals: the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Superfund Sites Where You Live” interactive map, data on Net Present Values from Superfund Records of Decisions (ROD), and FRED. Created with the principles of backward design, the exercise uses cooperative learning by having students take ownership of sites chosen for investigation, as well as build and test hypotheses regarding the relationship between per capita GDP and site location/cleanup cost.

Justice House At Niagara University: An Emerging Approach To Teaching Vincentian Social Justice During And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kevin A. Hinkley
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Some commentators have predicted that the disruptive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will transform the landscape of higher education in the United States. For example, Scott Galloway, Professor of Marketing at NYU Stern School of Business, predicts that most U.S. colleges and universities will either “go out of business or become a shadow of themselves.” Professor Galloway argues that the few elite universities that survive will enter into corporate partnerships with Big Tech companies such as Google, Apple, and Meta. From this perspective, for the overwhelming majority of U.S. colleges and universities there won’t be a “post-pandemic recovery”— at least …
Just Mathematics: Getting Started Teaching Postsecondary Math For Social Justice, Kenan A. Ince
Just Mathematics: Getting Started Teaching Postsecondary Math For Social Justice, Kenan A. Ince
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Following the summer 2020 civil rights movement and increasing attention to the intersections of mathematics with politics and power, many math educators have reported a desire to implement an antiracist pedagogy and to examine the intersections of their subject with issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice. Many resources exist for K-12 math educators interested in incorporating social justice into their curricula, but resources are comparatively scarce for college and university instructors (though this is changing quickly!). We discuss why one may want to teach mathematics for social justice, how to begin to implement issues of social justice into postsecondary …
