A Cross-Cultural Study Of Conformity In Americans And Chinese., Lily C. Huang
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Conformity In Americans And Chinese., Lily C. Huang
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The present investigation intended to study conformity of Chinese and Americans in several different situations through three independent experiments conducted in Taipei, Taiwan and in Albuquerque, New Mexico, based on the paradigm adapted from imitation studies. From historical and anthropological analyses of Chinese and American cultures, as ·well as from more recent experimental studies, there were reasons to expect Chinese to be more conforming and their behavior more dependent upon environmental influences. Experiment One studied the effects of a model's task specific competence and general status on adult Ss' conformity in a survey-taking field situation. The results showed that Chinese …

The Determinants Of Curricular Offerings In Selected Public Adult High Schools In California., Vernon Stanley Jaquith
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
One of the tasks of the adult school administrator is that of planning the program to be offered to the public. Is it well balanced academic and vocational areas; does it satisfy the needs of the home-maker, the student, the apprentice; does it offer something for each to fulfill his educational needs? These and a number of other questions must be answered before an adult school program will satisfy the educational needs of the adult community it is to serve. Damon stated it well when he wrote that: Although adult education is assuming a more important place in the public …

An Alternative Analysis For The Situational Attitudes Scale, Charles G. Eberly
An Alternative Analysis For The Situational Attitudes Scale, Charles G. Eberly
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
A re-analysis of the Situational Attitudes Scale (SAS) was conducted to investigate lts generality, validity and reliability and to suggest a more conservative method of analyzing the data. Three forms of the SAS were developed under the name Situational Attitude Inventory. Forms A and B corresponded to the originals; they tested attitudes toward whites and blacks, respectively, in varying social situations. Form c was developed to test the validity of the social situations for differentiation among alternative referents, which included welfare, age, ethnicity, and physical characteristics. The SAS was administered to a random sample of new freshman and transfer students …

Retention Of Traditional Culture Concepts And Attitudes Toward Education By Mexican-American Adults In Chelan And Douglas Counties, Jacqueline Mae Lee
Retention Of Traditional Culture Concepts And Attitudes Toward Education By Mexican-American Adults In Chelan And Douglas Counties, Jacqueline Mae Lee
All Master's Theses
This paper investigates t he hypothesis that where Mexican-Americans are few and far from the influence of Mexican culture, assimilation into Anglo culture has been more successful than in the southwest, where culture conflict necessitates special teaching methods. The study analyzes open-ended interviews with Mexican-American adults in Chelan and Douglas Counties, Washington, which reflect retention of traditional culture concepts and indifferent educational attitudes. The hypothesis is disproven.
Recommendations include altering parental educational attitudes through home visits by teachers.

Open-Closed Mindedness Of Students In Teacher Education And In Other College Fields, W. Blair Low
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Purpose of the Study
This study sought to determine if teacher education students in two institutions of higher education were more authoritarian or closed minded than students in other fields of study. In addition, the study was designed to explore the relationship of other variables--sex, religious affiliation, church attendance, and city size and state of child residency-- to open-closed mindedness.
Methods and Procedures
Participating in this study were 1049 junior and senior students from Utah State University and 837 subjects from Weber State College. Subjects were primarily from a Latter-day Saint (Mormon) subculture. All subjects were administered the F Scale …

An Investigation Of Occupational Values Held By A Group Of Rural Northern New Mexico Senior High School Students, Bill Leslie Johnson
An Investigation Of Occupational Values Held By A Group Of Rural Northern New Mexico Senior High School Students, Bill Leslie Johnson
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The general objective of this research was to make certain predictions concerning occupational values from the cultural values of the three major ethnic groups represented in northern New Mexico—Anglo, Spanish-American, and Indian. A corollary to this main purpose was an investigation of the effect of maturation and sex upon occupational values. The research problem, then, centered upon analyzing differences in patterns of occupational values among various categories of individuals.

The Effects Of Type Of Reinforcer On Several Lower-Class Cultural Groups., Irene D. Hassett
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Seventy-two is (half males, half females) from each of four lower-class cultural groups, i.e., Anglo, Black, Spanish-American, and Navaho, were randomly assig ed to four reward conditions: money, candy, personal-praise, and performance-directed-praise. Each S was given a 10-minute marble dropping task, in which the third minute was designated as the baseline. D ring minutes four through ten, two response measures were derived for each S: rate of response, and a reinforcer effectiveness score. Data on both of these measures were subjected to an analysis of variance. One female graduate student in psychology tested all of the Ss. The following hypothesis …
