Humanistic Biology: A General Education Approach, Alwynelle S. Ahl, Lawrence R. Krupka, Helen B. Hiscoe, Andrew Mcclary

Perspectives (1969-1979)

In modern man's attempt to understand human nature, two major modes of perceiving human experience, the humanistic and scientific, have often been in conflict. C.P. Snow labelled this dichotomy " the two cultures." As the power of science and accompanying technology have grown in the past forty years, the distance between the two cultures has widened. Reflecting concern about this cleavage, some scientists have attempted to incorporate humanistic perspectives and goals into science. In the area of biology, this humanistic concern is demonstrated by such groups as the Institute of Society, Ethics, and the Life Sciences (Hastings-on-Hudson) and its highly …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Effects Of Eighth Grade Career Counseling And Guidance On Eleventh Grade Occupational Interests As Measured By The Ohio Vocational Interest Survey., Norma Jean Gates

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Students have reacted positively to personal contact with school counselors in regard to learning about themselves in relationship to potential career goals. There appears to be a need, however, to ascertain the effect of career counseling at the upper elementary grades upon career awareness and development at a later secondary grade. In addition, there is a need to study the effects of individual versus group career guidance at the upper elementary grades with reference to the career choices selected at a later secondary grade.

Interrelationship Of Orthography And Phonological Structure In Learning To Read, J. G. Barnitz Jan 1978

Interrelationship Of Orthography And Phonological Structure In Learning To Read, J. G. Barnitz

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications

Literature related to orthography, phonology, and reading is reviewed and synthesized in order to develop a rationale for a "goodness of fit" hypothesis. This hypothesis asserts that a writing system which is more consistently fit to the phonological structure of a particular language is more likely to facilitate learning to read. Conversely, a language whose writing system is less consistent or more abstract is likely to lead to more difficulty for the child learning to read. This claim is examined in the context of studies on various writing systems, cross-cultural and bilingual research, history of the language, and studies on …

A Series Of Dialogues For Foreign Students Who Have Just Arrived In The United States, Stephen B. Gelman Jan 1977

A Series Of Dialogues For Foreign Students Who Have Just Arrived In The United States, Stephen B. Gelman

MA TESOL Collection

From my experience with beginning or intermediate students who have just arrived in the States, I have found that they lack confidence in dealing with real situations outside the ESL classroom and in interacting with Americans because of their inability to speak or understand normal spoken English. They need some preparation and encouragement to ease the cultural shock they will encounter.

In this project, I have used a series of dialogues to prepare the students for the most common situations they will experience almost immediately, such as opening a checking account or eating in a restaurant. Another purpose of these …

The Education Power In Canada, Harry C. Phillips Jan 1977

The Education Power In Canada, Harry C. Phillips

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In an influential book entitled Federal Government, Professor K.C. Wheare observed that in countries satisfying in practice his understanding of the federal principle, namely the United States of America, Switzerland, Canada and Australia, education was a matter substantially in the hands of regional (state, canton, provincial) governments. The federal principle was defined (Wheare, 1967[ p.10) as "the method of dividing powers so that the general and regional governments are each within a sphere co-ordinate and independent". After the federal bargain (Riker, 1964, P.11) has been negotiated, powers are sacrificed to the central organ but the contract.ing political entities are granted …

The investigation focused on four subproblems: (1) the meaning and significance of character; (2) the nature of character development; (3) factors affecting character development; and (4) responsibility for character development.

Method. The problem was approached by (1) carefully perusing White's published writings and noting every statement related to the study; (2) inductively …
