An Exploratory, Cross-Cultural Study Of Sociopsychological Variables (Opi) Comparing Selective American, Canadian, Hawaiian And Philippine College Students In Education Faculties, David Whittaker

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

To the psychologist interested in cross-cultural studies and higher education in general, and college students more specifically, attitudes and belief systems can be seen as being fundamental in order to appreciate and understand any person, subculture or society. "Attitudes" denote the way in which people "feel" about aspects of the world in which they live, and "beliefs" the way they "think" about them. These terms are. of course, hypothetical constructs - as is "personality" under which they are subsumed. How such variables are defined, the theoretical traditions on which they are based, and the conceptualisations of personality which is adopted …

The Course Of Study In American Education: Past, Present And Future, Marilyn B. Winters

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The purposes of this study were twofold. The first was to trace the development of curriculum guides from Germany to American educational practices of today. The second was to analyze a set of older and a set of contemporary curriculum guides. The historical section was prepared through extensive library research, analysis of old and rare guides and consultations with curriculum scholars. The analysis of guides utilized a data collection instrument developed for the study. Two sets of curriculum guides were analyzed: twenty-six older guides dated 1871-1928, obtained from a collection at Columbia University and fifty-one contemporary guides from the 1981 …

Social Theory And Social Practice In Art Teacher Education, Dan Nadaner Jan 1984

Social Theory And Social Practice In Art Teacher Education, Dan Nadaner

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

It seems clear that art educators must think clearly about the design of teacher education programs if social theory is to become social practice. The obstacles to successful integration of theory and practice are many, ranging from the logistics of engaging artist-teachers in theoretical studies, to the intrinsically different natures of theoretical and practical activities. And it is difficult to guarantee that such amorphous qualities as flexible dialogue, love, hope, and mutual trust can be made part of a teacher education program, even when a deliberate effort is made to do so. But while the model of teacher education discussed …

A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Relation Between Degree Of American Acculturation And Androgyny, Chui-Liu Serena Gui

Dissertations

Problem. Research has identified culture as one of the factors which reinforces sex-appropriate behaviors and punishes inappropriate behaviors for each gender. The purpose of this study was to validate the theory that culture is an influencing factor in the development of sex-role acquisition through studying two diversely different cultures.

Method. This study employed the Bem Inventory for the measurement of sex-role typing. There were a total of 374 college-age females from either a Chinese culture or Anglo-American culture who participated in the study. The subjects were divided into five groups according to the degree of American acculturation. Three null hypotheses were …
