Use Of Departmental Review As Part Of The Assessment Process, James H. Mcbath Apr 1990

Use Of Departmental Review As Part Of The Assessment Process, James H. Mcbath

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines departmental review as a central instrument in outcomes assessment for higher education communication programs. Situating the practice within escalating legislative accreditation and board level accountability, it traces common anxieties that reviews may prompt program closure or reconfiguration. Through case analysis, this article identifies pitfalls arising from unclear objectives, partial data, and uneven participation, and then articulates two guiding principles: evaluation must rest on transparent standards and on evidence grounded in disciplinary knowledge. The discussion links evaluation criteria curriculum adequacy faculty quality resource allocation and graduate performance, with attention to external audiences who often misunderstand communication studies. Concluding …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article presents discipline specific guidelines for outcomes assessment in higher education theatre programs, developed by a national task force convened by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. The text categorizes desired learning outcomes, ranging from historical and critical knowledge to creative imagination, professional discipline, and collaborative competence. It then outlines multiple assessment sources and instruments, including performance juries, portfolios, comparative video taping, exit interviews, and alumni surveys, advocating a multi method approach that respects program mission …

This paper aims to present a theoretical rationale for the internship year, to explain how its design is intended to work towards the achievement of the goal of qualitative improvement in …

Curriculum Decision Making For National Interest In The Tertiary Sector: An Evaluation Of A Curriculum Project, Stephen Duggan, Lyndall Boyle

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper is concerned with a study of comparative curriculum practice within the tertiary sector. Within Australia, curriculum practice, innovation, planning and evaluation has occurred mainly within the primary and secondary school system. However, since the mid-1980s, educational strategies for national interest have seen the evolution of informed curriculum research and development within the tertiary sector, as universities and colleges endeavour to meet nationally determined educational goals and objectives. This study relates the research process involved when tertiary educators (and researchers) are faced with the task of reconciling local, regional and national objectives. In particular, it considers the dynamics of …

Worldview Theory And Science Education Research: Fundamental Epistemological Structure As A Critical Factor In Science Learning And Attitude Development, William W. Cobern Mar 1989

Worldview Theory And Science Education Research: Fundamental Epistemological Structure As A Critical Factor In Science Learning And Attitude Development, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

This research paper war originally presented at the annual meeting of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, San Francisco, March 1989. This research was funded by a grant from the Sid Richardson Endowment at Austin College.

Some of the most interesting work currently being done in science education research is with scientifically misconceived ideas about the causes and mechanisms of natural phenomena, or as it is more simply referred to, misconception research. This type of research can be dated as early as the sixties (see Kuethe, 1963; Boyd, 1966); but it came into its own with the 1983 …

Cross-Cultural Literacy: An American Imperative, Margaret Baird Davis Jan 1989

Cross-Cultural Literacy: An American Imperative, Margaret Baird Davis

Graduate Research Papers

The world is becoming a global village, say the experts. Just as individuals are dependent upon and, in turn, are depended on by their family, friends, and immediate communities, so are the nations of the world becoming highly interdependent (Brademas, 1987; Horne & Masson, 1988). The more this situation comes to pass, the more important does it become that we all make ourselves cross-culturally literate--that we become knowledgeable, that is, of the political and economic systems that exist around the world and of the many different ways people have of thinking, feeling, acting, and viewing things.

Critical Pedagogy And The Postmodern Challenge: Toward A Critical Postmodernist Pedagogy Of Liberation, Peter Mclaren, Rhonda Hammer Jan 1989

Critical Pedagogy And The Postmodern Challenge: Toward A Critical Postmodernist Pedagogy Of Liberation, Peter Mclaren, Rhonda Hammer

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"Work within the field of critical pedagogy is currently being undertaken in the United States and Canada during what we consider a precipitous and precarious time. The present historical juncture may be singled out as a moment of particular urgency and importance for the future of democracy as we bear witness to two conflicting potentialities which manifest themselves in the struggle on an increasing worldwide basis between democratic forms of social life and those which can be labelled totalitarian and autocratic. A significant dimension of this crisis involves the politics of meaning and representation. We call attention to the present …

Toward Foundations For A Socially Critical Art Education, Paul Duncum Jan 1989

Toward Foundations For A Socially Critical Art Education, Paul Duncum

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Significant recent developments in Australian art education have moved away from a consideration of the aesthetic value of fine art products to a broad sociological conception of the visual arts which includes folk and popular arts. Many art educators assume a socially functionalist approach which celebrates cultural diversity and attempts to describe the function of cultural artifacts, sometimes in terms of lived experience. While acknowledging the importance of these developments, the author adopts the view that cultural production is part of an unjust society in ferment and is a site of ideological struggle. The view advanced is that to be …

Dbae And Clae: Relevance For Minority And Multicultural Students, Barbara Boyer Jan 1989

Dbae And Clae: Relevance For Minority And Multicultural Students, Barbara Boyer

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The importance of art programming which reflects, and is responsive to the diverse needs of students in a multicultural society is examined. It is argued that the DBAE fails to consider the increasing diversity among the population of our schools in the prescription of standardized and achievement oriented curricula. It is further claimed that CLAE offers an alternative to DBAE which promotes sensitivity to the cultural make-up of our classrooms.

Exploring Conflict And Resolve Through Quality Children's Literature, Frances D. Kennedy Jan 1989

Exploring Conflict And Resolve Through Quality Children's Literature, Frances D. Kennedy

Graduate Research Papers

This paper explores the value of story structure in offering insights into human conflict and its resolve and in providing bounds in which children can explore these conflicts. A search for quality literature judged appropriate for the intellectual development of middle childhood (ages nine to eleven) will be conducted. The potential offered by these selected works in relating that characters create action and therefore resolve will be investigated.
