Before we let the pendulum swing to the new we should examine the new rather closely from many angles. Perhaps the new is only the old in a new dress. It may look alluring but offer no more than we now have. It may not be based on sound psychology or sound pedagogy. The desire at present seems to be for more freedom in our schools and less of the ready-made education—more activity on the part …

The Teaching Of English In The Elementary Schools, Julia Agnes Regan Jun 1925

The Teaching Of English In The Elementary Schools, Julia Agnes Regan

Bachelors’ Theses

From one point of view the significance of the development of modern education can best be estimated by the progress of the mother-tongue toward the central place in formal instruction. When the study of the mother-tongue and its literature is made the core of the curriculum, education is something quite different from that training in which a foreign, perhaps an ancient tongue holds the chief place.
