The County Supervisor And The Beginning Teacher, May L. Wood May 1932

The County Supervisor And The Beginning Teacher, May L. Wood

Bachelors’ Theses

Rural schools are unmistakably a real and integral part of our national system of education. Our educators have long been directing their best efforts towards improving methods of education, attitudes and standards. But unfortunately, our rural schools have not been able to partake sufficiently of all the good to be derived from these studies. Non-scholastic influences are operating against their best efficiency. An analysis of these non-scholastic influences is the purpose of this thesis.

This is not to be considered in any manner an arraignment of the rural schools as such. Rather, it is because of an appreciation of the …

Trends In The Teaching Of Oral And Written English In The Upper Grades, Alice E. Fowler May 1932

Trends In The Teaching Of Oral And Written English In The Upper Grades, Alice E. Fowler

Bachelors’ Theses

English is a unit of study. Including in its scope "language" in the lower grades and spelling, reading, composition and grammar in the upper, it is by far the most important subject in our schools. All parts of this whole are closely interwoven, and the study of one of these branches is the study of the whole. An understanding of grammar aids in correct expression; a knowledge of the difficulties of composition lays a foundation for a true appreciation of literature; and literature itself is the best aid in the art of graceful and powerful composition.

The History Of Play In Education, Esther M. Hayes May 1932

The History Of Play In Education, Esther M. Hayes

Bachelors’ Theses

The value of play in education is no longer questioned by those who have studied the subject.

Play is an element in education. There is no contrast between play and education. Knowledge is useful only so far as it promotes efficiency in the practical affairs of life. It is in play that the child gains control of his body, acquires accuracy and precision in motion and judges distances, sights, and sounds.

The most fundamental lesson of character training is sportsmanship. It would be well worth putting play into the curriculum for this reason alone. Play is the most perfect democracy. …

The Function Of Play In The Primary Grades, Florence K. Mccabe May 1932

The Function Of Play In The Primary Grades, Florence K. Mccabe

Bachelors’ Theses

Play is universal. It is a form of language by means of which people all over the world express their emotions. It is not confined to any one people; it is not isolated to any one section of the world. In the kingdom as well as in the republic play reigns supreme. No law can or does attempt to suppress it, for leaders everywhere recognize the valuable part it holds in the life of man.

Health Education In The Primary Grades, Editta S. Kyro May 1932

Health Education In The Primary Grades, Editta S. Kyro

Bachelors’ Theses

Our foremost educators in their most recent statements of educational principles and objectives, are quite seriously placing health as the first and fundamental objective of education. The need and value of health activities in schools has been recognized by them, and as a result, they have concluded that the protection of a child’s health is a fundamental school obligation.

Modern Methods Of Teaching Geography In The Upper Grades, Ella M. Hoffman May 1932

Modern Methods Of Teaching Geography In The Upper Grades, Ella M. Hoffman

Bachelors’ Theses

With the outbreak of the World War, we, as a nation, became vitally interested in Europe. Later when we were drawn into the contest, that interest reached its highest pitch. Since then we have realized that geography is not a collection of dry, unrelated facts that must be learned merely for the sake of the mental training it gives us, but that it is a vital, living subject that concerns living, vital people all over the world and their relation to each other. When the war broke out, we were ashamed and astonished at our lack of geographic knowledge. We …

Social Significance Of Language Teaching, Ottilia Neumeister May 1932

Social Significance Of Language Teaching, Ottilia Neumeister

Bachelors’ Theses

In writing this paper, it is my attempt to show, mainly through quotations from those we consider authorities in the fields of education, the significance of language teaching arising from the significance of language abilities which are so fundamental in the spelling of the thing that makes for world progress and civilization.

Silent And Oral Reading In The Fourth Grade, Ida M. Golden

Bachelors’ Theses

Th© value of the ability to read, understandingly and. rapidly is being recognized, more and. more by people in all walks of life. The possession of reading ability makes it possible for one to enrich his own life, become more efficient in his chosen work, and be of greater service to the world in which he lives.

Training In Citizenship, Mary Jane Torphy Apr 1932

Training In Citizenship, Mary Jane Torphy

Bachelors’ Theses

It is my object to give attention, in this thesis, to the discussion of the development of citizenship of our American youth. It is upon this phase of education that our future success as a nation rests. We all sense the fact that there is something wrong with the citizenship of these modern times. Each generation is duty bound to take care of its own age and we must not sidestep ours. The children of today will be the men and women of tomorrow, and by our caring for this generation, we of necessity influence all time to come.
