The Feldman Method Of Art Criticism: Is It Adequate For The Socially Concerned Art Educator?, Tom Anderson
The Feldman Method Of Art Criticism: Is It Adequate For The Socially Concerned Art Educator?, Tom Anderson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The structure and inherent values of the Feldman (1981) method of art criticism are debated in some art education circles. On one hand it is argued that the Feldman method, because of its emphasis on formal analysis, lends itself more readily to analytical formalist criticism, and is thus not an adequate instrument for socially concerned art educators. The other side of the debate has it that the method is appropriate for socially contextual interpretation when applied by socially concerned art educators. My thesis is that Feldman's method is well suited for socially contextual criticism of aesthetic forms. I intend to …
Children’S Views On Art In The Primary Grades, K-3, Nancy R. Johnson
Children’S Views On Art In The Primary Grades, K-3, Nancy R. Johnson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This study examined some of the kinds of know ledge that primary students have regarding art. Approximately one hundred students participated in the study. The researcher visited their classrooms, sat among them, and interviewed them as they did their art work. Although the students appeared to have an accurate grasp of the methods for working with art media, they were not very knowledgeable about ways to judge art. At all grade levels, the students' knowledge was somewhat inconsistent and not articulated very well. The students exhibited both unique meanings and socially shared meanings in their discourse and confirmed the importance …

History of Education Book Gallery
This is the second of a proposed series of biennial reports which attempts to summarize some of the research and creative activity of the faculty, students, and research units at UNI. To be included, the activity must have been conducted between July 1, 1984 and June 30, 1986. Data have been derived from a number of offices: grants and contracts, commencement programs submitted by the Registrar, publications in the President's Bulletin, Academic Deans, and the Graduate College. Most of the data are presented in table form and are self explanatory.

The First Ten Years: Aboriginal Enclaves Tenth Anniversary, Simon Forrest, Colleen Pead
Research outputs pre 2011
An enclave is the territory of a minority group found contained within the territory of a larger group. When the first enclave was started at Mount Lawley College in 1976, it was seen as a place where Aboriginal students could retreat from the hustle and bustle of College life to be with people they felt comfortable with, and refresh themselves for return to the wider world again. A second enclave was established at the Nedlands Campus in 1982, an external one at Broome in 1983 and in 1985 new enclaves have been established at Churchlands, Claremont and Carnarvon. In 1986 …

A Survey And Analysis Of The Beginning Teacher Program In Florida And Its Relationship To Effective Education, Joanne Mullins Olson
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to determine whether there were significant factors contributing to a teacher's ability to perform effectively in the classroom. An approximate 5% stratified random sample was selected from 9,401 possible subjects in Florida's Beginning Teacher Program between 1982 and 1985. A comparison of descriptive and reportive data was performed for teachers who completed and teachers who did not complete the program.
Statistical measures included the use of contingency tables, chi-square statistic, frequency distributions and t-tests. Results suggested that a teacher's possibility of successfully completing Florida's Beginning Teacher Program was influenced by the participant's age, grade point average, …

A Study Of The Attitudes Of Michigan School Board Presidents Toward Superintendents' Political And Policy Leadership In Third And Fourth Class School Districts, Jon Bradley Johnson
A Study Of The Attitudes Of Michigan School Board Presidents Toward Superintendents' Political And Policy Leadership In Third And Fourth Class School Districts, Jon Bradley Johnson
Dissertations
The question of whether the school board or the superintendent really governs public schools continues to appear in the literature. An issue related to this question is the amount of political and policy leadership exercised by superintendents.
The purpose of this study was to make a beginning inquiry into current expectations for superintendent political and policy leadership by school board presidents.
Five hypotheses were identified involving variables of political and policy leadership, intraboard cohesion, and size of the district.
The research included requesting data from school board presidents of 513 third and fourth class school districts in Michigan. Eventually 396 …
A Comparative Study Of The Learning Styles Of Southeast Asian And American Caucasian College Students On Two Seventh-Day Adventist Campuses, Sally Lam-Phoon
A Comparative Study Of The Learning Styles Of Southeast Asian And American Caucasian College Students On Two Seventh-Day Adventist Campuses, Sally Lam-Phoon
Dissertations
Problem. While much research has been conducted on learning style in the United States, no known empirical study has been done to compare the learning styles of Asian and Caucasian students on Seventh-day Adventist campuses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in learning-style preferences between a group of Asian students at Southeast Asia Union College in Singapore and Caucasian students at Andrews University in Michigan.
Method. This study employed the Productivity Environmental Preference Scale to measure the learning styles of the two groups. The data which were computed and analyzed to test seven null hypotheses …
Amalgamation From The Perspective Of College Council: The Case Of The Western Australian College Of Advanced Education, Paige Porter
Amalgamation From The Perspective Of College Council: The Case Of The Western Australian College Of Advanced Education, Paige Porter
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
When considering institutional amalgamations in tertiary education one is reminded of a typical subtitle in introductory anthropology texts: "Man The Problem Solver" (apologies to feminists). What the section usually goes on to discuss is how humans (supposedly unlike "lower" forms of life) use their intelligence to solve, in the first instance, the "problems" of nature, and at later stages the problems that result from human solutions to the problems of nature. Politically imposed tertiary amalgamation policy resembles nothing if not the creation of solutions guaranteed to create problems, the solution of which will create further problems and so on. There …

The Influence Of Model Infant Group Care On Parent/Child Interaction At Home., Carolyn P. Edwards, Mary Ellin Logue, Sandra Loehr, Sanford Roth
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The effects of day care participation on parent-child interaction at home were assessed using a university-based, half-day, high-quality infant-toddler program. Hypotheses concerned whether "child-centered" features of the physical and social environment were carried over by parents to the home. Nineteen matched pairs of center and noncenter children (ages 2-24 months at start) were followed for 8 months. All had employed or student mothers. Methods included brief parent-reported "spot" observations, a videotaped observation of a bathing or feeding routine, and home environment assessments. Parents showed few group differences during the first half of the study period. At study end, however, center …

French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
The recent controversy in France over the new history textbooks based on the reforms promulgated under René Haby in the middle 1970s can serve as a reminder of the many uses such textbooks can have in our civilization classes. In the past ten years the Haby programs have become the symbol for what many observers in France take to be a serious weakening of the teaching of history since the late 1960s. At the primary level, history was joined to geography and the sciences as an activité d'éveil; no longer was it the privileged instrument for fostering national identity as …
