The Female Autism Experience: A Literature Review, Megan Elizabeth Maas Jan 2022

The Female Autism Experience: A Literature Review, Megan Elizabeth Maas

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by communication challenges, difficulties in socialization, and the occurrence of restrictive, repetitive behaviors. Current data in the United States indicates that 1 in 44 children are diagnosed with autism. Males are diagnosed at a ratio of four to one compared to females. Evidence suggests that females with autism present differently than males. Current diagnostic criteria based on typical male presentation of autism may account for underidentification in females with ASD. This literature review explores the experience of females with autism, including diagnosis, differences in behavior, communication, social and emotional skills, and the lived experiences …

Sensory Informed Teaching And The Impact On Student Learning, Rebecca Thavis Jan 2022

Sensory Informed Teaching And The Impact On Student Learning, Rebecca Thavis

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the impact that sensory stimuli have on students with sensory disorders and how this impacts their academic growth. It was hypothesized that sensory impact was a great hindrance for students that suffered from hyper or hypo neurological sensory stimuli processing disorders. However, the impact of sensory disorders proved to be far greater than just an academic relationship, but also social and emotional relations. Once determined, the next step was to find applicable interventions for general education classrooms, as well as special education classrooms, that were fiscally and spatially reasonable. The sensory processing disorders were evaluated and discussed …

Exploring The Effect Of Online Course Design On Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge Transfer And Retention Through Learning Analytics, Yasemin Gülbahar, Mohamed Ibrahim, Rebecca Callaway

Faculty Publications - Curriculum & Instruction

There is a vast amount of data collected on e-learning platforms that can provide insight and guidance to both learners and educators. However, this data is rarely used for evaluation and understanding the learning process. Hence, to fill this gap in the literature this study explored the effect of online course design on students’ transfer and retention of knowledge through learning analytics. The aim was to reveal study behaviours of participants over a short time while exploring their academic performance. Using a mixed method approach, this research is conducted in two different countries in a limited time. The results showed …

Developing A Small Youth Nonprofit Board Of Directors To Support Fundraising And Volunteer Engagement, Blayre C. Penn

Education Projects

Nonprofit organizations that provide services for young people are immense assets within urban communities. These organizations impart mentorship and provide positive activities to enrich the lives of young citizens who may or may not have access to these opportunities provided elsewhere at a cost. However, as noteworthy of a benefit, the management of nonprofits often threatens their sustainability. If the understanding of organizational blind spots regarding volunteer retention, sustainability of funding, and board leadership is lacking, decision-making on strategic planning becomes very difficult (Sand, 2005). This consultancy project explores the best practices for managing a small nonprofit that focuses on …

Toddler Play Preferences And The Teacher’S Role In The Outdoor Play Environment, Keting Chen, Erin E. Hamel

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Direct experience with nature is a primary component of environmental education and especially beneficial for young children. Worlds of Connections Resources

Building a network using wooden blocks demonstrates that some pieces in a network are more important than others. Removing pieces of a network will change the structure, but removing the pieces that are most connected or more foundational to the network will have more significant impacts on the network. In an ecosystem network, the more connected the network, the more robust it is. Think about ecosystems and food webs as networks with varying degrees of robustness depending upon how many connections and kinds of connections they contain (e.g. if there are “hubs” or “key links” in the chain). In an …

Network Science: Genealogy, Worlds Of Connections Sepa

Worlds of Connections Resources

Remember that family trees are a type of network. The network we create helps us understand which traits were passed down and who they came from. While humans can inherit traits like hair color and eye shape, sometimes they can inherit genetic diseases or be more likely to develop health issues because of their genetics. In most cases, inherited traits are based on probability, so tracing family networks can tell us how likely people are to have these types of diseases. When tracing the genealogical flow of relatedness from one generation to the next one or two generations, it is …

Estimation Of Treatment Effects With Multilevel Observational Data Using Deep Neural Networks, Logistic Regression, And Multilevel Modeling: A Propensity Score Approach, Neba Nfonsang Jan 2022

Estimation Of Treatment Effects With Multilevel Observational Data Using Deep Neural Networks, Logistic Regression, And Multilevel Modeling: A Propensity Score Approach, Neba Nfonsang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study used a propensity score approach to estimate treatment effects in a multilevel setting. The propensity score approach involves the estimation of propensity scores for covariate balancing and the estimation of treatment effects. This study aimed at understanding how propensity scores estimated through a simple logistic regression compare with propensity scores estimated through an optimized deep neural networks model. The study also examined how treatment effects estimated with propensity score weights from logistic regression compare with treatment effects estimated with propensity score weights from deep neural networks.

Few causal studies have been conducted in a multi-level setting with observational …

Exploring The Lives Of Parents Of Traditionally Marginalized Gifted Students, Lora Romero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the lived parenting experiences of traditionally marginalized gifted students within the educational setting and at home. For this study, the researcher gathered information from seven parents of traditionally marginalized gifted students and told their stories. Since the families are traditionally marginalized the population consisted of those who have high intelligence and are a part of a historically oppressed racial/ethnic group. The study was developed using the lens of the Critical Race Theory (CRT). Through the CRT, Capper (2015), recognized that many schools analyze the function of race but lack the knowhow of …

Outdoor Early Intervention Services: Current Practices And Future Directions, Tiffany Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Outdoor play is a crucial in supporting child development, resiliency, social skills, creative thinking, adaptability, family growth, and family engagement. Unfortunately, children are spending less time outside because of technology, parent fears, and other factors. Parents who have a child with a disability have even more challenges when it comes to playing outside. Thus, children with disabilities are spending even less time in outdoor environments. Early Intervention (EI) is a program that is designed for infants and toddlers between the ages of zero to three that have developmental delays and/or disabilities. EI uses a family-center approach in natural environments to …

Encouraging Little People’S Big Questions: An Elementary School Teacher’S Guide To Encouraging Philosophical Inquiry In Decision Making, Morgan Flanagan Jan 2022

Encouraging Little People’S Big Questions: An Elementary School Teacher’S Guide To Encouraging Philosophical Inquiry In Decision Making, Morgan Flanagan

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Children serve as natural philosophers. Their innate sense of questioning, in a classroom setting, with the right instruction, can be beneficial to understanding many abstract concepts. This project is a user-friendly elementary school teachers’ guide to encouraging philosophical questions and thoughts in young students. Teachers should be able to utilize the guide as a skeleton in forming their own lesson plans. The guide is not a completed lesson plan, rather an array of activities and literature that can be incorporated into pre-existing units or be used as a tool in creating new ones. Outlines include literature synopsis, overall philosophical themes, …
