An Introductory Course In Summer Field Biology, Virginia Jeffries Jan 1966

An Introductory Course In Summer Field Biology, Virginia Jeffries

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

For more than a quarter of a century, the writer has been sharing science experiences in field biology with students - kindergarten through grade twelve - in the public schools of Iowa. This experience in teaching science to a wide variety of age groups, together with observations of student interests in science over the years have led the writer to believe as do Benton and Werner in their book Principles of Field Biology and Ecology when they say that "The world of nature is too great to encompass in a single book or a single lifetime; but no study is …

Assistants In High School Science, Henry Leroy Becker, Mary Elizabeth Sievert Jan 1966

Assistants In High School Science, Henry Leroy Becker, Mary Elizabeth Sievert

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The modern science programs of today have created increased emphasis upon the laboratory situation. With this increased emphasis on laboratory work, the science teacher must spend many hours preparing for laboratory experiences which will meet the needs of the students enrolled in today's and tomorrow's science courses. In order to meet these needs, what alternatives are available to the science teacher in preparation for a laboratory situation?

Some Concepts Of Earth Science For Junior High, Patricia M. Schwirian Jan 1966

Some Concepts Of Earth Science For Junior High, Patricia M. Schwirian

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The junior high school has been-and still is-the weakest link in the chain of science education. More interest in science is lost during these two or three years than any other period of a child's education. This is grossly unfortunate because children in this age group have the imagination, enthusiasm, and level of maturity which allows them to profit greatly from the excitement and challenge offered in a good science curriculum.

Volunteer Laboratory Assistants In Bscs Biology Program, Lena Keithahn Jan 1966

Volunteer Laboratory Assistants In Bscs Biology Program, Lena Keithahn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

With the introduction of B.S.C.S. Biology and its intense laboratory centered approach into our school curriculum, the need for additional h e l p to check equipment and student findings during class sessions became apparent. The use of volunteer assistants proved to be helpful, not only to the instructor, but also to the student by providing him with an opportunity to be of service to the school and also to carry on supervised research work.

Humane Education Of The Next Generation Of Americans, Stuart Westerlund Jan 1966

Humane Education Of The Next Generation Of Americans, Stuart Westerlund

Education Collection

In the process of education, three major aspects stand out sharply: philosophy, psychology, and evaluation. It is through philosophy of education that we establish goals and objectives. In other words, where are we going? What do we want? What is really important? Without a philosophy we wander aimlessly in the vast desert known as "no man's land." Psychology speaks of methodology, the means whereby we might achieve our goals; it is the instrument by which we hope to achieve our objectives. Without a methodology we are like a ship without a rudder. We may know where we want to go, …

The National Humane Education Center And The Welfare Of Animals, Mel L. Morse Jan 1966

The National Humane Education Center And The Welfare Of Animals, Mel L. Morse

Education Collection

The role of all humane organizations is the prevention of cruelty and, in order to do this, we must be prepared to show a better way. We cannot stand back saying "no" or "you can't do that" unless we are prepared to show why. We must understand that cruelty is not always a sadistic act and one whose perpetrator needs the attention of a psychiatrist. I am sure that there are many cruelty cases that should be handled in such a manner, but not very many of them get or deserve this distinction. Usually we move to correct the problem …
