A Comparative Investigation Of The Affects Of Parental Cooperation And No Known Parental Cooperation In Children’S Reading Skills, Suzanne Dorothea Lorain
A Comparative Investigation Of The Affects Of Parental Cooperation And No Known Parental Cooperation In Children’S Reading Skills, Suzanne Dorothea Lorain
All Master's Theses
Due to the low economic area from which the subjects for this experiment were chosen, many were lacking in environmental experiences which contributed to their growth in reading skills and interests in the primary grades. This experiment was devised as a means to study reading difficulties in children from a low socioeconomic area, while, at the same time, parents were used to help overcome those problems. The main purpose of this study was to compare and contrast improvement in reading interest and reading skills in matched groups of subjects of an experimental and a control group.

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of The Alameda County Oral Communication Program In Listening, James Wiliam Poe Jr.
All Master's Theses
There is concern among educators that students are not as skilled in the area of listening as they could or should be. As a result of this concern an oral communication program was developed in Alameda County, California to improve students' listening skills. It was the purpose of the study to determine the effectiveness of the Alameda County Oral Communication Program in an itinerant speech and hearing program in Central Washington. The study sought to answer the question: 1. Does the use of the Alameda County Oral Communication Program in Listening effect a change in the language skills of public …

The Experimental Use Of Operant Procedures With Language Delayed Children, Scott W. Nielsen
All Master's Theses
It was the purpose of this study: (1) To compare the amount of vocalization produced by each child before the experiment with the amount of vocalization during and after the application of operant conditioning techniques. (2) To compare the variations in the vocalization produced by the children. (3) To explore the possibility of shaping those vocalizations into meaningful words. The study sought to verify the following statement: Utilization of operant conditioning principles will increase the amount and variety of vocalization in language delayed children.
A History Of The Events Leading To The Establishment Of The First State Normal School In America, Harold E. Ring
A History Of The Events Leading To The Establishment Of The First State Normal School In America, Harold E. Ring
All Master's Theses
During the decades of the 1820's and 1830's, educators in this country studied the European schools where the principles of Johann H. Pestalozzi (1746-1827), Friedrick Froebel (1782-1852), and Emanuel Fellenberg (1771-1844) had been put into practice with favorable results. The Prussian normal schools established by Frederick the Great were some of the best in the world. American educators came back with glowing reports of the progress Europeans were making in this direction. By 1838, due to the efforts of James Carter (1795-1849) and Horace Mann (179 6-1859), and because of the generosity of a Boston merchant, the Massachusetts legislature was …
A Descriptive Study Of Certain Characteristics In Which The Language Of A Class Of Third Grade Negro Children Differs From Standard English, Columbus Nelson Sanders
A Descriptive Study Of Certain Characteristics In Which The Language Of A Class Of Third Grade Negro Children Differs From Standard English, Columbus Nelson Sanders
All Master's Theses
Children come to school speaking the language of their speech community. For some children, the language in their speech community is a variety of English that differs from standard English or what may be called "school English." These children may experience great difficulties in speaking standard English. This problem is one of social class dialect rather than regional language variation. The purpose of this study is to describe certain characteristics in which the language of a class of third grade Negro children differs from standard English.
A Developmental Study Of An Extradimensional Shift In Concept Learning, Ingrid I. Simonson
A Developmental Study Of An Extradimensional Shift In Concept Learning, Ingrid I. Simonson
All Master's Theses
The present study was similar to that of Guy et al. (1966), since it was designed to evaluate the hypothesis and cue-conditioning models of concept learning. However, there were three major differences. First, three age groups were tested in an effort to determine whether there were age-related differences in learning strategies. Second, the added cue was placed directly on the stimulus figure rather than in the background surrounding the figure. Third, the stimulus objects were less complex since they represented pictures of animals and articles of clothing instead of geometric designs.

Effects Of Teacher And Pupil Expectancy Upon School Achievement, Wing Jew
Effects Of Teacher And Pupil Expectancy Upon School Achievement, Wing Jew
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The effects of self-fulfilling prophecies have been observed under various situations in the past, but Rosenthal and Jacobson's recent South San Francisco study has probably stimulated increased public and professional interest in the effects of expectations on learning. It was felt that additional research in this area was desirable ·in order to further examine how and to what extent expectancies can influence learning situations.
This study was designed to study the effects of informing randomly selected pupils and their teachers that these particular pupils had greater potential for school success than they had been demonstrating. It was hypothesized that if …

An Investigation Of Seriation And Perception In The Structure And Function Of Intellect In The Educable Mentally Retarded, Frances Wallack Mcfarland
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study is relevant to the potential utility of a developmental approach to the assessment of ability in students designated “Edicable Mentally Retarded”. Piaget’s conceptualization of seriation as an essential component of logical thinking, related to perception, suggested a linkage between dimensions of thinking and imagery, generally treated independently.

A Survey Of Creative Dramatics, Julie Devecchio Baker
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The little princess was merrily playing in the garden with her ball; tossing it up into the air and bounding it down on the ground. As she played she danced around, humming and singing little snatches of tunes to herself. She was completely unaware of the evil-looking creature creeping up behind her. Suddenly, the evil witch stretched out her arms and, with fingers pointing at the little princess she loosed an evil-sounding yell. The little princess looked up first in amazement and then in horror. Then, she yawned sleepily and fell back on the ground fast asleep. The witch then …

The Iowa Academy Of Science As A Directing Influence In Science Education, Robert W. Hanson
The Iowa Academy Of Science As A Directing Influence In Science Education, Robert W. Hanson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The last decade was marked by drastic changes in the studied approach to teaching science and most school subjects. A whole new vocabulary of science education terminology appeared-the process approach, conceptual schemes, Hanson integrated science, audio-tutorial techniques, the multi-media approach, computer-assisted instruction. These and many other phrases can be summed up in the one word innovation, and many educators of the more traditional bent feel a bit uneasy and perhaps defensive about the extent to which innovation is lacking in their teaching.
The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn
The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
"If at first you don't succeed, you are just about average." This flippant statement of a common experience has led to the multi-media approach in an attempt to make the learning of biology for the average sixteen year old who scores between 35 to 89 on the comprehensive test of the ITED more meaningful and successful.
