A Counselor's Integration Of Thomism With The Philosophies Of B.F. Skinner & Albert Ellis, Leonard Alvey
A Counselor's Integration Of Thomism With The Philosophies Of B.F. Skinner & Albert Ellis, Leonard Alvey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Religious counselors tend to neglect theorists who oppose religion. B. F. Skinner and Albert Ellis implicitly and explicitly criticize religion in their published writings. These criticisms are connected with their atheistic philosophies. Thomism is a theistic philosophy endorsed by the Catholic Church. Karl Rahner and Bernard Lonergan have integrated Thomism with contemporary thought. Their works serve as models for this research project--a counselor's integration of Thomism with the philosophies of B. F. Skinner and Albert Ellis.
A counselor can disconnect Skinnerian and Ellisian criticisms of religion from their atheistic philosophies. Viewing the same criticisms in the context of a theistic …

An Interview With Grace Carlson, Vito Perrone
An Interview With Grace Carlson, Vito Perrone
Journal of Teaching and Learning
Grace Carlson began teaching in Nelson County, North Dakota, in 1926. She has served as County Superintendent of Schools since 1951. I first met Grace in 1968 and was impressed by her knowledge of North Dakota and her deep commitments to education. During this past year, as part of a larger bicentennial activity, I interviewed Grace in order to preserve some of her experience for prospective teachers. Portions of the transcript follow.

Statement of the Problem. The problem of this study was to determine if the frequency of home visits made to families enrolled in a home-based early childhood education program was related to changes in parental behavior and student achievement. One hundred twenty low income families who had one or more children between three and five years of age, and who volunteered to participate in the home-based early childhood education program, were selected for the study. The early childhood program consisted of three basic …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Still around are some of us who attended high school through the years 1906-1910. In my case that was in Zanesville, Ohio, which periodically over the years has been portrayed in magazine articles as "the typical American town." In those days high school principals did not seem to be chosen primarily as administrators specially skilled in management. The principal of a school was the principal teacher, supposed to be something of a scholar, often addressed as "professor." He was expected to be familiar with the subject-matter of the curriculum as a whole. If a teacher had to be absent for …

The Relationship Between Body Fat And Physical Well-Being Of Children, Aged Six To Thirteen, As Determined By Physical Activity And Physical Fitness, Paul Sieczkowski
The Relationship Between Body Fat And Physical Well-Being Of Children, Aged Six To Thirteen, As Determined By Physical Activity And Physical Fitness, Paul Sieczkowski
Student Work
Body fat has several implications for an individual's physical well-being. Aside from its functional aspects as an energy reserve and as a thermal insulator, excess body fat has been related to an increased mortality rate (Dublin, 1930). Vitale (1973) and deVries (1974) emphasized that excess fat is associated with many degenerative diseases such as diabetes, gallstones, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Mayer (1953) noted that there might be seasonal changes in the body fat level due to changes in activity level. Johnson, Burke,, and Mayer (1956) traced the onset of obesity of most "late obesity" children to the winter …
