Teaching Map Concepts To Poor Readers, Cynthia J. Meadows
Teaching Map Concepts To Poor Readers, Cynthia J. Meadows
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a concern that children with poor, i.e., below grade level reading ability, have trouble in content area subjects. The subjects of social studies, science, and health are often taught in the elementary grades through the use of textbooks. Because these texts prior to 1979 were written with a readability level at or above the grade level for which the book was designed, the poorer reader cannot read, and therefore learn, the subject matter presented.
Children need knowledge of these content areas to function in today's society. They also need the ability to read to increase their knowledge and …
Energy Education Materials For Elementary School, Marcia Keizer Fraser
Energy Education Materials For Elementary School, Marcia Keizer Fraser
All Master's Theses
The materials created introduce intermediate elementary level children to a selected basic energy vocabulary and to concepts of energy-environment inter-relations. The approach is multi-dimensional, employing a slide tape presentation, posters, charts, and vocabulary cards. Energy concepts and vocabulary are repeated through the various media forms as a means to reinforce learning. The content tone is deliberately positive so that in the process of gaining knowledge about energy issues, children will feel successful, encouraging further achievement in the area of energy education.

An Integrated Listening Skills Program For The Kindergarten Class, Bonita Duggan Diamond
An Integrated Listening Skills Program For The Kindergarten Class, Bonita Duggan Diamond
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study will attempt to develop a Listening Skills Curriculum in the areas of auditory discrimination, auditory sequencing ability, and grammatic completion for the purpose of improving auditory comprehension. These three skills are components of auditory comprehension. Auditory discrimination and auditory sequencing ability have been chosen as two skills to develop in this program because past research indicates that improvement in these skills does correlate with improvement in auditory comprehension. Grammatic completion is a modified form of auditory closure in which the student completes the sentence with the grammatically preferred inflectional ending. It is expected that exercises in this skill …
A Preschool Needs Assessment Research Project, Lynn A. Good
A Preschool Needs Assessment Research Project, Lynn A. Good
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This needs assessment research project concerns itself with the lack of parental involvement in preschool programs. The lack of communication between educators and parents is examined in relation to its effects on the child and the community. One possible way to begin to solve this problem is presented through the use of a survey questionnaire for parents and teachers concerning what each group feels are the primary considerations, or needs, for quality preschool educational programs.
The considerations surveyed resulted from an in depth review of the literature pertaining to major early childhood concerns. This research examined five areas of review; …
A Kindergarten Curriculum Guide In Environmental Education, Lynda H. Leukel
A Kindergarten Curriculum Guide In Environmental Education, Lynda H. Leukel
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The assumptions of this project imply that concepts concerning the relationships among living organisms can be assimilated by the child only if his experiences include exploration of his environment and the opportunity to discover these relationships himself. In order to help him progress, an interested, informed teacher who will encourage and help him is of prime importance.
Because progress needs to be started as early as possible, kindergarten age children will be the focus of this project. Here the school should use the opportunity to begin developing the environmentally aware citizen. Unfortunately, few texts and guides in environmental education have …

A primary objective of the field experience consisted of conducting a feasibility study for the establishment of a Career Education Instructional Cooperative for the high schools within the Crawford Educational Service Region, Illinois.
Major employers, students in each Crawford County high school, and randomly selected parents of county high school students were surveyed as part of the study. The results indicated a need for skilled workers to fill a void in Crawford County businesses and industries. Projections were made by the employers surveyed to 1985. Employers favored the establishment of a Career Education Instructional Cooperative. Positive data were also retrieved …

Enhancing The Incidental Learning Of Emr Children, Robert A. Fox, Anthony F. Rotatori
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Type I incidental learning of mentally retarded children was investigated. Four orienting-instruction conditions and two tasks (two and three dimensions) were used. One orienting-instruction condition was found to be superior for enhancing incidental learning. This task-specific strategy continued to produce the best incidental learning during a 24-hour follow-up session. The results were discussed in terms of recent memory models. Directions for future research were delineated.

Physical Attractiveness - A Source Of Teacher Bias?, M. W. Boyce
Physical Attractiveness - A Source Of Teacher Bias?, M. W. Boyce
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
A person's physical appearance is his personal characteristic most obvious and most accessible to others in social interaction. Despite some social psychologists apparent disinterest in investigating physical attractiveness as an antecedent of liking, there has been a developing body of research which suggests that physical attractiveness is an important social cue used by others as a basis for social evaluation. If, as there appears, there is a physical attractiveness stereotype, it seems plausible to suggest that a child's personal characteristics may influence the way in which an adult evaluates his behaviour. There have been several studies that have looked at …

In order to develop a meaningful vehicle for the project, an original ten-part play was written by the author. It is called: "Journey to the …
Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart
Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The world food deficit has resulted in an expanded effort to find new sources of protein. With significant research efforts directed toward development of oilseed, leaf, fish and single cell concentrates, it is surprising that insects have been almost totally overlooked. They are a natural food for many kinds of animals and they are used widely as food by some human populations, especially in the tropics where they help compensate for the general deficiency in animal proteins, fats and calories. The few biochemical studies done to date indicate that insect protein is of high quality.
