Palestinian Prisoners: Smuggling Freedom, Writing From Captivity, Basil Farraj
Palestinian Prisoners: Smuggling Freedom, Writing From Captivity, Basil Farraj
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article discusses writings by Palestinian political prisoners and the broader body of prison literature situating them as practices of ‘smuggling freedom’ from Israel’s carceral regime, shedding light onto their political and social meaning. Through discussing writings by prisoners, the article points to a long history through which Palestinian prisoners confronted the Israeli regime’s torture and violent practices, and its broader project of eliminating the political nature of captivity. The article argues that prisoners’ writings reveal much about the dynamics of carceral power and violence, and the logic behind the confrontation practices used by prisoners in Palestine and beyond. These …

The Role Of Learned Helplessness On Academic Baseline Levels In Adult Education Students Enrolling In A High School Equivalency Program, Kippie Barnwell Hartcraft
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study was to investigate the relationship between learned helplessness and academic baseline levels among adult students who dropped out of high school and have returned to a high school equivalency program to prepare to take the GED examination. The study controlled for the variables of the age of the student at the time of GED program enrollment, gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. It is not known if, and to what degree, learned helplessness impacts academic baseline levels in reading, mathematics, and language in adult students. Learned helplessness, a maladaptive condition as demonstrated by low …

Investigating The Correlation Between Racially Based Trauma And The Imposter Phenomenon In High-Achieving Black Women, Tarra Lynn Winfield Ray
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study investigates the imposter phenomenon, racially based trauma, and how the two correlate among high-achieving Black women. High achieving for this writing refers to Black women who attend college or graduate school, those in professional positions that require a degree, advanced degree, or professional licensure (i.e., corporate executives, medical doctors, attorneys, mental health clinicians, etc.), and entrepreneurs. Many current studies have focused on the unique and complex experiences that high-achieving Black women face while working to achieve goals and gain success. Many of these women have experienced racially based trauma, and many endorse the simultaneous experiencing of the imposter …

Wild Magic Farms: Increasing Student Engagement And Decreasing Academic Regression In Middle School Extended School Year Through Use Of A Role-Playing Game, Maryanne Cullinan
Educational Studies Dissertations
The Extended School Year (ESY) is a federal program that falls under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Law (2004) as part of Special Education in public schools in the United States. It is intended to help reduce regression in student progress towards Individualized Education Program goals. However, in New Hampshire, ESY struggles with a lack of clear goals, student buy-in and quality engagement. This study examined how a researcher designed role-playing game (RPG) could impact both summer academic regression and student engagement in a middle school ESY. Utilizing i-Ready testing (n=13) data and attendance data (n=9), this study compared …

Curated undergraduate research experiences have been widely used at colleges and universities for decades to build student interest, technical preparation, and confidence in the pursuit of scientific careers. Educators often employ standardized survey instruments to evaluate learning outcomes for research experiences, but many of these assessments consider only technical skill development and career interests and are not rooted in discrete pedagogical theories. As higher education aims to create inclusive and equitable learning experiences for students, we argue that pedagogical assessment tools for undergraduate research experiences need to expand to consider outcomes such as increased science literacy, confidence in relational “soft” …

GDI.

The Laughing Buddha: The Education Of Compassionate Leaders Through Improvisational Play, Belinda Chiu
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
With an urgency to build a generative future, educational systems do not have a choice but to pay attention to how and what we train our future leaders. Yet there is still a gap as leadership studies are often relegated as a “soft” skill, rather than integrated as technical knowledge critical to the holistic effectiveness of a tertiary education. As a result, there is often a disconnect between students immersed in the idealistic bubble of the academy and graduates navigating life outside. Inquiry- and reflective-based methods of contemplative practices may be critical for leaders to avoid short-term, short-sighted decisions that …
The Power Of The Poetry Club, April Vazquez
The Power Of The Poetry Club, April Vazquez
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
Poetry spaces provide a place where young people can express themselves and develop skills like critical thinking, empathy, and creativity. They empower young people, particularly those at the margins of society. I organized an extracurricular poetry club, Yo Misma, with Latina adolescents in which we read the work of ten Latin American women poets. As a result of the experience, club members made connections between the poems and their own lives. Furthermore, reading poems by poets they identified helped the girls to find their own voices, both as readers and writers.

How Assistance Dogs Impact The Academic And Social/Emotional Development Of Students With Disabilities, Elizabeth A. Bloom
How Assistance Dogs Impact The Academic And Social/Emotional Development Of Students With Disabilities, Elizabeth A. Bloom
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review explores the impact of using assistance dogs in special education to address social-emotional development and academic success for students with various disabilities. The review evaluated dog-assisted interventions, a form of animal-assisted therapy, increasingly used in schools, libraries, hospitals, and higher education settings. The research findings reported positive outcomes when animals were used, such as increased motivation, reduced anxiety, and improved reading skills (Bassette and Taber- Doughty (2013), Goodmon et al. (2021), Herderson et al. (2020). More rigorous, long-term research across diverse student populations and disability categories is needed to address the long-term benefits of animal- assisted therapy. …

Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Minnesota's Pseo Students: A Qualitative Exploration, Joel Edward Olson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In my dissertation, Understanding the Lived Experiences of Minnesota's PSEO Students: A Qualitative Exploration, I explored students’ experiences of the transition from high school to college via Minnesota’s PSEO program. As a Bethel University faculty member with 19 years of prior experience as a high school English teacher, I have watched the number of PSEO students increase year after year from both sides of the secondary/post-secondary divide. This subtle undoing of the traditional high school to college progression significantly impacts not only the economic outlook for public high schools and colleges, but it also significantly impacts the educational experiences and …

Interactive Read Aloud Planning Template For The Story, The Letter From The Book Frog And Toad Are Friends, Lauren Dehmer, David Wolff
OER Materials
This is a read-aloud planning template for the story The Letter from the book Frog and Toad are Friends, which holds five stories. The goal of the assignment is to create an effective read-aloud. Research supports these as they can expose children to new words and language structures (Burkins & Yates, 2021). Cunningham et al. (2023) also explain interactive read-alouds as a way to “immerse students in rich content.” The author was given a list of stories from the anthology, The 20th Century Children’s Book Treasury: Picture Books and Stories to Read Aloud, from instructor Dr. David Wolff, who …

An Exploration Of Brainstorming Methods And Their Influence On Creativity In Secondary Visual Arts, Melody K. Shryock
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the impact of structured brainstorming methods on creativity in visual arts among middle school students, a period marked by the shift from concrete to abstract thinking. Creativity often declines during adolescence due to social awareness and limited exposure to creative strategies. Literature was reviewed on how techniques like SCAMPER and Mind Mapping help students overcome design fixation and develop original artistic solutions. Drawing on historical and contemporary perspectives, the research emphasizes the value of divergent thinking, student autonomy, and a supportive classroom environment. Challenges in assessing artistic originality are discussed, including the subjective nature of evaluation and …

The Effect Of Covid-19 Lockdowns And Social Isolation On Adolescence, Madeleine J. Bakken
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents around the world were impacted by social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Students experienced sudden school closures and isolation from classmates resulting in increased screen time, the erosion of social skills, lower academic motivation, and a period of unstructured and unfamiliar learning (Hong et al., 2022; Kannan & Veazie, 2023; Leventhal & Morishta, 2024; Menzies et al., 2024; Warford, 2019). Current research is working to measure the impact and severity of these factors. Early findings suggest that students are academically and emotionally behind where their predecessors were pre-COVID (Menzies et al. 2023; NWEA Connection, 2024). Educators and mental …
