University Publications - Historical
Otterbein University celebrated the 60th anniversary of its founding in 1907. As part of the celebration alumnus, former president, and long-serving professor of languages and philosophy (1870-1904) Dr. Henry Garst published the first history of the school, simply titled History of Otterbein University. Drawing on both print resources and his own personal recollections, this book reviews the struggles in the United Brethren Church to establish the school, the hardship in the pioneer days including crushing debts and the destruction of the original main building, and the triumph of the students, alumni, and faculty and administration in bringing Otterbein out of …

The intention of this paper is not to keep nagging at the student body to show more school spirit, but by creating an interest in the various departments of college activity, it is hoped that a natural growth of college enthusiasm will spring up to supplant the lethargy we …

Rev. Lewis Bookwalter, D.D., Inauguration - Eleventh President, Otterbein University
Presidential Inaugurations
President Bookwalter demonstrated that strong leadership can produce significant accomplishments even in a short presidency. Trustees appointed him after he had extensive experience in United Brethren college presidencies, two years at Westfield College (IL) and ten at Western College (IA). As Trustees intended, he spent most of his time with off campus constituencies. In four years, he increased enrollment from 401 students to 551. Three Otterbein fraternities formed, without University approval.
President Bookwalter's remarkable fund raising and construction record included Cochran Hall (1907, $31,000), Carnegie Library (1908, $40,000), Lambert Hall (music, 1909, $28,000), and a heating plant. He resigned in …
