The Economic Impact Of Changes In Mineral Production In The State Of New Mexico: 1975-2000 (2), University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research

BBER Publications

This report examines the macro-level economic impact of expected changes in New Mexico's energy-mineral sectors, forecasting shifts in total gross output, employment, and state tax revenues from 1975 to 2000. Developed using a customized 50-sector input-output model, the study models the systemic, multi-industry economic contractions linked to projected oil and gas production declines, while detailing the corresponding growth offsets driven by expanding uranium mining, coal extraction, and proposed coal gasification projects.

Logrolling And Budget Allocation Games, Martin Shubik, Ludo Van Der Heyden Feb 1977

Logrolling And Budget Allocation Games, Martin Shubik, Ludo Van Der Heyden

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we approach the concept of logrolling by examining a voting system where choices are made among sets of competing projects as a game in characteristic function form. We translate the question: “Will there be prices for votes on different projects which clear the market?” into a different, but equivalent question: “Is the formal game we have described a market game?” We show that in general the answer is no, unless all voters have virtually the same preferences.

Recreation-Based Lodging Business In A Minnesota Resort Area, Gary C. Meyer Jan 1977

Recreation-Based Lodging Business In A Minnesota Resort Area, Gary C. Meyer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Personal interviews with owners or managers of privately-owned outdoor recreation-based lodging enterprises in Hubbard County, Minnesota, were used to analyze this industry. Most enterprises are small, operated on a seasonal and part-time basis, and owned by individuals or families who formerly resided in other areas. It is suggested that non-economic goals are commonly the most important contributors to the decision to enter this segment of the lodging industry.

Is Classical Doctrine Relevant To Contemporary Economic Problems, S. M. Kahng, Shelley Kari

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Classical theory, especially as propounded by Adam Smith 200 years ago, is examined for applicability to contemporary economic problems. The broad scope of classical concepts is suggested as a means of adding relevance to more restricted modern approaches.

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1977

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure for me to speak this morning to this dynamic group of young farm families. Those of .us who were actively involved in farming a few years back are continually amazed at the talent that has come along" to succeed us. Farming has indeed changed more than we realize. That is not a new discovery, for thousands of articles have been written about the technological revolution in agriculture. But relatively little attention has been given to the change in farm families themselves. without doubt, the quality level of young farmers and their wives - whether it be …

Food And Foreign Affairs: The Role Of Agricultural Trade Policy In International Commerce And Domestic Relations, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Until that now famous series of Russian grain sales took place in 1972 agricultural policy in the United States had begun to lose its sex appeal! It had its challenges in the drought and depression years of the '30s, and again during World War II, but in both those cases the concern was whether we could produce enough for our needs. In the earlier of those decades, we had an additional preoccupation with the economic survival of our farming communities. Farm families had to.be strong in every sense of the word to live through the '30s.

Do Foreign Companies Pay Higher Wages Than Their Local Counterparts In Malaysian Manufacturing?, David Lim Jan 1977

Do Foreign Companies Pay Higher Wages Than Their Local Counterparts In Malaysian Manufacturing?, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

This paper shows that foreign companies pay higher wages than their local counterparts in Malaysian manufacturing. Step-wise regression analysis shows that this is due to two factors. The first, and perhaps the more important, is the greater capital intensity of the production processes used by foreign companies. The second is their tendency to pay wages that they consider, or that are considered to be, commensurate with the wages that they pay in their home countries. This may be called the demonstration effect of wage remuneration in less developed countries.

Actual, Desired And Full Levels Of Capital Utilisation In Malaysian Manufacturing, David Lim Jan 1977

Actual, Desired And Full Levels Of Capital Utilisation In Malaysian Manufacturing, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

This paper shows that capital utilisation in West Malaysian manufacturing, though higher than that in other less developed countries, still leaves capital plant idle for a considerable proportion of the total available time. These findings, based on a modified McGraw‐Hill measure and on the Winston time‐measure of capital utilisation, therefore calls into question the wisdom of an industrial investment incentive programme which aims primarily at maximising the volume of capital expenditure, and which pays no attention at all to the level of utilisation of the existing stock of capital.
