Another Look At The Effect Of Capital Subsidies On Capital-Intensity, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

In an earlier paper in this journal, I examined the effect that the provision of capital subsidies, in the form of tax holidays whose duration depends on the level of capital investment, had on the capital-intensity of manufacturing in Peninsular Malaysia. The following basic equations were estimated, by ordinary least squares, for twelve industry-groups for 1972...

An Approximation Method Of Calculating The Present Worth Of Nonintegrable Cash Flow Patterns, Brian Almond, Donald S. Remer Jan 1981

An Approximation Method Of Calculating The Present Worth Of Nonintegrable Cash Flow Patterns, Brian Almond, Donald S. Remer

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

An approximation method is provided for calculating the present worth of nonintegrable continuous cash flows that have common industrial economic applications. Two limiting cases of particular use in engineering screening analyses are given for each model. Practical examples are presented to illustrate the application of the cash flow models to manpower reductions due to computerized process control and to cash flows for a pollution-abatement facility.

Core Theory With Strongly Convex Preferences, Robert M. Anderson Jan 1981

Core Theory With Strongly Convex Preferences, Robert M. Anderson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider economies with preferences drawn from a very general class of strongly convex preferences, closely related to the class of convex (but intransitive and incomplete) preferences for which Mas-Colell proved the existence of competitive equilibria [13]. We prove a strong core limit theorem for sequences of such economies with a mild assumption on endowments (the largest endowment is small compared to the total endowment) and a uniform convexity condition. The results extend corresponding results in Hildenbrand’s book [8]. The proof, which is based on our earlier result for economies with more general preferences [2], is elementary.

The Dependent Development Of Brazil: 1822-1980, Robin Guy-Michel Romans Jan 1981

The Dependent Development Of Brazil: 1822-1980, Robin Guy-Michel Romans

Masters Theses

This thesis is an attmept to define the dependence contextual approach. This approach argues that national development is an international problem that should be studies from an international perspective. It also asserts that development and underdevelopment are functionally linked (i.e., the development of one nation may be a cause of the underdevelopment of another and vice versa).

This approach is utilized to examine the national development of Brazil since independence in 1822 to 1980. Dependence writers propose that Brazil’s national development can be categorized into three stages. Those are 1) the era of export economy (1822-1930); 2) the period of …

A Simulation Games Approach To Suppliment The Teaching Of Basic Economics Concepts In Elementary School, David L. Spies Jan 1981

A Simulation Games Approach To Suppliment The Teaching Of Basic Economics Concepts In Elementary School, David L. Spies

All Graduate Projects

A year-long simulation game was created to facilitate the teaching of basic economics in a sixth and seventh grade middle school. The game could be adapted to implementation at lower grade levels. The students built two, table-top cities. They established a money system and were paid for positive behavior and effort. With their earned income and with loans from a bank, they purchased land, built homes, invested in business franchises, engaged in trade, and worked collectively to finance and build government projects and services. Discussion questions and evaluation tests were devloped, based upon the curriculum guidelines established by the Joint …

Women And Handicrafts: Myth And Reality, Jasleen Dhamija Jan 1981

Women And Handicrafts: Myth And Reality, Jasleen Dhamija

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDS reviews handicrafts as a means of providing income to women. In some instances, crafts are a solid source of income and can also provide women with a link to their own cultural heritage. In most instances, however, crafts production concentrates women in an area that is labor intensive and exploitative, providing a meager income for long hours of work. Handicrafts can be a means of increasing income for women in some settings, but only under the conditions outlined in this report, since crafts are specialized activities which have limited markets and offer limited potential as a …

Property Tax Equity: A Study Of Bemidji, Minnesota, L. E. Johnson, Robert D. Ley Jan 1981

Property Tax Equity: A Study Of Bemidji, Minnesota, L. E. Johnson, Robert D. Ley

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The paper seeks to evaluate the equity of property tax assessments in a rural northern Minnesota area. Criteria of both vertical and horizontal equity were examined in terms of the ability to pay and benefits measures of the intra-decile relationships. In addition, other variables affecting intra-decile horizontal equity such as age and lakeshore location were considered. The data upon which the results were based were drawn from random sampling of 1000 households in the R-31 school district at Bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota. The sample represented 20 percent of all such households. A total of 216 households responded to a questionnaire …

Duopoly With Differentiated Products And Entry Barriers, Kofi O. Nti, Martin Shubik Jan 1981

Duopoly With Differentiated Products And Entry Barriers, Kofi O. Nti, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Product differentiated duopoly with a potential entrant facing a single period fixed cost entry barriers is modeled as a noncooperative game. In addition to characterizing the equilibrium solutions and relating them to entry costs and product differentiation, a comparison of price and quantity competition shows that entry conditions are qualitatively sensitive to the strategic variables used in a given industry. Quantity competition appears to be more favorable for entry than price competition. The use of threats and other exclusionary tactics, such as limit pricing, decisively determine the outcome when entry costs are moderate.
