Stress And Today's Working Woman, Tommie Mae Byers
Stress And Today's Working Woman, Tommie Mae Byers
Theses
The eighth wonder of the world is fast becoming the great American job machine The employment rate has declined in most industrial nations while 20 million jobs have been created in the U. S. during the past 10 years. The principal reason for this rise in job placements is the large influx of women into the labor force.
Two-thirds of the jobs created over the past decade have been seized by women. The post-industrial environment which has produced an extensive number of service-type businesses has substantially opened the job market for women. Financial experts will contend that an expanding labor …

Regional Variations In The Utilization Of Labor: Analysis Of Employment-Population Ratios For Selected Years, 1970-1984, A. Maureen O'Brien
Regional Variations In The Utilization Of Labor: Analysis Of Employment-Population Ratios For Selected Years, 1970-1984, A. Maureen O'Brien
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Consideration of the movement of jobs and people can highlight regional variations in economic performance. The employment-population ratio reflects these movements and measures the success of the economy at providing jobs. To investigate the uneven inter- and intraregional distribution of the effects of recession and recovery, this study compares employment-population ratios in the major regions of the nation, the state of Minnesota, and northeastern Minnesota with national trends. The results indicate that, relative to developments in the nation and the state, the recent recession of 1980-1982 was more severe and the recovery has been slower m northeastern Minnesota. The ability …

A Profile Of The Minnesota Angler, Wayne A. Jesswein, James A. Skurla, Patricia Q. Dalton, Michael C. Larson
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
As part of an assessment of the bait leech industry and its market potential, a survey of 5,000 Minnesota anglers was conducted in the spring of 1985. Although the survey instrument was designed to derive information about the bait leech (Nephelopsis obscura) and its use, it also included questions about angler characteristics, preferences, and fishing activities for the 1984 fishing season. Responses to these questions produced a profile of the Minnesota angler. Our survey results show that the typical Minnesota angler is male, middle-aged, has a relatively high household income, and has fished for many years. He fishes from a …

Applied Economics Faculty Publications
This publication estimates 1987 costs, returns, and soil loss information for selected crops grown under alternative tillage systems in the 19- to 24-inch rainfall area (eastern region) of Whitman County, Washington (see map below). Production costs, returns, and profitability measures are calculated for winter wheat under conventional, minimum, and no-tillage schemes. The same three performance measures are calculated for dry peas, lentils, spring barley, and summer fallow-rapeseed under conventional tillage. Relative soil losses are also estimated for alternative tillage practices and crop rotations. The specific crop rotations evaluated are: (1) dry peas (CT) - winter wheat (CT); (2) dry peas …

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
I would like to speak to you this morning about the future of the world trading system. It seems appropriate, on the GATT's 40th birthday, to recognize its past achievements while also looking forward to its future-challenges. We must together develop a vision of the GATT that will serve the needs of the twenty-first century. Forty years ago, the legacy of a great depression and a world war was high import duties and restrictive quotas. World trade had shriveled. Recognizing this sorry state of affairs, concerned countries came together to establish a mechanism for reducing trade barriers and for carrying …

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
I am grateful to the Shimoda Conference for inviting me to address the issue of U.S.-Japanese trade. This is an important event, coming at a time when trade between our two countries is playing a more significant role in our overall relations than ever before. In some ways , individual trade issues are threatening to overshadow our long relationship as friends and allies. This must not be allowed to happen. Japan and the united States have too much at stake to let transitory problems come between us. We are the world's two largest free economies. We work together effectively to …

Measuring Market Power As Competition Over Time, Michael L. Marlow, George E. Wright
Measuring Market Power As Competition Over Time, Michael L. Marlow, George E. Wright
Economics
This paper suggests that the empirical measurement of market structure, particularly the reliance on concentration indexes as an indicator of noncompetitive market power, does not adequately reflect recent advances in theory. This paper integrates the literature of the interaction between market structure and firm behavior with dynamic measures of structure. Our estimation for the savings and loan industry suggests that continued application of traditional static measures in market structure-performance studies are apt to be misleading. We call for more investigation into measures of dynamic structure.
