The Legal Studies Of Women Employees, Yi-Ling Lin May 1990

The Legal Studies Of Women Employees, Yi-Ling Lin

Theses

Discrimination against women in the workplace has always existed, but because few women in the United stated worked until the Second World War, it was not regarded as a major issue before then. Although Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbids employer and union discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, many available studies still showed that most women experienced discrimination in employment, especially in salary and promotion. In addition, there were a growing number of cases of sexual harassment in the workplace. This study was concerned with the implementation and effectiveness of legislation …

Japanese Management Techniques And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 (Title Vii), Doris S. Mao May 1990

Japanese Management Techniques And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 (Title Vii), Doris S. Mao

Theses

Japanese management techniques have been praised for its high efficiency and quality output. However, when these same techniques are transplanted in the United States, the results have been less than desirable. This thesis will investigate how the nature of the Japanese management system lends itself to employment discriminations which have resulted in court cases against Japanese firms in US.

The thesis will firstly identify the unique characteristics of Japanese management techniques and the reasons behind the efficient operations of Japanese firms. Since the Japanese management system is based on a paternal concept which identifies the corporation as the "second family", …

Towards An Understanding Of Women's Status In The Labor Force, Despina Papageorgiou May 1990

Towards An Understanding Of Women's Status In The Labor Force, Despina Papageorgiou

Theses

The thesis examines the status of women in the labor force from the economic and sociological point of view. It explores both the occupational segregation and the differences in earnings.

None of the existing theories provides a sufficient explanation either of the causes of the problems, or of the effects of women's position in the labor force. Each study has its limitations.

The previous studies failed to predict the dynamic effects of the changes that rapidly take place in the business environment and the increasing demand for highly qualified and experienced professionals. These changes facilitated women's entrance to top-management positions …

Outplacement Services : A Search For The Tools And Strategies That Improve Organizational Effectiveness, Geri P. Stowers May 1990

Outplacement Services : A Search For The Tools And Strategies That Improve Organizational Effectiveness, Geri P. Stowers

Theses

If outplacement is considered a necessity in this age of continuous mergers, acquisitions, and downsizing, then why do most companies find it difficult to utilize these services for all employees?

This thesis will assess previous research on outplacement and evaluate the reasons for limited use. A four page questionnaire containing nineteen questions was mailed to forty-two pharmaceutical and related industries. The survey questions focused on why and how these industries utilize outplacement services. A comparison study was done of the research versus what the pharmaceutical industries are actually practicing.

The results of the study revealed that most companies really do …

Proposed Organization And Detailed Table Of Contents - 1990, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

For many years copyright was a backwater of the law. Perceived as an esoteric and narrow field beset by hypertechnical formalities, the discipline and its practitioners were largely isolated from scholarly and case law developments in other areas. There were exceptions of course. Well before the explosion of intellectual property litigation in the last twenty years, persons such as Zcharia Chaffee Jr. and Judge Learned Hand brought a wealth of learning and a broad perspective to copyright.

Long-Range Planning Cost Model For Support Of Future Space Missions By The Deep Space Network, J. S. Sherif, Donald S. Remer, H. R. Buchanan May 1990

Long-Range Planning Cost Model For Support Of Future Space Missions By The Deep Space Network, J. S. Sherif, Donald S. Remer, H. R. Buchanan

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A simple model is suggested to do long-range planning cost estimates for Deep Space Network (DSP) support of future space missions. The model estimates total DSN preparation costs and the annual distribution of these costs for long-range budgetary planning. The cost model is based on actual DSN preparation costs from four space missions: Galileo, Voyager (Uranus), Voyager (Neptune), and Magellan. The model was tested against the four projects and gave cost estimates that range from 18 percent above the actual total preparation costs of the projects to 25 percent below. The model was also compared to two other independent projects: …

Draft Of New Versus Old Authors - 1990, Wendy J. Gordon May 1990

Draft Of New Versus Old Authors - 1990, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

Virtually all the issues canvassed above embody the tension that exists in seeking to honor the interests of two generations of creators. For example, the essay has discussed the need for new adaptive artists to have a copyright in their own productions and the dangers that the "subconscious copying rule" poses to new creators, particularly in an age of ubiquitous media.

Commercial Gentrification: An Exploratory Case Study In Broad Ripple, Indiana, Stephen Ronald Degoosh May 1990

Commercial Gentrification: An Exploratory Case Study In Broad Ripple, Indiana, Stephen Ronald Degoosh

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study investigates the existence of a commercial form of gentrification. Seventeen characteristics of residential gentrification--developed empirically by researchers of that process--are advanced as working hypotheses and tested in Broad Ripple, Indiana. Methodology includes a questionnaire, direct interviews, and various other data sources. The research concludes that commercial gentrification exists, and is a private-market process which expands via contagious spatial diffusion. The study area was one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, had a unique physical character, was in a favorable location for commercial activity, was accessible to its market, contained sound, available, and affordable structures, and experienced a rapid increase …

Voting By Committees, Salvador Barberà, Hugo Sonnenschein, Lin Zhou May 1990

Voting By Committees, Salvador Barberà, Hugo Sonnenschein, Lin Zhou

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Problems of social choice frequently take the following form. There are n voters and a set K = (1,2,…, k ) of objects. The voters must choose a subset of K . We define a class of voting schemes called voting by committees. The main result of the paper is a characterization of voting by committees, which is the class of all voting schemes that satisfy voter sovereignty and non-manipulability on the domain of separable preferences. This result is analogous to the literature on the Groves and Clarke scheme in that it characterizes all of the non-manipulable voting schemes on …

Further Evidence On The Great Crash, The Oil Price Shock, And The Unit Root Hypothesis, Eric Zivot, Donald W.K. Andrews May 1990

Further Evidence On The Great Crash, The Oil Price Shock, And The Unit Root Hypothesis, Eric Zivot, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Recently Perron (1989) has carried out tests of the unit root hypothesis against the alternative hypothesis of trend stationarity with a break in the trend occurring at the Great Crash of 1929 or at the 1973 oil price shock. His analysis covers the Nelson-Plosser macroeconomic data series as well as a post-war quarter real GNP series. His tests reject the unit root null hypothesis for most of the series. This paper takes issue with the assumption used by Perron that the Great Crash and the oil price shock can be treated as exogenous events. A variation of Perron’s test is …

Economic Performance, Voting, And Political Support: A Unified Approach, Henry W. Chappell Jr. May 1990

Economic Performance, Voting, And Political Support: A Unified Approach, Henry W. Chappell Jr.

Faculty Publications

A presidential vote function and a presidential approval ratings function are jointly estimated for U.S. post-war observations. The estimation technique treats the two equations as seemingly unrelated regressions with unequal numbers of observations. Cross-equation restrictions implying that voters and poll respondents use identical standards in judging the economic performance of incumbents are imposed and tested. Estimates show that both votes and approval ratings are influenced by GNP growth and inflation. The results suggest that poll respondents are more inflation averse than voters; however, tests of this hypothesis are not conclusive.

Dislocated Worker Human Capital Depreciation And Recovery, Kevin Hollenbeck May 1990

Dislocated Worker Human Capital Depreciation And Recovery, Kevin Hollenbeck

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Previous studies have estimated the "human capital depreciation" of women re-entering the work force after voluntary, lengthy interruptions. Those studies have found reduced real wages and furthermore the decrease is positively related to the length of the interruption. Upon re-entry, however, real wages grow rapidly as human capital is restored. This paper develops a model of the wage histories of dislocated workers. Similar to labor force re-entrants, those dislocated workers who become re-employed would experience wages below their final wage prior to dislocation and the decrease should be associated with the length of dislocation. However, the model suggests that since …

Tourism Dependency And Its Correlation To Selected Socioeconomic Indicators In Utah, Diane S. Gooch May 1990

Tourism Dependency And Its Correlation To Selected Socioeconomic Indicators In Utah, Diane S. Gooch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper investigates the relationship between tourism and well being, or quality-of-life, within eighteen counties in Utah. To evaluate the relationship, comparisons of the counties' differing levels of tourism versus their levels of welfare are necessary. To make these comparisons, three basic steps were followed. First, a social ordering model was derived. The proposed social ordering model was based upon Maslow's theory of the hierarchy of human needs. By utilizing his theory, both economic and noneconomic indicators were identified, and a basis was provided upon which to judge the differing positions of well-being. Factor analysis was applied to this model …

Production And Inefficiency, Arunava Bhattacharyya May 1990

Production And Inefficiency, Arunava Bhattacharyya

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The overall purpose of this three-part dissertation is to specify and estimate various components of inefficiency in the production and profit-generating processes. Flexibility in inefficiency-measurement techniques is introduced using stochastic functional forms to overcome the restrictions of the simplifying assumptions used in previous studies. In addition, the profit function approach is used to measure firm specific inefficiency and to view profit inefficiency in the multiple output context. Empirical application of each approach is also attempted. Application of the measurement of the inefficiency component in the first two essays is made using data taken from Indian agriculture. The multiple output model …

A National Survey Of Enterprise Budget Development And Use By The Extension Service, Douglas W. Eck May 1990

A National Survey Of Enterprise Budget Development And Use By The Extension Service, Douglas W. Eck

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis investigates the development and use of viii agricultural enterprise budgets. An enterprise is a single crop or livestock commodity, and enterprise budgets are valuable management tools. They serve as the basic building blocks of complete farm planning.

Two separate surveys gathered information from the Extension Service concerning the use and development of enterprise budgets. Analysis of the survey results identified the most common methods used to create enterprise budgets as well as factors that contribute to their use.

A regression analysis was performed to determine the factors influencing the number of times county agents directly refer to published …

The United States Postal Service: A Government Corporation Requiring Changes: Past, Present, Future, Brian Harper '90

Honors Projects

This project determines the cost of maintaining the postal service currently. It explores whether this cost is justifiable on the grounds of "binding the Nation together" or if these costs are "impairing the overall value of such service to the people". Whether these costs are viewed as reasons for continued postal deficits or seen as the need for radical changes in the structure and operation of the postal service (even to the point of creating a private corporation from it) will determine the future course of action in regard to it.

Estimating The Risk Of Third World Debt, Jane Chadesh '90 Apr 1990

Estimating The Risk Of Third World Debt, Jane Chadesh '90

Honors Projects

In August 1982, Mexico announced that it was unable to meet its debt obligations then falling due. Since this announcement more than 40 countries have been forced to reschedule on debt owed to commercial banks. Commercial banks have been criticized for blindly providing the lesser developed countries (LDCs) more credit and exposing themselves to more and more risk. For example, six months prior to Mexico's announcement that it could not meet its debt obligations, Mexico had been granted 6.4 billion dollars in new loans to make a total of 84 billion dollars in loans that needed to be rescheduled. If …

Tests For Parameter Instability And Structural Change With Unknown Change Point, Donald W.K. Andrews Apr 1990

Tests For Parameter Instability And Structural Change With Unknown Change Point, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper considers tests of parameter instability and structural change with unknown change point. The results apply to a wide class of parametric models including models that satisfy maximum likelihood type regularity conditions and models that are suitable for estimation by generalized method of moments procedures. The paper considers likelihood ratio and likelihood ratio like tests, as well as asymptotically equivalent Wald and Lagrange multiplier tests. Each test implicitly uses an estimate of change point. Tests of both “pure” and “partial” structural change are discussed.

Cooter And Rappoport On The Normative, John B. Davis Apr 1990

Cooter And Rappoport On The Normative, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

In a recent examination of the origins of ordinal utility theory in neoclassical economics, Robert D. Cooter and Peter Rappoport argue that the ordinalist revolution of the 1930s, after which most economists abandoned interpersonal utility comparisons as normative and unscientific, constituted neither unambiguous progress in economic science nor the abandonment of normative theorizing, as many economists and historians of economic thought have generally believed (Cooter and Rappoport, 1984). Rather, the widespread acceptance of ordinalism, with its focus on Pareto optimality, simply represented the emergence of a new neoclassical research agenda that, on the one hand, defined economics differently than had …

Linear And Nonlinear Appraisal Models, Billie Ann Brotman Apr 1990

Linear And Nonlinear Appraisal Models, Billie Ann Brotman

Faculty Articles

In this article, the author uses nonlinear models to forecast the value of four important housing characteristics. The article explains, for example, that each additional bedroom does not add a set incremental dollar figure to the value of a house. The results suggest that nonlinear models predict housing values better than linear ones.

The Role Of The Court Of Justice In European Integration, Frances M. Jacobson Apr 1990

The Role Of The Court Of Justice In European Integration, Frances M. Jacobson

History Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the role of the Court of Justice in the major issues of European integration: dismantling technical barriers to the free flow of goods, protecting human rights within the European Community, and facilitating the free movement of capital, people and services. Success or failure of the Court is measured by whether the member states have implemented its rulings and whether the rulings have aided or hindered the development of a European internal market.

Specific actions of the Court of Justice are analyzed and placed within the context of European integration. The study begins with the European Coal and …
