Capital Utilisation Of Local And Foreign Establishments In Malaysian Manufacturing, David Lim Jan 1976

Capital Utilisation Of Local And Foreign Establishments In Malaysian Manufacturing, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

It is often argued that foreign firms operating in less developed countries have greater X-efficiency than their local counterparts. However, little empirical evidence has been presented to substantiate this claim. This paper attempts to fill part of this gap, first, by presenting data on the level of capital utilisation in Malaysian and foreign firms in Malaysian manufacturing and, second, by testing the importance of X-efficiency in determining differences in the utilisation levels of the two categories of firms...

Economic Imperialism And Oligopolization Of Trade In The Gold Coast: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Jan 1976

Economic Imperialism And Oligopolization Of Trade In The Gold Coast: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article will deal with the mechanisms of the economic takeover of the Gold Coast, between approximately 1885 and 1939. Two aspects of the takeover are dealt with: the progressive oligopolization of trading, shipping, and banking in the colony, and the influence which oligopolistic British firms exerted on government policy. The oligopolization resulted in the underdevelopment of the African trading class and its inability to develop into a genuine capitalist class; while the pursuance of a government policy dedicated to maintaining Ghana's role as a peripheral import-export economy resulted in the internal economic underdevelopment of the colony.

Hyman P. Minsky Archive

There are four versions of this paper given here. The first, some two years earlier than the other three, was prepared for the 1975 ASSA Conference and the Society of Government Economists, December 29, 1975. The second two versions, almost identical, were prepared for publication. They appeared in March/April 1977 issue of Challenge, and in the Winter, 1977 issue of the Nebraska Journal of Economics and Business. The archives also had the fourth version, differing only slightly from the published versions, that had no firm date.

Effects Of State And Federal Aid To Education, Taxes And Other Socio-Economic Factors On Certain Housing Values In Nebraska, Wallace W. Decatur

Student Work

There have been many studies, papers, articles, and theories which attempt to explain the effect of taxation on real estate values. Occasionally, someone will attempt to correlate some new, here-to-fore unrelated, factor to real estate values. The new factors are often utilized alone or in conjunction with previous study.

Stages In Corporate Stability And The Risks Of Corporate Failure, Richard C. Edwards Jun 1975

Stages In Corporate Stability And The Risks Of Corporate Failure, Richard C. Edwards

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Few would deny that the U.S. economy is today dominated by huge corporations. Much recent writing has proposed that these corporations form a stable and monopolistic (or oligopolistic) "core" around which a more competitive "peripheral" sector exists. Firms in the core are said to be "eternal," while firms in the periphery demonstrate the mortality and high turnover expected in competitive industries. In another context, Paul Baran and Paul Sweezy emphasized the permanence of big corporations when they noted:

The real capitalist today is not the individual businessman but the corporation. .. . The giant corporation of today is an engine …

Private Pensions And The Free Market, John Louis Dobra May 1975

Private Pensions And The Free Market, John Louis Dobra

Dissertations and Theses

In light of the retirement phenomena, the development and utilization of private pensions may be viewed as a market response based on individual and collective recognition of the need to plan to finance retirement from the labor force. This market response however, is shown to have produced a profusion of independent differential pension schemes which may vary with respect to their administrative mechanisms, the type and adequacy of benefits paid, the level at which contributions are made to the plan by participants and the basis of these contributions, and the adequacy of funding. As a result, it is not only …

A Statistical & Cartographic Analysis Of The Size-Distribution Of Retail Grocery Stores In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Luke Hall

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution of retail grocery stores in Bowling Green, Kentucky using the formal element of store size as a controlling theme. This purpose was behaviorally accomplished through a cartographic analysis of the city wide arrangement and a statistical analysis measuring the degree and intensity of selected variables. A survey of pertinent literature was undertaken to discover locational trends and to uncover sixteen specific variables suggested to provide association with grocery store distribution. One general and six specific hypotheses were presented! all were rejected. The cartographic displays did, however, yield promising similarities …

A Comparison Of Economic, Demographic And Social Characteristics Of Migrants And Nonmigrants Of A Given Age Cohort Of Graduating Seniors Of Star Valley High School, 1946, 1947, Douglas D. Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The hypothesis that migration from rural areas of declining population is selective of young, well-educated, achievement-oriented persons was tested on a cohort of graduating seniors from Star Valley (Wyoming) High School.

The 132 living members of the senior classes of 1946 and 1947 served as the population of study. The cohort approach was used to control such variables as age, high school education, rural area of origin and socio- cultural background.

Members of the population were located in their current places of residence through a number of tracking methods including checking high school reunion lists, contacting relatives, high school officials, …

The Effect Of Right-To-Work Laws On Unionization In The United States, H. Craig Petersen, Keith Lumsden Jan 1975

The Effect Of Right-To-Work Laws On Unionization In The United States, H. Craig Petersen, Keith Lumsden

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

State right-to-work laws, the subject of considerable controversy in the industrial relations field, typically state that no person will be required to become a union member or, conversely, be required to abstain from union membership as a condition of obtaining or retaining employment. Little hard evidence exists on the effect of right-to-work laws. Meyers (1955) concludes that in Texas the law does not appear to have had a noticeable impact on union strength. Kuhlman (1955) finds that the Virginia law has caused little change in hiring practices, and he cites lack of enforcement as a major cause. Novit (1969), in …

An Empirical Test Of Regulatory Effects, H. Craig Petersen Jan 1975

An Empirical Test Of Regulatory Effects, H. Craig Petersen

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Averch and Johnson have provided analytical support for the assertion that rate of return regulation causes inefficient production because of the overuse of capital. Empirical evidence in support or refutation of their thesis is just beginning to appear. This paper provides additional evidence. The regulated firm's objective is stated in terms of cost minimization subject to a regulatory constraint. The effect of changes in the allowed rate of return on capital are evaluated. It is shown that as the allowed return approaches the cost of capital, costs increase and the percentage of total costs paid to capital also increases. These …

The Primitive Hunter Culture, Pleistocene Extinction, And The Rise Of Agriculture, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1975

The Primitive Hunter Culture, Pleistocene Extinction, And The Rise Of Agriculture, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

The hypothesis that megafauna extinction some 10,000 years ago was due to "overkill" by Paleolithic hunters is examined using an economic model of a replenishable resource. The large herding animals that became extinct, such as mammoth, bison, camel, and mastodon, presented low hunting cost and high kill value. The absence of appropriation provided incentives for the wastage killing evident in some kill sites, while the slow growth, long lives, and long maturation of large animals increased their vulnerability to extinction. Free-access hunting is compared with socially optimal hunting and used to interpret the development of conservationist ethics, and controls, in …
